My very first home-grown tomato. Planted, watered, fussed over, waited on, cheered for, plucked, cut, sprinkled with salt & pepper, enjoyed today for lunch.
By far, the greatest tomato I have ever eaten. HOORAY!

Congratulations!! I have my own two tomato plants (aka “the babies”) that I have been equally fussing over. No sign of tomatoes yet, but I keep hoping… (and watering, willing, etc. etc.)!

hi elise! i have loved reading your blog – especially regarding your gardening. i thought i’d share a tip that i’ve learned, as i’m growing tomatoes, too, for the first time this year. after having a few split in the sun or be punctured by a pest, my mother-in-law recommended that we pick them when they are starting to orange and allow them to ripen indoors. 🙂 yours is beautiful and it sounds like it did fine outside the entire time but, FYI in case it becomes useful info.

🙂 I picked this one when it was red last week and then let it soften inside for five days. Will be doing the same with the rest because I do not want animals enjoying my hard work. Thanks for the tip!!

Hooray indeed! Have loved following along on all your plant updates. I decided in 2011 (after visiting Savannah, GA) to create a green oasis in my home. I’ve loved the outcome. Been some misses w/not selecting the right plants for my light, but green plants + air plants bring such joy – spoken from a fellow “crazy plant lady.” This year I rented a plot in a community garden in my neighborhood and am amazed by my basil and that I actually have spaghetti squash growing and tomatoes turning red. Looks like I’ll have brussels sprouts by fall, too! So awesome! Will be using your pesto recipe this weekend.

Nothing tastes as as good as that first tomato. It’s amazing just how happy that little tomato can make you feel. From seedling to table…..way to go girl….it is such a buzz to grow your own food even in small containers…..so exciting. Regards Kathy A, Brisbane, Australia

hey Dunia… I just sort of started winging it. I got lots of tips from kind readers for separating the tomato plants and caging them. I am hoping to do a big round-up of tips at the end of the season for people who start next spring. 🙂
