LOVELETTERS

While I was looking at our walls to prepare for this feature, I realized the art in our space can be broken down into basically two categories (both which have a lot of black and white…). Simple, graphic art (which I'll share more on tomorrow) and "art as love letters." That might sound like a strange category, but really, both in our purchased art and our DIY stuff, there is a clear theme.

Loveletters
my own script art + a photo print from 20×200.

Loveletters2
a self-portrait I took for a final project my senior year of college + DIY art.

Loveletters3

The stuff that hangs in my office (the three photos above) could be considered "creative love letters." My space is filled with mantras (many of my own) and artwork that I love for the color, patterns and messages. And in OUR space, our bedroom, living room and hallways, we have a lot of more traditional love letters. Some are VERY obvious.

Letters1

Ahem. A wood cut out LOVE? That's probably as obvious as it gets.

But some stuff is a smidge more subtle. I've mentioned this before, but the ampersands are everywhere. I fell in love with ampersands around the time I was working on our wedding invitations. To me, they represent love & togetherness, plus, they just look rad. I made the big nail art piece first and then set about collecting them so we have one in every room.

There are three love "poems" hanging in our house.

Lovepoem1 Framed4
Love2

Two are by my friend & artist Kal Barteski, and one is by artist Austin Kleon for 20×200. All three refer to couples a little bit and love a little bit (and a lot).

When I am trying to figure out text for DIY pieces, I often go with song lyrics. Two of these hang over our couches.

Love4

One is just simple painted script (I took Kal Barteski's online script school) on computer paper that I framed in a West Elm frame.

Love

And the second is a canvas printed by CanvasPop that has a photo from Palm Springs with text on top. If we had a family crest, we'd probably put, "Let's settle down where palm trees grow." on it. It's been our goal since we first started dating (and already knew if we stayed together we'd face many, many moves).

And then there is the giant canvas that is the biggest love letter I have ever written. This was an actual love letter on canvas to Paul using the lyrics of our favorite song and the song we danced to at our wedding. (He was deployed when I made it, but I sent him a photo.)

Card1

In addition to the love themed art, I chose to frame a few actual love letters.

Cards

These are some of our favorite cards that I sent to Paul while he was deployed. They are just mounted (with double stick tape) on white poster board (which is my favorite inexpensive method to frame anything). Right now, this large frame is leaning on Paul's desk upstairs. It would be fun to do one of these card collages from each deployment. You can read more about this project, including my favorite places to buy cards here.

ooh we have that Austin Kleon cartwheels print too. love it. I like how varied in size your wall hangings are. I have lots and lots of 8x10ish things; i think I should shake it up a little with some bigger pieces (and small ones in oversized frames…). seems like lots of your big ones are diy too, which certainly cuts down on the cost. thanks for the inspiration!

    Hey Elise,
This is my first time commenting, so I just want to say that I love your blog- so inspiring and motivating. Ever since I’ve found it it’s been the first one I check each day (thanks for posting regularly).
Anyway, I love this idea of love letters. We just recently moved into a new place and I’ve been struggling to fill our walls and home with art that I love, but I had totally been missing the idea of our art as love letters to each other and life. Seems so obvious, but I guess I was getting caught up in peripheral things, like whether I liked the technique, color, appearance, etc. All important, but somewhat selfish and empty if I don’t use art as love letters. So definitely a helpful reminder.
Great timing too, since I’ve recently started painting and making things again in order to get the ball rolling (also due in part to you and Kal Barteski with both of your kick a** attitudes about “just doing it”).
So thanks again for doing what you do.

Awesome, inspirational, sooo creative! Some lead the way, others follow. I FOLLOW (in terms of art/decor). What does the wine glass print say? I can’t read it… 2nd of the 3 “love poems”.
Edith Schaeffer (wife of Francis Schaeffer)wrote on homemaking (and lots of other things). She has a quote I am reminded of as I see your style –
“People throw away what they could have by insisting on perfection, which they cannot have, and looking for it where they will never find it.”
I love that you don’t embrace perfection… but when you put all these “imperfect” pieces together, you’ve created something very special. Way to go, Elise. Continue leading the way! 🙂

Great question. My biggest thing when mixing is just to play with size. I like to have a variety. I also, never want to put the same artist or similar look in the same cluster. To me, that starts to look a little boring. I love the idea of playing with texture too. On my mantle, for example, I like the mix of stained wood, with a big black frame, with the copper piece and the big white mat. I think having lots of different textures helps break everything up. I am going to talk a little more about this Friday too. 🙂

    thank you!
    That wine painting says :
    It’s every part of you
    I love
    It’s every part
    every drip
    each day
    of who you are
    and how you see me.

LOVE this post Elise. We have been in our home a year now and I’m really struggling with how to make our house a home. I love the idea of adding love letters ( to our creativity and to each other) as art. thanks for the inspiration and all your great projects. I really want to take script school too.

I never thought of art as a form of love letters, but I can certainly see how it is! Art is so personal anyway, so it makes sense that it can reflect love notes between 2 people. I hope to have lots of these items in the house when me and my partner buy a place! Makes it way more personal and special!
Thanks for your added notes to Michelle’s question, I was going to ask the same thing about the groupings 🙂 I’m hoping to go shopping for a heap of new frames, so at least I can look for different sizes that I like together!

This is such a great post. I’ve set a goal to do 30 craft projects while I’m 30 and I definitely think some song lyric/favorite quote art is in order.

I am smitten with this idea of love letters as art – great articulation – & I realize it’s what I’ve been drawn to as I’m looking for art in our soon-to-be new home. I was eying that cartwheel piece on Monday actually.
I LOVE your palm springs canvas & text; I want to do something similar with a desert-scape for me & my husband. I’m not sure how large to go – I know a lot will depend on the space/wall, but how large did you have yours printed?

It is seldom that we get to witness art that is inspired by two colors only, black and white. For me, this kind of art must be given more emphasis.
