Do you remember that I am having a love affair with staining? Of course you do!

I have been dreaming of a project like this since before Christmas. I really wanted to hammer nails into small wooden pieces and wrap string in the shape of a star for decorations. But then one thing led to another and I was still scared of the hardware store at the time and so nothing got done.

IMG_2236

But NOW, my project is back and better than ever. When we had the light pine wood cut down for the coffee table, there was a leftover square. I immediately started contemplating the most interesting shape to string on it.

At first I considered a "C" because that is our last initial. But that didn't feel right. And a heart felt too obvious. And a star felt too holiday. So finally, I landed on an ampersand. To me, an ampersand means LOVE. So that made it perfect. (I just realized, I should have told Paul this was his anniversary gift.)

IMG_2207

To get the shape, I took a big piece of paper (actually one of my old calendar pages. This calendar has been the best investment of my life) and free hand drew an ampersand. Then I used a ruler to get the width of the ampersand equal in every space. Does that make sense? Basically, I moved the ruler around each point until the edges of the symbol were three inches apart everywhere. Then I cut it out, taped it to the newly stained board and hammered nails around the edges of the paper.

The last step was to wrap string around from nail to nail. At first, I wanted to create some sort of organized pattern, but that didn't really work. So instead I just wove the string back and forth wherever it seemed to look right. I used just one piece of string and then tied the ends together when it was all done.

I'm in love with it. It's big (almost 2'x2') and probably too heavy to hang on a wall. But leaning, it's killer. And it's fancying up our new living room that I can't wait to share with you.

Elise, this is really fun! I love it. I also love that it is simple and accessible yet looks like it could be purchased at West Elm or the like.

Hey Elise, i love staining too. And, i love your project. Something fun to consider is using a spray glaze over the top of the wood after you’ve stained it. (If you are into that look) It would probably take almost a whole can on a 2′ x 2′ piece, but the results are a glass shiny top and makes the grain of wood seem even MORE lustrous. I had to do a string project like that when I was in middle school. I was doing a panther shape. I remember. I hated it. Now if I had thought of doing something more cool like this.. maybe I wouldn’t have been so miserable that week when I was 13.

this is so neat! i’m going to make my own, but i’m not very good at drawing straight lines, or letters, so i think i’m going to print out my ampersand or whatever i decide on and use the print out for a guide. phew! can’t wait!

hi hi, I’m having fun exploring your “new” site. I was wondering if you’ve considered making several smaller stars and selling some in your shop. Might be a nice little holiday addition and new way to bring in some more profit. just a thought.

What an effective project and yet so easy.
I’m interested in why you see an ampersand as love. I understand if it’s put between the initials of you and your partner’s name e.g mine would be C&D but just on it’s own, I’ve never thought of it as anything but ‘and’.
I’m off to look at more of your projects and the challenge you’ve set yourself before you turn 27

hi Diane, I am not sure – I just love the ampersand… I think because it is a tool used for joining.

You’re quite a deep thinker then – I might just have to stick around 🙂
I just read your entry on starting your quilt. I just won a book on patchwork pattern instruction, which I’ve done small amounts of before but I might now just have to do an up to date one. Thanks for being there.

Back in the 70’s JoAnn’s Fabric sold kits that were string art. You received a pattern & the brass tip nails. I did quite a few of them. The one I loved most was a zebra on a board covered with black velvet. It was gorgeous. Unfortunately, I gave it away. I added some natural elements to the picture to make it more my own creation. It was lots of fun working with the string.

    Hi Elise!
I know I am wayyyy late to comment on this post but I am in need of a good DIY project and could not get your ampersand string art out of my head. Just amazing.
Question, when wrapping the string did you go along the outside first? From the photo the string looks like its along the outside which really defines the ampersand nicely! I am just starting out as a DIY crafter too!

I did go around the outside, not sure if I did that first or last or what… do not think it will matter 🙂
