enJOY it

oh. man.

I am having a hard time moving this morning. Yesterday, I took my first Bar Method class on the recommendation of a few of my college girlfriends, who despite being scattered across the country are all hooked on this workout

I knew it was going to be hard.

I knew the point of the class was to work your muscles to the point that they shake.

But – DUDE.

At least three times during the hour I had to fight back tears.

It was that intense.

So, like a crazy person, I paid another $90 for unlimited classes over the next 30 days. If there is one thing I have learned from this half marathon training it's that you have to shake it up to see results. Also known as "If you want something you've never had before, you have to do something you've never done before."*

This is what I do know : I spent seven years pounding out 25 minutes on a treadmill a couple times a week. And my body never changed and excercising never got easier. Then last year, I started tracking runs everything shifted. These past few months, since I have started training and pushing myself to run further, my mental and physical shape has improved so much more than I thought it could.

So my goal with this new class is to push that comfort zone further while streghening and toning all those muscles that work so hard to keep me going. Although, given how difficult simply moving is this morning I'm not really sure how I'm going to get running + Bar Method in sync.

I'll report back in 30 days.

*this quote is apparently everywhere. But I've seen it attributed to Dina Reed.

I haven’t heard of that class before, but I’ve had my eye on some similar-sounding classes.
Working myself really hard sometimes scares me – it’s why I don’t go to gyms and don’t really get into strength training, but I know it’d be good to change up my running & yoga routine.
I’m curious to hear how the month goes!

totally. I was so scared all week to go. I LOVE yoga, but when I am not consistently going to practice, its hard to let my mind go and really get into it. This class was so fast paced, I didnt have time to think about other stuff or look at the clock – which I was happy about.

I do it here in Portland. Yeah – it kicks your booty. Stick with it. It gets better (though not necessarily easier!) 🙂

Ha Ha. I recently heard Bar Method mentioned and I thought it was a mixology class. This looks just as fun. I’ll have to see if there is something in my area. Need to mix up my exercise routine. Thanks for sharing.

I have never felt the burn quite like Bar Method! I love it and hate it at the same time. I did the month unlimited too and got hooked.
I hope you enjoy it! For today – take a little walk and drink LOTS of water 🙂

I think my challenge is living in NJ where the weather is totally unreliable for outdoor exercise, gyms are a fortune and my apt is too small for a treadmill/I can’t afford one. Yes, I know you could make excuses till the cows come home. Just have to get your butt doing SOMETHING. Its all about momentum. Still…. ughhhh
Proud and a little jealous of you Elise!!!

I usually can’t even get myself to go running (this morning would be a perfect example), I can’t imagine going to a bar method class. Good luck! I’m rooting for your!

The bar method sounds like torture to me, haha 😀
I’ve decided to start working out (regularly) this summer. Gyms are super expensive here in Germany ($60/month on a student budget? uuhm…) and I live on a hill so I hate running outdoors because it’s so much harder than on a treadmill. I really liked your post on documenting your workouts. I’ll try it this summer. Can’t wait to hear how the bar method worked out for you. Keep us posted 🙂

I started a bar class about a month ago and LOVE it. It took quite a few classes for me to not be drained by the end. Now I feel great after the classes. If you have a Pure Barre close to you, check it out! Enjoy the shake!!

I started doing the Dailey Method (similar to the Bar Method) in Berkeley a year or so ago and am OBSESSED! The first few classes are brutal but they do get easier and I’ve really seen a difference in my muscle strength and tone. Stick with it…it’s worth it :).
