Creative, Inc., Domino: The Book of Decorating
& No Impact Man

It's been a good summer for reading. I raced through the Stieg Larsson books & Little Bee. I went back and reread most of the Harry Potters & Breaking Dawn (by far my favorite of the Twilight series). And then when I ran out of books to read and re-read, I started going through back issues of Domino. I'm so glad I decided they needed to make the cross country move from Maryland to California.

And that got me excited about purchasing the Domino book. And I loved Craft, Inc. so I'm super excited about Creative, Inc. And yesterday I saw this post on Lovely Morning and decided to check out No Impact Man.

So it looks like as soon as my Amazon delivery arrives I'll be all about non-fiction for awhile. Which is totally rad as they all look inspiring.

What about you? Read any good books recently?

a RR for Breaking Dawn and some new titles: The Time Traveler’s wife (A.Niffenneger), Obsession (by A.S. Byatt), Stolen Figues (by Mark Rotella), Small Yellow Lemons (by Kajsa Ingemarsson) and Shanghai Girls ( by Lisa See). The 2nd and 3rd S. Larsson are still on my must-read-list. I’m currently reading “The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet” by David Mitchell, which is a historical fiction about Dutch sailors living on a tiny tiny tiny island just off the coast of Nagasaki (the only place foreigners were allowed in Japan for a time).
I also recommend you check out “A Happy Marriage” by Rafael Yglesias. It’s a memoir, focusing on his marriage to his wife, who is dying from cancer (I’m not giving anything away by telling you she does die). He examines the love for her when he first started dating her and the love he has for her towards the end of their marriage — love, but in very different ways. I think you’d enjoy (but be warned, I cried a lot).

the domino book is great. full of eye candy, but really helpful in making a plan for a room + then executing it. mine is filled with post-its + dog-ears 🙂
glad you’re reading “no impact man”. it was the catalyst for a whole wave of new changes scott + i took upon ourselves. it’s also why i still feel guilty for that cup i threw away at lemonade when you were here! they also made a movie, but i haven’t seen it. heard they come off very differently on film than in the book. hmmm.

I read “No Impact Man” and saw the movie. Check out the movie too! It is interesting to see his wife’s reaction to his experiment!
There are some other fun books about a special project that people take on for a whole year. The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin and Living Oprah by Robyn Okrant are two that I recently read. In Living Oprah the author tries to take all of the advice that Oprah gives on her show, website, and magazines. They are both interesting!

I loved Water for Elephants this summer, as well as the Hunger Games series. The Hunger Games is a bit dark, but really makes you think. It’s a YA series, but VERY well written and is just… amazing.

The best book I’ve read this year is The Help, so far! I just started Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I also have The Hunger Games on my to-read list, along with A History of Love and whichever Jodi Picoult is nearest to me when I reach for a book. She never disappoints.

Elise, that is so funny, I always start to re-read the Harry Potter books when I run out of things to read! I also raced through a number of books this summer, and then was halfway through Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when I finally decided to get my butt to the bookstore. I am currently reading Catcher In The Rye, which shockingly, I know, I have never read!
Good Recommendations from things I’ve recently read:
    The Help
    Sarah’s Key
The Girls From Ames (ok, so not the BEST book I’ve read, but interesting and it will make you want to have a reunions with your gal pals)
Oh, there must be so many more…
    Happy reading!!

Everyone has mentioned the Hunger Games series, but it really is addictive and that’s 3 books you can count on. Also, Still Missing by Chevy Stevens – creepy but unputdownable; A Vintage Affair by Isabel Wolff was fun, similar to Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos; The Flavia mysteries by Alan Bradley are good too.
Enjoy! You have a lot of good reading ahead.

Right now I’m in the middle of “The Crying Tree” by Naseem Rakha. Also really good and totally different.

    * A Great and Terrible Beauty – goth Victorian stuff. SO GOOD. Great for Twilight lovers. This is the first in the series.
