Firstfloor

Welcome to Operation Decorate a New Place.

As I mentioned earlier, I have not yet been inside the unit we are going to be renting. But I pieced the (not at all to scale) floor plan together from photos and videos of the space. It's a two story loft and the first floor is mostly a big open room. Which is awesome, but presents a bit of a problem when figuring out how to arrange furniture.

There are a lot of windows and a lot of mirrors so the normal solution – sticking the TV up against the wall and the couch against the other wall doesn't work. My plan is to break up the space just like in the drawing above (except, not with those colors) with a two sided bookshelf.

6a00d8341c71c353ef00e55070b5e58833-800wiThe best part of this layout is that a two sided bookshelf has been my dream since May of 2006 (seriously, this is why I blog). My original plan was to just get a 5×5 Ikea Expedit shelf like in the photo and then stick a small table with the TV on it in front of the shelf to face the couch. But yesterday, while walking through Ikea, I found this Expedit version that is built to work as a media center and thought that would work… until I emailed Paul and he reminded me that our TV is too big for TV spot in the media center.

So I am back to the orginal plan and on a mission to find a low, thin table that can hold our TV and sit in front of the shelf. We will still fill the sides and top shelves with books (with spines facing both sides), vases & other odds and ends until it becomes a perfect room divider.

If you look back up at my "sketch" you'll see the space has two built-in couches by the fireplace. I think the divider will help turn that area into more of a sitting room/reading nook/drinking wine/cozy space. The current couches have an older floral patterned fabric and I am going to cover them in something bright and fun and hang art above each side.

Here's to executing decor dreams five and a half years later. I am so very excited.

p.s. I know I gave up Ikea last spring. But the Expedit bookcases are real gems. 🙂

i’m so excited to watch you transform your new place! i just moved into my current apt in august & just signed a lease for a new place starting next summer with my bf (eep!). my problem now is that i’m trying to think about both spaces at one time. it’s hard for me to motivate myself to put a lot of effort into pieces specific for my current place knowing i’m moving again. moving is exciting and overwhelming with the endless possibilities!

Charming! Is it a working fireplace? Except for that, I could see that space as an amazing play area for a kid in the future, depending on how long you will be there.

I am pretty sure it is working. 🙂 And we are going to be here just until February 2013 – so no kids will be playing quite yet.

Expedits are awesome and they don’t count toward an Ikea addiciton.
Gotta love husbands for the reality check of “it won’t fit.” Saw the best ornate mirror at a garage sale on Saturday, just what I was looking for to fill a spot in the living room. Of course, my husband marched over with a tape measure and rained on my parade.

My absolute favorite part of moving is drawing furniture diagrams! Your new place looks awesome, and I am glad your bookcase dream is coming true!

I would just get a new tv to fit in that space!
ha ha!!! I just say that because we don’t even have a flat screen t.v. yet! ours is ANCIENT and I want a new one!!!
someday, it’s low on my priority list. I want an ipad first and a new lens!
can’t wait to see what you do!

I love my Expedit bookcases — we have a whole bank of them with doors in my craft room along one wall! How fun it is to plan a new space. I look forward to seeing how it all comes together! 🙂

What about another DIY table to match that cool coffee table you made last year to hold your TV? Too matchy-matchy?

    Hi Elise!
I have that expedit/media bookcase. The descriptions states that it fits a 42inch tv, but it doesnt. I have a 42 inch tv and had to remove the top shelf :/
So if you have a 40 inch or smaller it will definitely work =)

Hi Elise, I have been a reader of your blog for quite some time now, but rarely comment – so sorry about that! It is always so inspiring to read your words & see your creations & ideas. I’m excited for you that you finally get to enjoy the brilliance of the Expedit bookshelves – I bought mine a few years ago & still adore them. I was determined to put them together myself, and was so excited when I had, but did not quite anticipate how ridiculously heavy it would be – so you’ll definitely be wanting Paul to help you with the lifting!!

LOL! My hubbs does that same thing!! (Do they all?) I think tape measures should be banned. (In my case, he’s an engineer, so I think it’s ingrained or something.) 🙂

Hi, check out the ikea hacks website. There are a ton of people who have modified the expedite tv unit to house a larger TV. I was just going through the same thing! Good luck!!!
