I downloaded the Instagram app and started taking snapshots of my daily life while I was in New York visiting with my girlfriends shortly after Paul deployed. On the day Paul came home, I had taken 601 shots. To keep from going crazy that morning, I uploaded all of them to Blurb and then used about 550 of them to make a 230 page 7×7 book.

Bookopen

TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY PAGES.

It arrived while we were on vacation. And it's awesome.

Blurb will auto-fill all the photos for you, but I wanted to create little grids and I wanted a say over what pictures took up a full page, so I took the time to arrange it all myself. It took a few hours and I mostly just followed a chronological order.

Instead of agonizing over photo placement, I just picked my favorites to be full page images and other detail shots to set in a 2×2 grid. On Saturday, after we got home, it was on the doorstep. I opened the package and wrote allllll over it with a black pen.

Bookintro

I didn't think at all about where the text would go or what I would say. I just paged through and wrote when I had something to add. I used an American Crafts Slickwriter to write and that dried well even on the glossy pages.

Some times I just wrote notes about the photos, other times I wrote text about how I was feeling.

This book is my photo diary of a full life while Paul was deployed. I am so happy to have it made and resting on my shelf for when I need a "you got this" pep talk.

Bookback

heads up – I used an affiliate link to blurb.com throughout this post. Use that link and code 15OFFBLURB to save 15% on your book order. Because the quality of instagram shots isn't always awesome, some of the full page images are a little grainy looking. The book making app told me this would happen and I just ignored it. For me, having the image – poor quality or not – was worth it. The images in the smaller grids are perfect.

This is awesome Elise! I’m not a scrapbooker (I prefer simple albums), but this is a project I could get behind! Bravo to your documentation and bravo for thriving in Paul’s absence. As always, you are such an inspiration!
Also, I’ve designed Blurb books for my (old) job, but never one for myself. How sad is that?!

I love that you wrote all over the pages…I’m a big fan of photo writing/doodling. I’m curious, how do you find the quality of Blurb books compared to Shutterfly? (I thought I’d seen you use Shutterlfy in the past?) My four-year-old kiddo loves thumbing through our Shutterfly photo books, but I’m noticing the binding is coming undone after repeated thumb throughs.
Also, I made those brussel sprouts you blogged about a few weeks back (added spicy Italian chicken sausage & cooked some brown rice to go with) and they were SOOO GOOD! I had never cooked them before & had terrible childhood memories of my mom heating them straight out of a can, but that meal is now added to our meal planning rotation, so thanks for sharing!

I absolutely LOVE this idea Elise — especially the writing notes on it after it’s printed — rather than what I would tend to do which is agonize over what to say using text boxes while making the book. I SO wish I had done something like this when my husband deployed for 8 months way back in August 1990-March 1991. Thanks for the inspiration.

This is an awesome idea!! You are so creative!! LOVE it. I would art journal while I my husband was away, take photos and keep some memories but I never would have thought to put them all into one photo book and then go back and write in it. I love this. I’m going to definitely keep it in mind for some time down the road (thankfully my husband is done deploying 🙂

The book looks great! Thanks for the info also, I was wondering how the full page instagram pics look on blurb. I’m taking a photo a day this year and plan on using blurb or shutterfly to print them.

Perfect. My husband and I have to live separately because of work for a while right now. Not as long or hard as a deployment, but I still hate it. This book is excellent and something similar is in my brain now for this time apart.

I actually haven’t used Shutterfly… so I can’t compare but I am impressed with blurb. Don’t have a little one to page through it – but I assume the binding would stand a bit. 🙂
And wonderful news about the sprouts! Spread the word! They’re awesome!

I do have a question. I am wondering why you needed or wanted an app to take snapshots, when the phone comes with a good camera in it? What is the benefit of using the app?

This week is particularly rough for me and I’m glad I’m an avid reader of your blog. How pleasant it is to wake up this morning and read this text on your photo, “I can’t do it but I’m going to anyway.” It’s such a beautiful photo book and I hope to be lucky enough to have a collection of photos to print about day to day activities! Have a happy Wednesday! ❤

Cool. Re: the image quality… if you take your photos with the Camera app first and then load them into instagram they’re going to be be bigger/better quality than if you take them directly in instagram.
