enJOY it

an archived personal and craft blog from Elise Blaha Cripe.

So I mentioned recently that I made some skincare changes. You might have thought the big reveal was going to be some sort of mind-blowing infomercial. But really it's a little bit boring :

Iam

Yep, that's it.

There are lots of arguments for organic skincare products and I cannot even pretend to understand them all and don't think this is the forum to speak on them. Some people think what's in so many of our skin products is no big deal and some people think it's worth sounding the alarm. I probably fall somewhere in the middle. However, I know that the more natural I eat, the better I feel, so why should that not apply to what I put on my skin as well?

And after taking a look at a cheat sheet (scanned in below / click to enlarge) from the book There's Lead in Your Lipstick (and realizing that everything I owned had at least two of the toxins listed), I decided that when I ran out of a current product (face wash, lotion, makeup) I'd replace it with something that was paraben (and all other toxins) free.

Skin

I have been carrying it around in my wallet for the past two months and so far have switched out my face wash, lotion and mascara. My skin has never been softer and smoother. And even better, the awkward white pores that have been visible around my nose for the past few years are no longer a problem.

Products

Some of the products (starred above) I was able to find at Target. I like the YesTo product line, but should note that they have "fragrance" listed on the label which is not considered natural. The Pangea Organics skincare line is really fantastic and I was lucky enough to grab a bunch of stuff at a discounted rate when Swirl ran a sample sale a few weeks ago. I am pleased with everything, but my favorites would be the Avalon Organics face wash and the Pangea Organics face lotion (I apply it every night and morning).

The mascara is the only make-up switch I have made so far. I figured my eyes deserved the least amount of chemicals and I found the Lavera line at Target. It's not the best in terms of BOLD, FULL LASHES, but it works fine and is toxin-free.

IMG_6523

And a word on body soap : I switched from Lever1000 (or whatever it's called) to natural Burt's Bees at the beginning of September. It seems less soapy (i.e. less bubbles and foam) but my skin still gets clean and even better, I have noticed I no longer need to apply body lotion everyday. I think my old soap was stripping my skin of natural oil and leaving me dry and flaky. My current bar is almost gone and I am excited to try the Dr. Bronner's brand next.

I am still looking for a new mineral based face and body sunscreen & some less-toxic nail polish. I would love to hear if you have any suggestions! Also, if you are into shopping online for Pangea Organics products, I recommend The Green Life which was founded by my friend Jessica & her husband.

EDIT : I can't thank you enough for all these suggestions. Natural skincare for the win. Thank you, thank you & keep them coming.

as far as nail polish goes, I know OPU is better than essie as far as toxins go. Also, Josie Maran and Tart both make organic make-up. Last year, I read the book ‘No More Dirty Looks’ and it completely opened my eyes to all of this. good luck!

I love the Dr. Bronner’s line of products. I prefer the liquid cleanser over the bar and use it as body wash, washing machine detergent and general cleaner. The Husband uses it as shampoo, but I found it made my hair very straw-like.

great post, elise. i really appreciate what you said about switching soaps having an impact on your skin retaining more of its natural oils/moisture. i recently switched back to using dr. bronner’s liquid castille soap (i’ve used the peppermint off an on for over 20 years), and it’s just like you described + my skin thanks me. and then i wonder why i ever switched away in the first place.

elise! this is just what i needed today. i have been frustrated with the state of my skin lately, and i am ready to move in a more natural direction. i recently switched from the fancy cleansers to cetaphil… but as i review the ingredients, even that has some of the no-no’s listed. i have saved the handy-dandy list to my iphone, and plan to keep it with me as i shop and switch to organic products. avalon organics face wash is first on my list.
please keep us posted with more findings!

Elise – Have you heard of SpaRitual products? Their nail polish is vegan as well as free of DBP, formaldehyde and toluene! The spa that I go to uses their products and I would consider their color selection equivalent to OPI (with fun names too!). The color/polish is long lasting too (with a base & top coat, of course 🙂 I really can’t say enough good about their products!

