Quiltpile

When I last shared, I had a pile of triangles…

Quilt

On Thursday, I turned those triangles into squares.

Quilt3

A giant pile of squares.

Quilt2

That evening, I trimmed the threads and ironed the seam of each square flat.

Quilt6

And then on Friday, I laid out 9 rows of 11 squares (my table is small – so it was just six at a time…)

Quilt7

I took care to create a "random" pattern where no two sides of the same fabric were allowed to touch.

Quiltstrips

Next, I sewed the squares together to create rows.

Quiltb

And then laid out my rows again to re-establish my pattern. (And realized I had messed up thanks to the "only being able to see six rows at a time" issue.)

Quiltc

But, I decided to keep moving right along and pinned my rows together and sewed and sewed until…

Quiltd

…TA-DA, on Sunday, a quilt top was born!

Quilte

Next I'll be (machine) sewing the quilt top, batting and navy back together. I picked a lime green thread that is perfect for the job. I have to plan it out a bit, but my tentative plan is to sew diagonal lines over the whole thing…

I think you did good on the colors. I worked on a quilt this weekend, too. It’s for my aunt’s 70th birthday/Christmas. I’ve got another one to make after that and then I am going to make a large triangle one.

It’s looking great, Elise! I really like the colours you have chosen and your method of creating a random pattern. I think the lime green will look brilliant against the navy backing : )
I am just about to start the quilting process of my very first quilt. I greatly admire the fact that the first quilts you have tackled are queen sized – I am not that brave – I’m doing a baby one which is a big enough challenge for me to start with!

Good for you Elise! I just finished my first quilt recently. It’s a patchwork quilt that I had a love/ hate relationship making. I can’t wait to see your finished quilt!

Similarly to the people above … I’m inspired by your just get it done attitude. You’ve almost made three quilts in the time I’ve been thinking about making one. I’ve gotta move past my fear of screwing it up and just get at it. Thanks for sharing.

Looks beautiful! I’ve been looking for a quilting class lately because I really want to learn…and I think you should teach one! I would totally drive down for a weekend quilting class with Elise. 🙂
Or I could just look for a book on quilting, too.

Thanks for sharing! I have a few tops, and have even sandwiched a couple, but too scared to go the next step. Hopefully watching you I will be inspired to quilt the entire piece.

Looking forward to seeing the final product! It’s been a few years since I’ve made a quilt, thinking it’s time to make another since my last one is looking worn!

that would be fun!! But I do not know where I would teach it!! I have read and love Quilts by Denyse Schmidt and while I havent tried any of the projects, it really helped me understand the steps of quilting.
