Seafoamstory

I plan on sharing a few posts before the end of the year about how the Seafoam kit came to life. It's tricky to try and remember all this stuff and it's a bit nerve-wracking to share details of my good and bad decisions, but someday, surely, I'll find this interesting and the hope is that you enjoy hearing about the process now.

Twitterconvo

When Becky called back in February, she mentioned how important it was that I had a lot of time early on to think about the kit and play around with color and designs. I love that, especially now, when I look back, because some of my early ideas were crap and really needed those months to be flushed out.

But immediately after that phone call, before I had even sat down to brainstorm, I knew four things:

I wanted this kit to be simple. I'm a simple girl. My clothing style is simple. My home decor is simple. My documentation style is simple. Anything else, flourishes, creatures, distressing, cutesy, floral, themey or rainbows of color would be outside my "zone" and not wouldn't feel right.

I wanted to really use this kit. I already knew from two months of Project Life spreads that I wasn't a big "kit user." If I was going to do this, I was passionate about creating something that I would be able to incorporate into my own album each week. I think the kits are fantastic because they simplify this process. Especially now, 45 weeks into the year, I see great value in working from a kit; it keeps you going when the creative energy starts to run thin. At this point, the less paper I have to cut, corners I have to round and stuff I have to buy, the better. I can't wait to start fresh in 2013 and although I will definitely be working additional stuff in, I know I'll be more kit focused from the start this time.

I wanted this kit to be something that my girlfriends – who are totally awesome and take tons of photos, but have never considered scrapbooking before – would be interested in using. I hoped that the kit would be able to reach a different market of people who considered memory-keeping too cutesy or over-whelming. I wanted it to feel modern but not complicated. It had to be something that would work with anyone's photos and not pull focus from them.

Life

I was (and still am) obsessed with the phrase "THIS IS WHAT LIFE LOOKS LIKE." I used a similar phrase years ago when I sold my first summer minibook kit. The covers said "This is what Summer Looks Like" and the idea was that you'd fill book rings with photos and stuff from your summer. I couldn't get the idea out of my head back then and I couldn't get it out this past year as I worked on Seafoam. Project Life, before anything else, is a visual representation of every day life, and I can't think of a better phrase that states that.

So that, for better or worse, was the start. I had a goal. A bigger, but less complex goal than "design a kit" and that goal was to make something versatile and inspiring that you and I would want to use and Becky would love. No pressure. 🙂

…in the next installment, picking (and re-picking and crying a bit over) a color scheme!

UPDATE : The Seafoam core kit is now available on Amazon!

Ahhh, Elise! I am not a scrapbooker (at all), but I have loved seeing your project life album come to life this year and I can’t wait to hear more about how the seafoam kit came to be!

I do like the simplicity of your projects and am drawn to your blog for that. The last thing I need is something to overwhelm me. Life is so busy! Your addition to Project Life is awesome, and I hope to work with it in the coming year. Congrats again!

I wasn’t going to buy a kit for next year. I’m a simple Project Lifer like you and found myself only using the title cards and the journal grid cards. But I’ve absolutely loved what I’ve seen from Seafoam so I definitely will be ordering it!

I’m so excited I can hardly stand it! I absolutely love Project Life, but I never really fell in love with any of the kits (Clementine came close, but ehre are some patterns that I know I won’t use). I’m seriously considering buying 3 or 4 Seafoams and just…HOARDING. Yep, no shame.
    So excited for you!

and this is exactly why i love your style. i’m a no flowers/flourishes/cutesy/rainbows/inking/distressing person as well. i’m always drawn to your simple design, and when i feel myself straying from my own personal style, i refer back to you to remind myself that simple is what i do best, regardless of what the stream is doing. i do not have to reinvent the wheel, or myself every week.
and i am SO glad that your kit gears towards people like us. SOO glad. i’m actually going to BUY a kit this year because i can’t NOT buy it.
thanks for pouring your heart into it. can’t wait to get it in my hands 😉

I hope this comes off sincere … Did Becky say why she choose you to design a kit? I mean, you had been doing PL for less than 2 months … how did she know that you’d stick with it, or that as your creative style {w/PL} evolved that it would be something she wanted? It is AWESOME that she trusted you enough to take a risk this big — I mean, you hadn’t even gone a full year! lol. But you do have a crazy following now … I’d I’m planning on a Seafoam Kit in my future! 🙂

I’m really looking forward to this kit! So far I’ve only bought the grid cards, but Seafoam looks like something I would actually use without getting sick of it or having it overpowering my photos.

I noticed when Becky announced this year’s kit designers that she chose someone who is already doing PL (Elise) and someone who was not (Heather Bailey). I suspect she was looking for people with great design sense to design the kits, as opposed to people who would do PL themselves all year, and she definitely nailed it — especially (IMO) in choosing Elise. I’ve pre-ordered Seafoam albums, papers and a core kit (I’m in Canada, so we have that option already), and I am VERY excited to be working with them next year. I have both an almost-3-year-old daughter and a 42-year-old husband, and my adventures this coming year will take me from the forests of northern Canada to the plains, the tropics and the urban sprawl of southern Africa, so I needed a kit that could be adapted to all of those stories. For me, that’s Seafoam. 🙂

I am a recent follower of your blog and even more recent convert to PL. Thank you for sharing this story – I absolutely LOVE the look of Seafoam. And I love your style. It is so nice to find others with a simple, less is more philosophy. They seem to be few and far between especially in scrapbooking.

I am not a scrapbooker (I should get that tattooed somewhere because I repeat it a lot) but started Project Life.
And the kit is a HUGE help. However, I love doing my own… stuff. Using photoshop to create my cards etc. I still struggle with the printing process but that’s ok, I’ll get there.
I love what was shared about your kit, and love even more that you are sharing the «behind the scenes».

I’m so glad you designed Seafoam, it’s what I’ve been looking for!
I started PL this year and after 2 months I stopped using the cards (core kit) as they’re totally not me, I’m more simple and ‘modern’ with my style so the cutesy ‘Clementine’ just didn’t do it for me, I was about to just order a new folder and page protectors only for next year and you popped up with Seafoam, thank you Elise!!! It’s what I’ve been looking for 🙂
