Junegoals

The big one for me this month is the email one.

No email checking after 6pm. It's a hard and fast rule I am committing to in June. Hopefully for the rest of time, forever and ever, Amen.

It's interesting, this job of mine. My work and my life are so connected. I blog about my life. I blog about my food. My travels. My family. My business. My photos. My thoughts. My loves. My struggles. Even my craft projects get hung in my house or document our life. I can never shut off the blog. It's there, humming always, in the back of my mind.

And that's the gig. Exactly what I signed up for and totally what I would shout at the Sorting Hat should he decide to take my opinion into account. Writing this blog, it seems, is my passion. (Also towards the top of the list is goal setting and making grid photo collages.)

So I can't turn off that part of my mind. I can't shut it down and go home for the day.

But I can turn off the email.

I will turn off the email.

If you've emailed me in the past, it's quite likely you got a pretty quick response. Usually within the day. Sometimes within the hour. Sometimes, within five minutes. (No joke, I've been known to hold an email response so I don't look like a crazy-inbox watcher.) My secret for email is that I practice the "one-touch rule." I read it, I respond to it, I archive it. The end. (Unless I'm checking on my phone, then sometimes it waits until I have a full keyboard at my fingertips. Or unless I am totally baffled and can't think of a response until I chat with someone, usually Paul. This happens – I get some crazy emails.)

If you've emailed me in the past, you've also probably noticed I am not at all flowery with my responses. (Though this blog post about email is pushing 625 words.) Your time is precious. My time is precious. Therefore my emails back are usually straight and to the point (but at least they are returned quickly).

Don't get me wrong. I love email. I love the connections. A positive comment or a sweet note in my inbox can make my day. I am so grateful for this job I have and these relationships I have formed online. Choosing (and remember, setting goals is about making choices) to turn off email at 6pm is not about disconnecting from the Internet, it's about connecting to real life. Connecting to Paul. Connecting to making dinner. Connecting to staring at my tomato plants & willing them to produce. Connecting to the book I am reading. Connecting to that glass of red wine.

Starting today, I am going to shoot for normal business hours. (At least in my inbox, we'll see if this spreads to other parts of my worklife.*) All of those emails that come after 6pm will still be read and responded to in a timely fashion (and my FAQ page is pretty legit for those that can't wait), but the pressure to keep up will hopefully be eliminated. The days of "I'll just take a quick peek at my email while Paul looks up how we know that one actor on IMDB" are over.

I see this as a legit challenge as I have a serious email addiction, but hopefully, it's the start of something awesome.

Welcome, June.

*Ironically, I wrote this post at 11:30pm a week before I set the rest of these goals. The first rule of blogging is don't talk about your blog in real life when inspiration strikes you get out of bed and you write.

    1) you respond to your blog 2) you respond to your email 3) that is far and above what a vast majority of bloggers I follow do. Do NOT EVEN stress over a “delay” in responding. Your readers know that they will get fresh content, interesting content, and a response. That’s all I want and I’m guessing that is pretty much what all of them want. (Oh yea. . .I forgot the inspiration part) Love ya. . .happy June.

What JillT said. And, I HEAR YA. I am the same, so the same. When Adam and I are watching a movie, and he gets up to take a pee and have a smoke, I check my email.
It doesn’t FEEL like an addiction because rarely does it feel like it interferes with my life. I check it at work, yes, but I’m productive enough that it doesn’t matter. (Or… does it?)
I think this subject is really important to us “creative professionals”. Keep it coming, Elise!

That is SUCH a good idea! I had to laugh at you holding a response to not seem crazy because I have totally done that too. I’m jealous of your ability to go through emails quickly… I have a bad habit of marking them as unread for later and keeping a bunch of drafts in my draft folder!