I have switched over to Arbonne for makeup and skin care. I use their face wash, lotions, cover up, foundation, bronzer, eye shadow… everything! I haven’t made the switch to their shampoo, but really only because it is expensive and you can’t switch everything at once. I LOVE their products and would recommend to everyone I know. You need to order through a consultant in Canada, so I would imagine it is the same for the states. Oh and they are 100% vegan – no toxins, no chemicals and all natural fragrance (orange, citrus, avadaco, strawberry, etc)

love, love, love that you said if I was feeding my body better stuff then why not my skin. absolutely! I need to check your list with mine and see if the dermatologist products are natural. I am doubting it! the bar soap pic looks like the same soap they sell at the hot yoga studio that I go to. I always wondered what was so special about it! ha ha! for nail polish I have tried zoya and really liked it. thank you SO much for always sharing your successes and experiments. have a wonderful weekend! big hug! ciao!

Thanks for the great info! I’m always looking for a better way 🙂 For nail polish, I totally recommend this: http://www.zoya.com/content/38/category/. I hadn’t used it before, but when a friend got married in July, she bought some for her Mom. This stuff is fantastic! And I love that they have samples nails of the colors so you can choose which colors you want to buy 🙂 And for soap, you have to try this: http://www.bonsavon.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=pp-35&Category_Code=0610. We first tried it from a store called Body Basics on Main Street in Placerville (near Sacramento). We haven’t used anything else in the last 8 years since we discovered it. Almost never need lotion – it’s amazing! 🙂

Dr Bronners is my FAVORITE! like another commenter said ^way up there^ I use it for everything that I can. I even wash my dogs in it. I buy the large liquid soap bottles. I’ve the bottle I’m about to run out of now since March. A little goes a long way. Peppermint is my fave. It makes you all tingly & the smell fills your house ❤ I love that you posted about this. & sometimes it is really hard to distinguish the good from the bad when most company these days have a ‘natural’ product line. Have a great weekend Elise!

i am OBSESSED with bronners! the peppermint is really awesome if you like minty stuff – a strong wake-up in the morning! i love the bar soap in the shower and the liquid for hand soap.
a good resource that i recommend is the Environmental Working Group’s Cosmetic Safety Database (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/) where you can type in a product and it gives a score between 1-10 ranking it’s safety, with an explanation why it is good or not. it isn’t totally comprehensive, but a good resource!

not to be a downer, but while Lush is a step up from a lot of drugstore brands, they still use Propylene Glycol (which is derived from petrochemicals), Methylparaben, Propylparaben, etc. like elise said, some people think those are horrible and some may not worry about them, but i think it’s worth pointing out.
also, Lush uses “fragrance” or “perfume” without defining it further. because fragrance is a proprietary ingredient, companies can dump any chemicals in a product and call it fragrance and not have to reveal what it is. so i personally chose to avoid companies that use that word.

I use Alba mineral protection SPF 30 because it’s available at my grocery store, and I love that it’s fragrance-free, but it’s really thick and a bit hard to spread so I might look for one of the other natural brands.
I use Alaffia Everyday Shea unscented body lotion and ShiKai Borage SPF 15 facial moisturizer.

    Hi Elise,
I’ve been reading your blog for years! And I’m really happy to see that you’re switching over to organic, non-toxic cosmetic products. I have been an active volunteer with the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics for more than three years now, and regularly speak to groups of women (and sometimes men) regarding these toxins and how they can avoid them. (The website for the Campaign is http://www.safecosmetics.org).
I see that one of the commenters already linked to the Skindeep Database by the Environmental Working Group – they are one of the organizations that makes up the Campaign and a wonderful resource.
Another great resource is “The Story of Cosmetics” video by Annie Leonard, who also did the amazing “The Story of Stuff” video. http://storyofstuff.org/cosmetics/
I hope you continue down this path, and I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about these toxins, the Campaign or other ways you can become more informed or involved.

