enJOY it

40LOAVESGRID

I have to say, it's a joy to be done with this project.

It served it's purpose and then some. I made 40 different loaves of bread. I tried detailed and complicated recipes and super simple recipes. I tried different flavors and loaded up on carbs. But most importantly, I got very comfortable making bread. And that, it turns out, was the whole point.

Less than two years ago, baking bread seemed like a foreign and scary concept to me. (Much like growing plants did two months ago when I tried not to cry in the Lowe's garden center.) Of course, the best way to get past something that intimidates you is to immerse yourself in it.

You've got to bake the bread.

I read a few books. I read a lot of recipes. I invested in decent tools. I took photos. I took notes on what worked and what didn't and what I'd change.

But really, I just but the effort in and baked the bread.

In the next few weeks, I absolutely want to get a post together with bread baking tips. But today I just want to celebrate that the 40 loaves were all baked (though it took an extra five months longer than I originally intended!) and share some of my favorites from the bunch.

After all this, I realized that my most favorite bread is usually pretty plain. It's the type that comes out in a basket at nice resturants still warm and tastes excellent with just a bit of salted butter. The first two loaves below are exactly that and the others serve a wide-range of needs. All of these will be baked again, most before the summer is out.

And all the other loaves plus my thoughts & recipe adjustments can be seen here. Thanks for following along on this adventure!

I’m not into baking at all, but reading about that journey of being intimidated by something and getting immersed in it nonetheless is something I really needed right now. So thanks, Elise, a lot. 🙂

I’ve really enjoyed your “40 Loaves” posts, but I have to ask, did you eat all of the loaves you baked or was it more like nibble then pass it along to your husband? I’m asking because you’re so fit! If I did something like this, I know I’d pack on the pounds!

Congrats!! What an awesome, carb-filled journey. I made the x-bread after reading about it here and it’s got to be my favorite bread to make. So easy and when it’s done you feel like an expert, so pretty and delicious! I mixed roasted garlic and rosemary into mine. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve pinned this post so I can come back and check out your most memorable recipes. The closest to bread baking i’d done would be cinnamon rolls. It is intimidating enough for me. But I love the idea of turning our challenges into a project like this. I’ve got quite a few I’d need to do myself 🙂

I’m where you were before you started 40 loaves: I’ve only tried bread a few times (with varying degrees of success) and am very intimidated. Maybe this will be the push I need to get me started on my own bread goal! I’ve loved reading about each new recipe, and they seem very doable.

the cinnamon pull apart bread looked very intriguing when you blogged about it last year. Finding it among your favorite convinced me that it’s time to give it a try 🙂
I’m gonna miss your bread feature – do you plan on adding a new food feature anytime soon?

haha! thank you! no, I really ate them. Paul helped (or my family when he was deployed and I was visiting them) but a decent chunk was me. Everything in moderation + running has become my fitness model. 🙂

Congrats on baking your 40 loaves! I’m so glad that you didn’t get discouraged when you didn’t reach the original goal–it’s really inspiring to see someone follow through even when things didn’t go initially as planned.
My husband’s grandmother is a professional baker (she was the bread lady at our local farmer’s market for years and years!) and there is absolutely nothing better than her fresh bread. We totally need to get some of that going on around here! I’m excited to try some of the recipes you’ve posted.

These were awesome posts! I’ve though about making bread myself, but since we don’t really eat it much, I’ve been a bit hesitant to start. Any recommendations on what sort of supplies I need for it? Things like particular trays or anything? I love making soup in winter (which is coming up here in Aus) and nothing beats fresh bread with it!

Congrats. I love bread but it overwhelms me when I think about baking it. I agree that there is nothing quite like a warm piece just out of the oven with just some butter. You’ve inspired me to give baking a loaf a try.

You did it! 🙂 wow! this is a project I should try! I have next to no experience baking bread and the last time I did, it had risen in the oven so big that it touched the top! Are you laughing? I had to laugh…it was alive and taking over!

I am laughing – that is funny. Too much yeast maybe? Or too small of pan?

Thanks! I would recommend having a cookie sheet and bread pan (like 9×5) on hand. That is really it to get started though! have fun!

You should consider selling prints of that bread mosaic! The lighting and bread variety are great.

Now you’ll have to see what toppings go best on them. I’m a huge fan of honey butter. Also, I agree with Suzanne, you could totally sell these pictures, people would love them in kitchens.
