FRAMINGPHOTOS

To wrap up this week, I wanted to talk a bit about framing (family) photos and hanging them on the walls. A few years ago, I was all about plastering the house with photos of the two of us. I've pulled up a little bit since then and have worked to incorporate a lot more "art" into our space.

Framed5

But I still love a good framed photo and decided to create a cluster of them on the wall in front of the garage entrance to our house.

We have been super blessed over the past few years to have really awesome photos taken by really great photographers (The Goodness & Driver Photo). I am so thankful for the photos we have from them and oodles of them have made it into our family albums (here, here & here).

Framed2

I have also chosen to frame a few, but tend to favor the "less traditional" of the shots. For example, the only wedding photo that we currently have on our walls is a small 5×7 of our shoes (and flowers).

Framed

We have a similar shoe shot from our engagement photos framed on the mantle.

Framed7

And a favorite from the photos we took in April.

Framed9

Other than that though, I end up framing a lot of imperfect or random photos. Some are low quality – the one above was taken with an underwater disposable camera and others were taken with my phone or even computer camera.

UphighFramed8

A photo that makes me laugh is likely to make the wall. I've talked about the one above many times before; it was taken in a photobooth set up at our friends' wedding. I didn't see it at the wedding and months later, for a split second, I thought I had taken a photo with Russel Brand. It had to go on the wall (and it had to be our 2011 Christmas card). I wanted something big and fun (and cheap) so I had it blown up at Office Depot for under $4. It's printed on copy paper but because it's just black and white, the quality looks decent. That frame & mat was purchased at Ikea.

Booth2

Photobooth strips are likely to make the wall. Something magic happens in photobooths and I am not quite sure what it is? Maybe it's the light that seems to blow out any skin imperfections? Or maybe it's just the small cramped space? Or maybe it's just the flurry of activity that comes with trying for four "great" shots? Either way – the results are usually good. I have two strips (both from the Ace Hotel about a year apart) and one collage of them (from a wedding we attended in fall 2010) on our walls.

Framed3

One of my favorite framed photos is from the first morning of our honeymoon. We were at breakfast and I set the timer on my small point and shoot. It captured us eating (so the photo rests on the counter in our kitchen) but it also captured our new wedding rings. We were in the most picturesque honeymoon site and somehow this random photo of breakfast is still one of my favorites from the trip.

Passing

I love framed photos that show the passing of time. I found the two on the left (from 2009 & 2007) while sorting through old photos. When I went to buy a frame to put them next to each other, I could only find frames with three 4×6 holes. So back at home, I found another photo from last spring and ta-da… three similar photos, five years apart.

Framed4

Most of our framed photos are super normal sizes – 4×4, 4×6, 5×7, 8×10 or 11×14 – so they are very easy to frame. When I know I want to create a cluster of different photos, I tend to stick with frames that are all the same color (usually black). It's unifying without being limiting. (Everywhere sells black frames.) I have read many online tutorials about hanging gallery walls. Most recommend creating templates of each frame out of newspaper and playing around with them on the wall. I totally dig that idea and would go for it if I was worried about spacing, but usually, I just start hammering and adjust as needed.

Booth

When I have something that is a non-traditional size, like a photobooth strip that I want to frame, I buy heavy white paper (at an art or craft store), cut it to the size of the frame and mount the photo on the front and center with double stick tape. A large white mat in a black frame makes even small photos stand out and sets them apart as something special.

Framed6

Recently, I have started to write (in pencil) the dates and locations on the white mats of the frames. This is partly for me, so I remember, but also for anyone who looks at our walls. It's funny – one of my favorite things to do at people's houses is look at their family photos. I think it's fascinating to see what people decide to frame.

OMG …love the idea of writing in pencil on a mat…very personal and artistic. Totally doing this. Today’s “walls” post was my fave…love family photos.

