enJOY it

an archived personal and craft blog from Elise Blaha Cripe.

We're halfway through the year. Already.

Instead of setting new year's resolutions this year, I decided to re-evaluate at the beginning of each month what was most important and pick a few small things to focus on. At the end of the month, the list refreshes completely and I start working towards new "goals" – (Yes, I use the word loosely). My word for 2012 is "choose" so each month, picking these small tasks helps me to remember I am choosing what I do and how I spend my time each day.

I have found this method of goal-setting to be pretty inspiring. It works well with my personality, as I totally believe if something sits on my to-do list for too long, I should toss it out the window. As you'll see below, I have not accomplished everything on my lists each month. Although I would LOVE to cross everything off, the focus of these goals is more to bring intention into each month and give me a chance to reset every few weeks.

When I look at the past six months (with things I actually accomplished underlined), it's clear that these lists have held the fun & creative stuff. They are not chores. They are not of the "keep the house from looking like a bomb just went off" or "spend less money" variety (which are also things that I am always trying to do). I like to think of these lists as the positives – things I am choosing to add to my life.

I also notice that each monthly list actually reminds me more of that was happening the month prior than the month I was actually working on the tasks. Obviously, in late February, Paul had just returned home, so my goals list for March was more tongue in cheek – I wanted to enjoy our time together. And then the month of April was stressful and difficult for the two of us. The simplest thing I could think to put on May's list so the month could be better was to "be kind" to Paul. That might seem like a strange thing for a goals lists – I should be doing it anyway, all the time, right? But for me, it was about making it a true intention and thinking more carefully about what I said to him and how I spent our time together. In May, something major shifted in my attitude. Our relationship improved & I noticed a difference in how I felt, both physically and mentally. Making a conscious effort to "be kind" helped me to change my attitude on a lot of other things and I think was responsible for a lot of the good that developed in May and has carried on to June.

Before wrapping up here, I want to address the no email checking goal I set for June because I spent so much time talking about it at the beginning of the month. I'd say I succeeded about 35% of the time. But really it felt like 100% because while I thought the point was to set and stick to a hard and fast rule, it turns out the point was actually to free myself from email stress. And that happened. Saying I "couldn't" check after 6pm meant I had an out. I didn't have to check. I did a good job being present and not pulling up email on my iPad or phone in the evenings. But if I had an extra 20 minutes to myself at my computer at 8:30pm and wanted to open my inbox and tie up loose ends before morning – I could. And I did. Goals, and this one in particular, should help to relive stress – not create it.

I really could go on and on about goal-setting, reflection and making small life changes that add up to big ones. I have thinking about all of this so much because I am currently developing a workshop for Big Picture on the topic of goals. (yay!!) It's something that I had never thought of but when it was suggested at our brainstorming session something immediately clicked. A-ha! This is exactly what I want to teach. More details on the class to follow.

I am very inspired by your mid-year round up of this process. I also chose to not make new year’s resolutions in the traditional way (do more exercise, eat healthily, save money etc). Instead I wrote a list of 12 Travel Goals for 2012 because travel is my passion and I want to ensure that my passion is maximised… I may now revisit this list and write a post about six months progress.
Thank you Elise for always aiming to inspire and engage your readers in believing in a fuller, more productive life.

I’m super excited to hear about your new class! I am so there 🙂
While I’ve grown to love your blog, it was your Goal Setting section that initially caught my attention back in December or January. I just love that you go for your goals, and even if you don’t get them all done, you still learn things from the process.
I’m also working on my own list of goals for the year, 52 things in 52 weeks. I know I’m not going to finish them all, but I’m having a blast working through them.
    Thanks for your inspiration.

This post inspired me a lot! I created few Goals Lists at the beginning of the year but later I haven’t got enough time for it… So I gave up. But now I know how important those “little goals” are!
    Thank you! 😡

Hi Elise! I am Daniela and since I found your blog I come here every day! I like your ideas, your projects, the way you write, and above all I like your positive energy! You are inspiring!
This is the first time I make a comment here, and do it in this post because at the beginning of June I make a monthly goal (inspired in yours) to have a fuller & productive month!
So I chose a picture, I wrote my goals on it and that image became my computer walpapper… and it totally worked, I completed all my goals and I’m happy for it!
Thank you Elise for being so inspiring to me 🙂

Thank you for your post! I just had an “aha” about being more intentional and thinking about what I want to add to my life (rather than all of the “have to’s” that seem to creep into my goals). Thank you!

I absolutely love this post! I love all the months together. Since I grew up as an athlete, I was always setting small goals for the day, month and week and my husband thinks I am crazy. But you do an awesome job of explaining the benefits of these monthly goals. Awesome job Elise, you are so inspiring as always!

I really honestly enjoy reading your blog. I love the idea of setting monthly goals and using that term more loosely. Setting goals is something that I love doing and reading you talk about how they should be positive items to set for your life has really made me think about the goals I will be setting for myself next month on my blog! All in all, a great post!

