Trunkpush

TA-DA! We got our trunk home. It was pretty high tech : we pushed it four blocks on a rolling dolly. This trunk is HUGE. Much bigger that I realized. I figured it would make a good coffee table until it was in our living room next to our current coffee table and it stood 11 inches taller.

Not quite right. So the backup plan is to replace our TV table with it. It's about the right height and a perfect footprint for that side of the room.

But first, I need to finish up the inside. I mentioned earlier this trunk needs some TLC. I love the worn look of the outside, for sure. However, the lining on the inside is junky. I would be uneasy storing stuff in there (and right now I am thinking books or blankets) until it gets relined.

I am planning on relining it with thin fabric or maybe even heavy paper. I need to try a few things. Hopefully this weekend I'll get it done.

It's so pretty though. I can't complain too much.

AND ALSO : I mentioned over the weekend that Paul and I were going to be curing our Ikea addiction. To be clear, I love Ikea. Some of their stuff is awesome for what we need (like the bookcases) but other pieces, we end up buying because they are cheap, not because they are our style or we really love them. After months of pinning favorite rooms on Pinterest, I realized I want to make our space look a little more collected and a little less like an Ikea or big box store catalog. The key of course, is collecting the new pieces and it's going to take forever and ever. But this trunk was a good start and I am excited to share more of the adventure here.

I love the trunk! Good luck redoing the inside, I can’t wait to see how it turns out. 🙂

I so understand your urge to “grow out of” IKEA. I used to know all my furniture pieces by their first name – the Swedish one, of course. Then, about two or three years ago, I was at the same point you are at now – some cheap pieces simply collapsed on us. Ugh. Since then we were lucky enough to receive some heritage pieces (a sofa from Nils’ great-great-grandparents!) and hope to continue this not-solely-IKEA-way … good luck for you two!

it’s great when a piece has multiple potential uses. because we are apt. dwellers, who hope one day to have a house and babies, i always think, “office now. dining room later?” or “tv stand now. kid’s dresser later?” it doesn’t make or break a purchase (aka, live in the now) but try to have that flexibility.
i totally believe, in home and fashion, to buy pieces you truly love. whether they are IKEA and Forever 21 or luxury splurges – buying what makes your heart sing is the best investment.

I love simple exteriors with bold interiors…like the lining of a jacket. I am obsessed with the idea of someday when I own a house I am going to paint my walls a simple color and then wallpapering the insides of the closets with loud vibrant prints. 🙂

This piece is awesome – and a great way to “hide” stuff. I recently bought a storage bench that is perfect for quickly tossing in toys, books, and blankets before people come over. You could switch out the trunk’s hardware to create different looks. Excited to see what you do with it!

What a great trunk! I found one about 2 years ago with plans for a coffee table- but discovered it was too high. Although it did end up working out great at the corner of the couches as a side table of sorts- the height worked much better there. I bought some vintage wallpaper to redo the inside of mine…although I have yet to get around to that! Cheers!

It was beautiful at one time. Now it is a stained and torn mess. Unsalvageable unfortunately. But I am excited for a new (clean) pattern!!
