enJOY it

an archived personal and craft blog from Elise Blaha Cripe.

On September 11, 2001, I woke up early and got ready to go to school. I was a junior in high school. My friend Erin, who I carpooled with, called and told me to turn on the TV. I started watching just as the second plane hit. I remember thinking it had to be an accident. I remember not being able to comprehend the level of anxiety so many people were feeling. I remember coming home from school gluing myself to the television until it was time for bed. I remember watching people walk around numbly, holding photos of loved ones they were hoping to find. I remember the paper released a special afternoon edition, something I had never seen before. It was filled with photos that I couldn't believe were real.

On September 11, 2011, I woke up early to talk to my husband via video chat. He is in Afghanistan in great part because of what happened ten years ago. I still cannot understand the level of anxiety that family members of missing loved ones experience. I hope and pray that I never have to.

Today, I remember those that were lost that horrible day and all those that have been lost since then. I pray for their families and I pray for Peace.

Thinking of all the wonderful men and women that are doing their job to protect all of us back at home. Praying for peace, today especially for all the families who lost a loved one.

September 11 2001 will always be a day i’ll remember. I can tell exactly where and what i was doing when i first heard the news. I was cleaning the TV room when my father came back from work (it was afternoon for us in Paris) and asked me to turn on the TV. We were glued to the tv and couldn’t believe what was going on. The week that followed i was with my grand parents and we kept watching the news to try and understand what had happened.
I can’t believe how this day change the life of so many people. And how it changed the world too. 10 years later we are still affected by the consequenced of this event.

Tell Paul that the world is a better place, because HE IS IN IT.
Thank you both . Him for being there and you for letting him go.

Great post Elise. Thank you and Paul for what you’re doing for the people of our country. I too remember where I was that day and what I was doing. I was writing an essay on Civil Disobedience by Thoreau for my college English class. My Husband called from work and told me to turn the TV on and I too saw the second plane hit the second tower. I remember watching them towers collapse. I wrote another essay a few days later on my thoughts and feelings of the day. I posted it on my blog. I read it in front of my class which took a lot of courage because I don’t like public speaking.

I was sleeping in because I was supposed to fly that night. My Aunt called and woke me up. It was right after the first plane hit. I turned on the TV just after the second one hit. I couldn’t turn off the TV. I didn’t end up flying that night, but I did fly the first night that they allowed flying again and it was surreal. My life and work changed completely. No longer was I just a “weekend warrior”. It seems like it was just yesterday. crazy when you really think about it. I can’t get over how surreal it feels even now to watch it again on TV. Definitely a defining moment in nearly everyone’s lives.

On Sept 11, 2001 my husband was home with me on paternity leave, our 1st born son was a few weeks old. We lived on base in southern California at the time, and a college friend on the east coast called too early in the morning to tell us what was happening; we turned the tv on and watched the horrors unfold. At the time my husband had been a Marine for all of our married 7 years, and I knew in an instant our world had changed forever.
10 years, 2 more children, and this is the third Sept 11th my husband has been in Afghanistan. I struggle now to explain to our 3 children what happened that day, and why their daddy continues to have to go…
I am not sure anyone prays for peace harder than those who serve and their loved ones.