I love this. I think it’s really great how you break up your goals month to month and not stress about them, just use them to help you throughout the month. I am a serious list maker and I get really stressed out if I don’t accomplish everything, but I think I’m going to sit back and try to relax and enjoy each day more than worry about what I haven’t accomplished. Thank you. 🙂

It’s interesting to hear your thoughts on your goals so far this year… including the ones you haven’t achieved.
I love setting goals — daily, seasonal, annual, and lifelong. I’ve been thinking about goals a lot recently, and I realized that I’m getting better at choosing (and changing!) my goals. Perhaps I’ll write up some of my own thoughts soon. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi there! I’m fairly new to your blog, but don’t worry, I’m already seriously obsessed! I absolutely love the idea of monthly goals. I often feel like I’m setting myself up to be disappointed when I try to tackle a whole year all at once when New Year’s rolls around. I’m not even going to wait for the new year to try this out. You’ve inspired me to start monthly “choosing” with the month of July. Thanks! (Great “goals” btw! A lot of them should go on my list too.)

I need to get back into doing this. I think where I was going wrong was putting chore-type things on my goal list, like making sure I worked out regularly. Plus, I am terrible at beating myself up if I don’t achieve what I set out to achieve and this was just another way to do that! I think if I took a better attitude to it, more like yours, then I would get more out of it. Maybe if I only put fun things on it to start! Great post, I’ve really been enjoying your goal lists! 🙂 xoxo

I’m a lurker on your blog, but I had to comment on this post because I’m going to bookmark it and re-read it all the time. I’ve been feeling burnt-out and lost and directionless lately and I’ve gotten into a terrible cycle of not doing things I want to do because I’m so anxious about the things I think I SHOULD be doing (but then I don’t do those things either). Anyway, I’m going to try to incorporate smaller short-term goals into my daily life and to think about CHOOSING what I want to do. Thanks!

Love hearing your thoughts on goals and I’m super excited about your new workshop. You Blog 2.0 workshop was so fabulous, this one will be right up my alley, goals make my heart go pitter patter 😉
I started writing out monthly goals b/c of one of my fave bloggers Sara (feedingthesoil.com) and then when I started a blog I also put them there. It helps me so much – to stay focused on what I feel is important and to not get overwhelmed with EVERYthing that I want to do. Inspired by you I’ve been letting myself be OK if I didn’t complete a goal and not making it roll over to the next month. Agreed – if it didn’t get done in a month maybe it’s not a priority right now.

Awesome post! I’ve always rejected the idea of setting New Year’s resolutions, it always seemed pointless. Why not set goals all year? Why not make changes when you see change is needed, no matter what time of year it is? I like your monthly goal setting idea, to look at the prior month and see what worked and what didn’t work and then to look forward with a plan. Good stuff! 🙂

I have been so inspired by your monthly goals and have just started doing my own (just start, right, even if it’s already June!) I totally relate to the idea of wanting to add things to your life. Right now, I am working full time outside the home, so my goals are geared toward what I want that small but precious time I have at home and with my husband to look like. It has really been a revelation to think about it this way, so thank you very much! So far, I have definitely not gotten to all of my monthly goals, but I know I am doing more stuff than I would have if I hadn’t made these goals at all, and I am really happy about that. Thank you, really, one million times over, for all you have shared!

It’s so cool seeing all of your monthly goals together in one post! This is way more inspiring than setting yearly goals. When you make a yearly resolution, you have no way of knowing how you’re going to feel about the thing in a few months time, let alone a year later! I think I’d get way more done if I was reassessing the goals on a monthly basis. I reckon this would relieve a lot of the guilt for not getting things done or for priorities changing, and also help productivity since you’re listing stuff you WANT to include in your life, rather than chores!

This is a great way to set up your goals. I have yearly goals but if I were to break them down into accomplishing a few each month it would probably increase my productivity incredibly. A brilliant and simple solution. Good luck with the remainder of your goals. You’re doing fabulously.

    dear elise,
this goal-setting project, on the whole, is so smart and generous. you approach it with savviness, knowing that efficiency and perfection are neither enjoyable nor successful in and of themselves. rather, they require kindness, fun, error, and other such qualities to balance them and make an experience worthwhile. thank you, thank you, for offering guidelines that are inspiring but realistic. this is wonderful, and i’m sitting down with my monthly calendar to (a week or so in, but who’s counting?) write down my first set of goals.
    cheers,

What a beautiful idea. I’m having a baby in December and the idea of being a mom and working full time is definitely on my mind. I love your idea of setting goals that foster enjoyment. That is certainly something I’d like to start now and continue when the baby arrives.
On a side note, I am so excited to have come across your blog. My husband is a Marine. He is out now and working for the DOD. We went through two deployments to Afghanistan. Right now my father-in-law is doing a one year deployment. People often forget how important wives and family are – so thank you both for your service and dedication.
My job is very analytical so I try to do creative things to interest the rest of my brain and soul. Your focus on a goals and lists of projects is a fantastic way to stay focused. It’s not just about making something. It’s about learning along the way. I can’t wait to read more 🙂
