Hands down, this is my favorite project so far. Quilts are awesome. There are so many steps, but if you break it down each one is easy enough. And the errors somehow make them more charming. I am totally hooked on smaller size quilts (this is my third quilt, but first that's smaller than a queen) and have already decided I'll be giving them as Christmas presents this year (get excited, Mom & Steph!). I also might be making us seven more between now and then. We'll see.

When I last shared, I had a quilt top ready to roll. The next step was to
sandwich it (navy backing, cotton batting in the middle and triangles on top) into an acutal quilt and begin my favorite part, machine stitching it all together.

Quiltsewing

I don't have any special tools (like a walking foot) for quilting on a machine and so my technique is just to manhandle it all through that tiny space. After machine stitching a much larger quilt, this one was a dream to do and I was excited to try something fancier and actually create a pattern on the backside.

Quiltstitched

I decided to stitch diagonal lines from one side to the other where the triangles met on their longest sides. Because I wanted it to be even, this meant two lines – one down each side of the seam.

Quiltsidebyside

I wasn't quite sure how it would turn out but I love the effect. The top
is neat and clean and the back (despite some wonky lines) looks complete.

Quilt4

I'm happy I went with a dark color for the backing and the green thread pops just enough.

Quiltbinding

The last step was hand-stitching the binding into place (so the seam is completely invisible). A striped binding is why I wanted to do this project in the first place, and I think it helps "modernize" all the floral patterns on the front.

Quilt6

Yes, this is for sure, one of my favorite projects.

Quilt5

I have been sharing peeks on Instagram and got a few requests for a full quilting tutorial. I am going to try and get one together for this exact quilt in the next few weeks. If you are anxious to get started though, I learned everything I know about quilting from Denyse Schmidt's Quilts.

Quiltend

Sweet. Keep an eye out for that how-to post.

This is project 13 of 27. I am

You can follow my progress here on the blog or on pinterest. Birthday challenges are my favorite. You can see the 26 Projects I completed while 26 here and the 27 materials I have used so far here.

Congratulations Elise, for finishing a big project and doing it so well. Just looking at your images makes me want to run home and start cutting up fabric so I can sew it together again… Quilting rocks!

You continually amaze and inspire me. (Unfortunately I mean inspire of the pinterest variety…I feel like I need to retire to get things accomplished.) Love these color combinations and I am definitely putting this triangle quilt down as my next one. Love it for the variety of materials.

Good for you, Elise! It looks like a perfect quilt to curl up with on the couch. I’m hoping to sew up a small quilt before our little guy arrives in December, but I doubt I will put it together as quickly as you did. 🙂

It looks great! It’s amazing how quickly you finished it from start to finish…I have been very slowly working on a quilt for my daughter and I just have to hand-stitch the binding on the back and I keep putting it off. Maybe seeing your finished quilt will give me the extra push I need to get it finished!

Wow! That’s amazing. I’m impressed that you made it so quickly. I started my first quilt three years ago and just finished it this summer. I was in school the whole time so I didn’t spend much time on it, but still you are quick and focused, I’m sure. It looks great!

LOVING IT! What I love the most is that, even though (as you mentioned) the colors aren’t “you”, the end result is 100% Elise. It’s beautiful.

You so made this look easy! My mom bought me a sewing machine when I turned 16, and now…9 years later, I think I am ready to actually REALLY start using it (not just for a random Halloween Costume either!). Like REALLY REALLY. Thanks (once again!) for the inspiration!

I’m in awe. I’ve made a couple of quilts and they’re not perfect, but some of them are just a hot mess. I have difficulty with measurements and cutting straight. I’d love a tutorial. Maybe it will get me to get some fabric out and try a smaller one again. It’s beautiful!

Love the quilt! Quilts are something where the whole is so much more than the sum of the parts. It’s just lovely when it all comes together.
If you are really going to be making a lot of quilts, pick up a walking foot for your machine. 🙂 They aren’t expensive (or at least they weren’t expensive five years ago, haven’t checked prices lately). 🙂

SO awesome! I love the colors you chose, and the striped binding really makes the quilt. Also, I think you just made the choice for me about how to back the quilt I’m making – dark solid color. It really lends to that modern look.

Amazing! Beautiful! You inspire me to learn to sew/quilt! Finally learned to crochet this week! I followed a YouTube tutorial and single crocheted a washcloth and now I learned the double crochet stitch and I’m making a scarf. Feels so cool to learn something new and to be able to make something useful! 🙂

Wow Elise, i LOVE this quilt. I wasn’t really into the colours when I saw your first posts but its come together beautifully & I’d be rapt to have like it. You’ve inspired me to try a triangle quilt (so far I’ve only completed two very basic quilts).

I picked up a “universal” walking foot for my machine (from JoAnns I think). The biggest thing you need to make sure of, is that the shank matches up with your machine, whether it’s slant or not. The walking foot will make it easier, but until then, I’d recommend setting your stitch to a really long stitch to make it even easier to “manhandle”! Great job and I quilt like you… marathon style 🙂 http://jennnash.typepad.com/blog/2011/02/quilt-marathon-complete.html

Wow, I’m impressed that you’ve managed to finish this so quickly! I’ve never made a quilt, but I think it would take me forever! I’ve been wanting to try for awhile, and I’ve decided that it will be my next big project after I finish knitting a throw rug for my lounge. Your quilt looks awesome too! I love that pattern you used when stitching it all together, and the striped binding is awesome! Love it!!:-)
