So, this was a lot of fun. Remember how I was going to work on it while on vacation? That didn't happen. Not even a little bit. But over the past week, I pieced it all together and am very happy with the result.

My goal was to add something interesting to every page and not phone it in. I usually skimp a bit on details, but this book is a pretty good mix. Some details, but still very true to my style. I used every page that comes with the summer books (except for the white card) and only added one extra piece of patterned paper (on the backside of the front cover).

Pssupplies

Before I started, I pulled from my supplies the embellishments that I would be using. They were chosen based on color mostly. It helps me to get everything that could work out and in view or else it's never making it in. Every piece didn't make it in, but a lot of it. I also used my sewing machine & light teal thread to add lots of stitching.

Pspaper

I also spread out all the paper I had collected on the trip so I knew what I had to work with. I ended up using everything shown above except that photo booth strip. I decided to scan it in and manipulate it in PSE (as you'll see below) and I'll be framing the original to hang in my house.

I printed all my photos for the album as I went, depending on what size (eithger 4×6 or 2×3) that I "needed."

When I was sharing peeks on Instagram last week, I got a few requests to do a video walk-through of this album. It's been ages since I shared a video, so I decided to go for it. It's long (almost ten minutes) but it gets the book into "3D" and shares a bit more about my process and how I repeat the same stuff over and over to bring cohesion to my minibooks. I apologize in advance for the bedhead (this was supposed to be my trial run, but it worked out well enough so I went with it) and the garbage man that goes by (twice). I hope you find it helpful though!

I talk more about how I brought the book together in the video, but here are some main points.

  • I create cohesion by using the same size photos – 4×6 that take up the photo page and 2×3, offset to the side of a patterned page.
  • I use similar colored embellishments to keep things cohesive as well.
  • I stitch around the edges of some pages to add extra detail.
  • I wrap labels over the edge of the page because I feel like it "grounds" them better and gives them a place.
  • I love stuff sticking out the edges of the book. (This is why I sell them with the scalloped card and manilla tab card!)
  • I used the envelope to hold our hotel bill. Someday in the future I'm sure I'll love to know what we spent on this trip.

I love the look of your book! I started something similar but much more simple for my anniversary trip with my partner last year. I’ve stuck with kraft pages, but lots of journalling, photo collages and add in pages. I’m planning on finishing it up to give to my partner for our anniversary next month. It makes such a fun snapshot of a trip! I think I might do something more similar to yours for our anniversary trip this year, although we haven’t yet decided what we’re going to do for it.

Elise what did you do with that long brochure?
My issue with making mini books for vacations is that I always have memorabilia that is bigger than the book. I hate to cut it.

So pretty! I love your mini-books. They always come out looking so cool. I ordered mine but for some reason mail lately is taking FOREVER.
Just a little p.s. to say thank you, thank you, thank you for being willing to wait in line at the post office and fill out a customs form to ship to APO addresses. You’d be surprised how many people won’t ship to us even though it costs the same as mailing something to New York. I’m so grateful and can’t wait to get started on mine.

I ordered one of your summer books the other day, but being so anxious to get mini-booking I made my own to tide me over. Not thrilled with it…I used Project Life cardstock purchased during Becky’s sale awhile back…way to pattern-y, but hoping to cover most of it up with photos and stuff. We’ll see.
Love your book. It’s perfection cover to cover.

Hi Elise, great mini-book! I’d love a post about how you organize all your embellishments — are they in folders, boxes, etc. Are they organized by theme or color or manufacturer?
That’s my biggest problem right now. I, too, feel like I need to see my stuff or I won’t use it — but my current solution of crap everywhere isn’t working either! 🙂

This video is hilarious. Thanks for showing your process, but more importantly, thanks for making me laugh out loud at my desk while I’m the only one in my office. Very cute and real – I appreciate it both of those things. I never would have thought of doing a minibook before I started reading your blog. I think it’ll be the perfect way to document my long-distance relationship this summer and fall. Thanks for all you do!

In the end, I think what really makes your books so great are your fantastic photographs. You have a lovely eye for seeing things from unique perspectives. Your choice of paper and embellishments are tops but it’s the photos that really do it. Seeing them helps me to improve my “eye”

This book rocks and I’m chuckling that you didn’t do any of it on vacation as you thought you might!:) Good for you that you did what you wanted….that’s what vacation is about, right? I am so doing this mini book for my next vacation! In fact I have all these snippets of memorabilia from past vacations that I would like to put together in a mini like this. I’ll start from the most recent and work my way back given the time I have. Oh…I’m sitting here drinking my Chemex brewed coffee and loving it! Thanks for the recommendation!

I would also be interested in hearing how you store things– emebellishments, paper, and “the like.” You’re not the “traditional” scrapbooker that only does 12×12, so I think that you have a unique view on the same products 🙂

Thanks for sharing the video, it was fun to see your creative process! And it’s simple, but it was good for me to see how you gathered all the photos, memorabilia and embellishments that you wanted to use. I have so many embellishments tucked away that never see the light of day–so they never make it into a project!

I’m pretty much obsessed with this minibook- just perfect! You are so talented at making simple look great. I love that you can display this next to your minibook from Palm Springs last summer- I love that one too. 🙂 I can’t wait to hear about your tips for storage- I have the same problem of not using my supplies, but not knowing how to store them so they’re organized but I can more easily see them.

I love the little snippet remarks on why you did certain things in your mini…especially about having labels run off the page. Anyways, just had to share! You totally inspired me & made my day!! love your book and video! you said you would answer all the questions…i have some but they are about Palm Springs, i have never been to CA and was planning a trip Palm Springs next March. i fell in love with this little Inn but they are all ready booked! i really wanted to stay at the Ace Hotel but since i am going alone, i thought it would be harder to meet people at a big hotel, and was afraid i might be bored there. are people friendly or does everyone stick to who they came with? i’m not looking for dating (i’m married) but maybe someone to go out with (bar, restaurant, sight seeing). i hope it’s not too off the subject, i am already wanting to do a book of my trip like yours!!! thanks so much!

hey! You know, I am not sure what to tell you. When Paul and I go, we usually stick to ourselves/are not trying to meet people, so I am cannot say how friendly or unfriendly it is. We were there on Memorial Day weekend and the place was PACKED with a young, partying crowd. Seemed like a lot of college or just out of college folks. It would probably depend on the weekend too. Wish I could be more help! If you do not end up staying at the Ace, at least drop by to take photos and use their photo booth. 🙂 elise