Congrats on your successful transition to natural & organic skincare products! I switched nearly 6 years ago & would never go back!
I’ve been using Dr. Bronner’s (both in bar & liquid soap form) for the entire time and still haven’t found anything better. I’m a sucker for the Almond smell 🙂
For face wash, I use Kiss My Face Potent & Pure Start Up Exfoliating Face Wash (http://kissmyface.com/product/item/77) – been using that for years too. Whenever I get a zit, I swipe some Desert Essence Blemish Touch Stick (http://www.desertessence.com/skin-type/oilycombination/blemish-touch-stick) on it.
I saw your mention of looking for safer sunscreen. Daily, I use 100% Pure Argan Oil Facial Moisturizer, which has SPF 30 (http://www.100percentpure.com/ARGAN-OIL-FACIAL-MOISTURIZER-SPF-30-s/561.htm). I’ve been using it for over 6 months & my face has never been more fabulous! As far as body SPF, I recommend Vive Sana Solar to Polar (I use the “baby” version; http://vivesana.com/) – it’s thick, but it works well – & Eco Logical (http://ecologicalskin.com/).
I’ve been a freelance eco-writer for over 6 years & have even written a book on the subject, so if you have any questions or just want someone else to chat with who “gets it”, feel free to drop me a line 🙂 (I can give you some great recommendations for hair care stuff too)

I am on the same game plan – as I run out of bad/poisonous stuff I replace it with natural stuff. It’s a fun game, excited to see you have been having so much success!
Here is the list I have generally been following: http://cavegirleats.com/bodycare/ (I baking soda’d my hair for the first time today…)and I just got the “Good Guide” app for my iPhone that will let me scan products in the store and see what the best alternatives are based on health, eco-friendly packaging, and how charitable the company is. I also splurged on some of this “natural” nail polish the other day because I heart the colors and packaging: http://www.scotchnaturals.com/
P.s. I’m still stalking you on here all the time, glad to see Paul’s deployment, while trying, has had some real bright spots for you. Thinking good thoughts for you and there’s always a futon in DC for you if you end up over here on your travels!

So I went on a natural beauty kick about a year ago and some changes have stayed and others fell by the wayside, but this is what has worked for me. By far, Badger sunscreen is the absolute best I tried and seemed to do the best in reviews online…its all I’ll use and all I will use on our kids when we have them. I also LOVE the Badger chapstick (the mint kind, not the cocoa butter which has a different, waxier texture..the mint is much smoother)…I loved it far more than the Burts Bees but that was just a personal preference and I like that it is certified organic…its also local for me. I switched over shampoos to Kiss My Face shampoo that doesnt have sulfates in it…much less suds, but just as good of a clean. And the two most drastic and strange changes I made were ditching facewash all together and using baking soda as a scrub, it works almost like a microdermibrasion for me and has made the biggest difference in my often tempramental skin…and I have also ditched lotion in favor of a sugar/safflower oil scrub in the shower…I just make a paste of the two and scrub it on…after the shower my skin feels a little greasy, but within a half hour or so its all soaked in and my skin is SO SOFT! I feel slightly like a hippie typing those last two out, but seriously they have made such a difference and I figure if I can eat it, it should be safe to put on my skin. Oh, and I also use and love Toms of Maine toothpaste that is also sulfate free.

for make-up i’ve had great experience with W3LL People. i use their foundation stick and apply it with my fingers (or a sponge) – can be light coverage / spot concealer or a full-face for my workdays. i also love their bronzer & powders (both loose), but powder is usually pretty safe, even from say, maybelline. make-up is the last bridge i have to fully cross in terms of going green!

some Burts Bees and Yes To products are pretty good, but for me, i’d rather support the lines that go 100%. the ones that don’t just have 1 “natural” line in their wide range of products, but those that are a totally eco-conscious and safe company. those that invest in not only good ingredients, but purchasing those ingredients from small farms, packaging in recyclable or biodegradable products, etc. Pangea Organics is awesome at that. Burts Bees is owned now by Clorox, so i don’t want to particularly support a company that creates so many toxic products. when a large company creates a “green” line, i just know they’re doing it for sales. if they cared about the health of their customers or the quality of the product, their other 15 lines wouldn’t exist. so my take is a bit more political or “big picture” than the quality of those individual lines. 🙂
