The most used wedding gift so far has been our Cuisinart food processor. (Actually that's a lie. The Kitchen Aid gets used about every three days to make cookies and now pasta. But it's a super close second) Obviously we're all about it when it comes to pesto. But an extra bonus is we can make our own hummus.

Here is our recipe (makes enough as a dinner for two & probably leftovers for lunch the next day) :

  • 15 oz can of garbanzo beans (also called chickpeas) – rinsed and drained
  • 2 T tahini
  • 2 cloves garlic – peeled
  • about 12 pitted kalamata olives* (hence the purple-ish color)
  • olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste

Mix the first four ingredients in the food processor.

Add olive oil while the processor is blending until you've reached a "hummus" consistency. (Should be sort of like thick frosting – yes, that's the best description we could come up with.) We usually add about 1/4 C. Add your salt and pepper and give it a final spin. Be sure to taste and see if you like the consistency and flavor!

Serve with pita, carrots, red bell pepper. And we love to enjoy it with chicken and red wine too.

*If you don't like or have kalamata olives, use juice from about 1/2 lemon to enhance the flavor.

Hummus is my favorite. I love red pepper flavored hummus best.
Have you ever seen “carrot chips”? they’re carrots sliced up to look like chips– they’re great for eating hummus 🙂
Thanks for the recipe! I’m going to have to try to make my own instead of buying 3 containers of it at a time…

I second the carrot chips. ACTUALLY. I just take big fat carrots and slice them really thinly and on the diagonal to make big chippy-scoops for the most hummus possible.
AND, I hate my food processor. It’s Cuisinart, too. I bought it with high hopes of making baby food and haven’t used it in 2 years BECAUSE IT’S awkward to clean up and I am high on the productivity of cleaning up.
I’ll send you mine in trade for some of your fresh and yummy hummus.

we LOVE our food processor too + it gets used for hummus as well! scott is the resident maker of the hummus in our home, so i’ll ask him to gimme his recipe to share with you. i know we don’t use olives (though that’s on his list to try w/ the next batch, thanks to your kind Twitter suggestion) + do use lemon.
we use dried garbanzo beans from Whole Foods bulk bins though, for a number of reasons:
    1) no waste since we scoop ’em into produce bags (like i’m sending you) then deposit in a glass container in our pantry,
    2) no BPA! all canned foods contain BPA in their liners + while studies vary on thoughts of how much is in there + how readily it leaches into your food, as an endocrine disruptor, i choose to avoid it whenever possible,
    3) they’re yummier! you can’t tell the difference in the hummus very much, but if you use them in salads, like i do, or any other meals, their texture + taste is better than canned.
just a tip if you want to try that route!

It is a hassle to clean, that is why Paul didnt want one for so long. Now we just try to use it more than once each time (like hummus then pesto without cleaning it) and then let it air dry overnight. Not sure how our routine will change with 2 little ones though — probably less homemade hummus. ha!

    No less
hummus with two little ones… just different tools. That darn
magic bullet is SO EASY to clean – ours gets used for
EVERYTHING. From pesto to hummus to grinding flax seeds and
coffee beans. AND the baby food. Its my workhorse.

    BEST
SMOOTHIES EVER. No mess. I think it might be kinda red neck….
but whatever. I can throw the whole thing in the dishwasher and
    be done.

I LOVE hummus. The garlic-ier the better. It’s too bad my husband won’t come anywhere near me if I eat it haha
