We did it!

We also cheated – our headboard is 30×60 inches and is currently hanging on the wall behind the bed. I need a garage and some power tools, and as soon as I have those, our headboard will have legs. But right now? This totally works for us.

This project is seriously simple. A good staple gun is all you need. Ours was tedious because I took the time to sew striped fabric into a chevron pattern. I used this method, but made the strips about 10 inches wide. It was tricky matching them up perfectly which I blame on my inability to measure, but otherwise, it worked out well. I loved doing a big sewing project. So much I think I'm going to make a new duvet cover. The trick is finding something to match the black and white… I want another pattern.

If your curious, the price to make our own headboard broke down like this :

  • 4 yards of this fabric : $32
  • 30×60 inch plywood : $25 – we had to buy a much bigger piece at home depot and get it cut down. There are cheaper ways to do this, I'm sure.
  • 2 inch foam : $40
  • fasteners to hang on wall : $12

We already had a staple gun so I didn't include that cost. And instead of buying quilters batting to cover the foam and cushion the edges, I used a mattress cover we were going to give to goodwill. But still, a custom headboard for $109? I'll take it.

Full bedroom tour to come when I actually complete the bedroom. So maybe March? This headboard was a big step though! Happy to have it done.

links : crate & barrel sheets, carved love sign, mirrored table, lamp from target (obviously still needs a shade), silhouette DIY tutorial coming soon.

WOW, did that come out perfect or what?? I’ve got to be honest – when you announced your chevron-quilting plans I was a bit skeptical; that’s a project that requires precision that I don’t like to deal with. But it definitely worked!

Elise, excellent job matching the stripes; you rock!!! And, I have to say, that headboard is SO you!! I love my staple gun; possibly bought it before you were born. 🙂 It’s a great tool, which you’ll use in SO many different ways over the years.

this is fucking amazing. i saw it on my blackberry at like, 8am + have been waiting to comment all day! i hope you actually leave the yellow bedding because it looks SO pretty with this new headboard. great contrast of colors + patterns. i’m looking for mirrored or glossy nightstands, just super wide + tall, which is impossible. love that look!

this looks awesome! I’ve had my make your own headboard project in my head for awhile now. Even got my mother (an amazing seamstress) on board to help, just haven’t gotten it done. I have the most amazing brown and green damask to use too….I think maybe you’ve inspired me to get it done.

Where did you get your foam from? I was looking at the fabric store and it’s not wide enough there. Did you have to piece it together or was it one big sheet? Thanks!

I bought screws and hooks that were meant to hold something heavy on the wall. Check with your local hardware store to see what the options are.

Can you talk us through the quilters batting (which I know you didn’t use – you had an alternative) but does it just go right over and stapled to back? Did you cut out the corners to reduce bulk at back once it’s all folded? or what?….!! (this is from an extremely knowledge-less sewing-y person but can handle a staple gun and think she might be able to do this person!) As soon as you mentioned quilters batting I freaked out with complete lack of knowledge!!

I just wrap like a present and staple it down. no sewing, no extra trimming, just staple, staple, staple.