Love this series! Any ideas/suggestions for displays of heritage photos? I am lucky to have a bunch of family photos, but am flummoxed by how to best display a selection of them. They are of course all different sizes, some black and white, etc. (I’d scan the originals and display copies, so I could standardize them to 4×6, but I wonder if the charm of the variation trumps the randomness of the sizes?)

really like these posts. I am a collector of things to put on walls, so much so I have tons of stuff sitting in a closet waiting for the perfect spot. I think I have a problem with holding back on pics of my husband and I. There are tons of us around the house. I think there are 5 from our wedding alone. I have gotten to where I am picking out more interesting pics of us that are a little weirder. Like one from a camping trip that is really blurry but I like it and it makes me think of our trip and it makes me happy. Like your honeymoon morning pic, it conveys a feeling instead, and I like that. Must be maturity 🙂

I love how many photos you have framed around your home, and I enjoyed reading about how you chose and arranged them. I love that you chose the feet photos from your professional engagement and wedding shots and that you included lots of casual photos too. You make photobooth strips look good! The honeymoon photo in your kitchen is awesome too 🙂

Thank you for this post. You have given me much inspiration on how to frame out my photos. And I am the same as you in that I LOVE to look at other people’s family photos. I think they tell the love story of that family. I really love all of yours. So many of them tell an amazing story of the two of you. Such love there.

Thanks for such a great week of informative posts! I loved this series!
Do you have advice or “rules” for hanging things around framed posters, etc? I don’t want the poster to be the overwhelming “eye catching” thing.
Thanks for such a great week!

My mom has TONS of awesome black and white and sepia toned heritage photos framed. I think they really look awesome in a cluster, but I think I would keep them all in their original size but unify them with mats and similar frames I think. How fun!! 🙂

that is a good question… Maybe you can equal out the eye-catching-ness of the poster with something big (but less detailed) in a similar size? Balancing art is tricky, I know. Sometimes if something is super eye catching and strong I stick it on a smaller wall of its own. Then I group other pieces on a large wall that do not compete as much for attention…

    Hi Elise,
I have been following you for a while but never saw the wedding posts that you did. I looked at them today and just LOVE your wedding stuff! My favorite color is orange so it caught my eye right away. Then I realized that grey goes very well with orange – compliments it very well and the shades you had for both were spectacular!
If you don’t mind, I am going to snag some pictures for personal wedding planning ideas. I am not getting married any time soon (am not even in a relationship) but it doesn’t hurt to start collecting wedding ideas now!
    Thanks for the inspiration.

I’ve been enjoying your blog for some time now but having been lazy and reading it through google reader I haven’t commented. I love what you share and you inspire me in so many ways. One of them is to get back to blogging. I love, love, love all the framed photos and so much of what you post about in here. I have to say, I love how you share your love story too. Good stuff.

Hi Elise, these posts have been really terrific and the way that you have organized them into different sorts of art has made it so easy to get inspired. I struggle with what to frame, where to hang/put things so these posts have been very helpful and inspiring. My girlfriend and I are off to Ikea this week so will pick up a few extra frames. I too love that huge B&W print of you with Russell Brandt (aka your hubby)…he so looks like him…lots of fun happy times. This has been a great inspiring post. Regards Kathy A, Brisbane

I just want to say, after reading these posts, I’m inspired to get more art and photos on the walls here. I’ve planned out a few pieces to make, and have come up with a few photos to start framing, so now I’ll need to start buying some paints and frames! It’s going to be fun!
I love your photo wall, and the choice of photos you have framed. I love that they’re not all the cliche photos I seem to see, and that there are ones from different perspectives (the feet shots and the wedding ring at breakfast shot). It adds variety and makes it more unique. I also love all the framed photobooth photos, too!

These are beautiful ideas. My mama and I have been scouring the Korean markets all week looking for fun new prints/fabric to re-do our living space once my hubs gets orders for our next duty station. I’ve been flumuxed over pictures because I used to ADORE having our faces plastered everywhere, but recently, I am more about more art/prints from our recent travels. I loved all your ideas and cant wait to try a few new things in our home. The pencil on the mats is a wonderful personal touch too!