I totally have held responses too, glad to see it’s a slightly common epidemic. I absolutely hear you on the checking e-mail thing. I charge my BlackBerry on my nightstand when I go to bed, and too often, if I wake up in the middle of the night and see that little red light blinking, I will check e-mail. Over the past few weeks, I have taken to turning off my bb when I go to bed, to circumvent that problem. As technology gets more and more advanced, it becomes harder and harder to look away, but because I have two young kids, I am more than ever invested on connecting at all times to them. E-mail, twitter, and the like can wait. At least a little bit. *I have also taken facebook off my bb, to reduce another sometimes time-waster addiction.

That’s so funny because I’m the exact same way. It doesn’t help that I’m always on my iPad or Mac book because I know when an email comes in.
Sometimes I have students (I teach 2 college courses) who email me at the most ridiculous hours asking about things and I answer so quickly. On the one hand it makes me a good teacher. On the other I feel like I shouldn’t have to answer questions 2 hours before an assignment is due.
Good for you Elise! I need to start implementing this as well.

Good for you Elise!! I have done something similar – a “no internet after 9pm” rule for the past few months. I’ve noticed that I sleep better & have an easier time focusing on spending quality time with my husband. I’m now considering moving this up from 9pm to anytime after dinner 🙂

Right on! I think that is fantastic! I have set hours too, but only because I have children. I have to work when they aren’t around or are sleeping. And then when they get sick, I call off work…HA!
Creating a schedule is great idea. I have a feeling you will be able to stick to it. Good Luck!
And BTW…your pizza posts have inspired us to make different burgers once a week, or at least try to. And we are adding pizza once a week to our menu and I will definitely be looking to your blog for recipes! Thanks bunches!

Setting boundaries is a good thing. I have been working on not touching my cell-phone (to check anything) between 3pm and the time I get my twins in bed. That way they come home from school and I am ‘present’ until they go to bed. It’s a process – not easy to ignore your phone but I’m working on it.
So many of your goals this month are things that I should do myself. Thinking I might just follow along with them if you don’t mind.

Congrats on setting guidelines / boundaries for yourself. It can only make your work better! (not that it’s not awesome already).
This is sort of random, but I had a super frustrating experience at the DMV in Virginia today. Includiing me thinking “I have no idea what makes your state so special – please get me back home ASAP”. And then I remembered / re-read your old post about the MD DMV and it made me feel like I’m not crazy. So thanks 🙂

I have this same problem. Memorial Day was a killer for me because I had promised myself that I would only work for a little bit in the morning and the evening instead of little segments all throughout the day.

I love this! My boyfriend has built a life/career around his blog too and email has caused some serious issues in the past (I’m the crazy girl that gets jealous of a computer). He hasn’t set quite as much as a strict of a rule as you have, but we do now have dedicated stay at home date nights where email and skype are off, and I love it!

It’s middle of the year, and it’s ideal time to take stock and do a thorough review and regain some new strength and motivation to move on with our goals. Thanks for the reminder!

I’m at SAHM with a small business and this is hard! I feel like I constantly need to be checking email or facebook and it is a constant struggle to remember that those things will always be there, but he will only be this age TODAY. I bought this for my office and it’s a nice reminder.

As a lover of lists, goals, and projects, I always enjoy reading your monthly lists of goals! I like the variety of things that you choose for each month.
Also, when it comes to email boundaries, thank you for not even hinting that any of us ought to make the exact same decision as you! Our lives and scenarios are all so different that there isn’t one approach that will work for everyone. I found it so refreshing that you didn’t suggest we all follow in your footsteps. 🙂

Oh my god, I’m just the kind of person that turns on the computer JUST to look up someone at IMDB. It’s so corny and uncalled for. I’m thinking about writing down things I need (ehum, want) to check up and then take the entire list in one sitting instead of spending all my days googling on things.

I agree with Jill. I am sort of loving the idea of not responding to e-mail after 6 p.m. I think I need to put that policy in place for myself (and maybe copy for Facebook/Twitter).

I totally understand the short responses thing. Especially after working a corporate job – everybody does it. To the point where my boyfriend at the time and I would end up sending emails back and forth that just said “see attached”. We live in a strange world. But you’re right, time is precious.
