Yarn

Last week, I said I was going to try to make this cowl. I went to a fancy yarn shop. I talked so some very sweet ladies that worked there. I picked out stunning yarn and circular needles. I watched lots of videos and learned how to purl and slip stitches. I emailed back and forth with Robyn, my knitting mentor.

I did a few practice runs on cheap yarn. I cast on hundreds of stitches with my pretty new yarn. I watched more videos and sent more emails and finally realized that it was just a bit too much. The pattern wasn't turning out like it said it would. And the stitches were insanely tight on the needle. Something wasn't going right and I didn't have the patience to re-figure it out. So I pulled out thousands of stitches. And untangled my very pretty yarn.

Back

And then I went back to the basics.

Front

I am doing regular knit stitches (also known as the garter stitch). But when knitted in a round, they have this awesome "v" pattern on one side and the "normal" knitted pattern on the back side.

Colorchange

I am switching colors every row. (In the photo above you can see I am 7 stitches into a new gray row.) Every row is about 300 stitches. It's squished on my 24" circular needles (which is why it looks ruffled) but I think the finished cowl will be about 50 inches in circumference. And the pattern is turning out so awesome. I really love it. I am addicted to knitting and addicted to the fact that switching colors and knitting in a round makes something easy look intricate.

Ruffled

For what I am doing here, this is the only video I needed. This video talks about adding in a second color of yarn. I imagine this sounds complicated if you are not already familiar with knitting, but really – it's surprisingly easy, especially compared with what I was trying to do! I can't wait to see how it turns out at the end.

looks awesome! what yarn are you working with? is that malabrigo? not sure if you’re familiar with ravelry.com or not – if you’re not. go check it out! it’s an online community for knitters and crocheters. tons of patterns (thousands free!) and insane inspiration. but be careful – it’s completely addicting!

Maybe this is what I should get back into. I haven’t knit in years, but I remember it being so soothing. Looking good, Elise!

Those colours are beautiful! Knitting is on my to-learn list (yet again this year). I love the thought of relaxing on the couch with some beautiful yarn. Keep up the great work!

That fabric is called stockinette. It’s what you would also get if you were knitting on straight needles and alternated one row of knit stitches, following by one row of purl stitches, and so forth. I think stockinette is what most people picture in their mind when they hear the word “knitting”. If you decide you want a scarf, I have this feeling you would like the pattern “Rae” by Jane Richmond. And definitely check out Ravelry. 🙂

I love the colors. The pics on twitter led me to believe you are using leftovers in black & white. Learned to knit in 9th grade (100 years ago) but have never switch yarns or used circulars. Now I’m feeling inspired to get back at it!

Very cute! Isn’t it fun to shop in a fancy yarn shop!? The side with the V’s is the knit side, and the backside with the bumps is the purl side. And yeah, you’d get the same stockinette pattern (front is knit, back is purl) if you were to knit on straight needles and knit for one row and then purl on the other. Circular knitting helps you avoid purling which is a little slower.

Oh, and garter stitch is when you use knit stitch on both sides (rows) of the fabric using straight needles and end up with bumpy fabric on both sides. Basically when you don’t do any purling on straight needles.

It doesn’t have to be overwhelming. At it’s most basic, you can just search patterns and enter your own pattern notes. Forums and groups, etc… are a nice bonus, but you don’t have to use them. It’s a great place to do a pattern search because most people enter modifications, tips, etc… in their notes. So if you are having a problem with a pattern and you search for that pattern and then filter by which ones are helpful, you’ll often find your solution in someone’s notes. The best part is (for example) when you want to knit a shawl out of 600 yards of fingering weight wool, and you do a search and boom! Lots of patterns to choose from, exactly fitted to what you have on hand.

Cascade 220 is a great yarn. I’m partial to the heathers – I think they feel a tad softer still – but you’re quite a graphic lady so the pure colors will probably do you well. Anyways! Solid yarn-choice!

The colors look great and I’m so impressed! I learned to knit in 2004 but I’ve never had luck using circulars… I always mess up. I guess I need to go to my local yarn store and see if they can help me!

I just finished my first ‘in the round’ cowl & I adore it. Instead of stripes, though, I just knitted white & grey together throughout the entire thing for a more random look. I was going to post photos today, but then I became an aunt last week & a photo of my niece took precedance. 😉
I love the colors you chose!!

    Hi Elise,
I love the colours you chose! I was just wondering how many row you are doing in each colour. if it is just one at a time or two before you switch!
I am actualy about to take apart a cowl that I started and am not happy with. I’m thinking this might be what I will use that yarn for.
    Thanks for the inspiration!

I’m in love with this and I think I will have to make one soon – thanks so much for the inspiration! I love knitting in the round — It’s so much fun!! 🙂 Now that you clearly have that down, you’ll have to make one of these like I made for my nephew:
    http://ajsevall.blogspot.com/2009/01/resolutions.html
It’s just a picture on my blog for now. I’ve made three so far… once everyone saw my nephew’s santa hat I’ve had requests for more. I have the pattern and can email it to you if you like 🙂

how do you alternate the colour in each row just tie it on and start the row in the new colour? seems like a silly question but I love the look and am new to knitting.
    Thanks!

I linked to a video that should help show how to add a new color. Because I am alternating back and forth, I keep booth colors connected and just pick them up at alternating times. Again, there are lots of great youtube videos that explain the details.
