You guys.

I don't blame you if cannot believe it took me eight months to get this room together. I mean really. It still looks pretty empty. But I should have snapped some before photos. Back when we had mismatched bedside tables and nothing on the walls. Because, at least now, I have put some thought into it. (And it's clean.)

IMG_1096

It was tricky to photograph. There is only one window for natural light and it's tucked away in a little corner. We didn't have much use for the corner, but it was a good place to stash an extra bookshelf once I decided to reorganize the office.

This is a view of the room from that little corner. Week one in this apartment, we took the doors off the closet and bathroom. They both opened in and made for super cramped spaces. I hung curtain rods in each of the doorways and sewed simple curtains to blog off the space. I love the result and will probably replace the closet doors with curtains in all our future places.

One of the first changes I made when I decided to get serious about finishing off our bedroom was to buy that mirrored table on the right. It is from Target and is supposed to be a TV console. But it worked with the other bedside table I already had and I like having the extra space for my makeup & etc.

Across the room from our bed is our painted dresser. And on top of it is my new favorite art. Screen printed wayfarers from BKNY. They are living in our bedroom now, but I think they will be in a more prominent place in our next apartment.

I am on a mission to get more art on our walls. This wall to the left of the bed is a start. From left to right : photo by Christian Chaize at 20×200, a mini bus roll by Kal Barteski & a wedding gift made by my friend Sara.

So, that's that! It's done. Finishing off this room and typing up this post just made me excited for when we move again and I can start all over. Hopefully next time around we'll be in an apartment that lets renters paint the walls. I think wall color brings rooms to life and helps them look fuller. It might be that this bedroom would just need a coat of paint and then it would less empty to me.

Sources : mirrored tables, round wall mirror and lamp base from Target; bed frame and lamp shade from West Elm; dresser and hanging lamp from Ikea; love wood carving from William Dohman; wall frames from Michael's and Target; heart art from Ork Posters (It's so hard to see. I want to reorder it in black & white); hanging necklace rack from Anthropologie; curtains were cut and sewn from a wall hanging sold at Urban Outfitters; random dishes & vases collected from various places; quilt, headboard and silhouette art are handmade.

Elise, honestly, this stuff takes time. I’ve been married for over 10 years and I feel like I am just settling into a style I like! And it hasn’t been for lack of trying! So 8 months feels like rocket-speed to me. Bravo! Especially considering how much of this is homemade!
I LOVE the sunglass frames. Those are stinkin’ adorable. Love it.
looking forward to the next projects…

The room looks great! I have that map wall hanging in orange and have it hanging in my bathroom to cover up the laundry hookups that I’ve yet to use. It looks great as a curtain for your room!!

I love that Christian Chaize print, and that you have a 20×200 (I’m a huge fan of JBG)! This space looks absolutely live-in-able and the color of your dresser is yummy! Have fun and thanks for giving us a peep at your inner world!

What did you do with the doors that used to be on the closet? Don’t they just get in your way?

Oh I love it so much! The fabric projects are simply stunning and the art is fab. I bet with posts like these it won’t be too long until we see you starting up an interior design side project!

We have a stacked washer/dryer in our other bathroom. It had some space on either side and we shoved one door on each. Fits perfectly and keeps them totally out of the way.

Elise.. You have been really inspiring lately. (Not that you aren’t always : ) I feel like you are the only blog I need to visit because you do it all. Paper. Fabric. Paint. Decor. This weekend I am planning on doing your headboard and my first quilt. Hugs, Mandy

Love the room, Elise – congrats! If it makes you feel better, I’ve lived in my condo for almost 6 years and have just (in the past 4 months) gotten serious about hanging art on the walls. It truly is pathetic, I know. I love what I have propped up against the walls and I love it even more when it’s ON the walls – yet pounding gallery hooks in the walls sorta freaks me out. It seems so permanent to me. Completely irrational, I know. Nail holes seem like such a big commitment to me for some reason. I just need to suck it up and go for it, full throttle 😉
BTW – I just looked at that lamp base at Target yesterday. Thinking about it. . .

It looks so great! Decorating takes time: I think when you do it all at once you don’t get to really live with each piece and decide what fits.
I can’t help but wonder: do you have to kick Paul out of the bedroom when you need to use the bathroom, since your curtain-door is hear-through? I once stayed at a hotel with curtains in the bathroom door and I had to kick everyone out to use the bathroom: drove me nuts!

LOL, we have two bathrooms, so that helps. But no … if we have guests or something and one of us need to use the bathroom in our bedroom, I shut the main door to the room.

I love the glasses above the dresser. And good job on the dresser too. And I think I saw a little Kal Barteski in there somewhere too (bus roll?). Cute bedroom. Love it.

I love how bright and fresh your room looks! My husband and I have been married six months tomorrow and have been slowly trying to decorate our apartment as well, but it seems our room has fallen to the last priority. I’ve actually been eying the same dresser at Ikea for months now and LOVE how it turned out painting it that bright color! I just might have to do the same.
I recently found the picture if your dresser on someone’s tumblr blog, which drew me to your blog initially and I have to say that after reading several of your recent posts, your blog is already becoming one of my favorites!

Hi Elise! I am thinking about making window curtains out of the same tapestry (because yours look so awesome!), and I was wondering, since you had to cut in the middle of the map, did you hem the sides that you cut?

    Like

  30. elise blaha Avatar

hi Skye, yes, I hemmed the cut edges and the bottom too so it was the right height. 🙂

Thanks! You did a great job, it doesn’t look like there’s any of the middle of the map missing where you hemmed 🙂
