So, yep. I am doing my own flowers. This means centerpieces and bouquets. I have the centerpieces down and last week I practiced the bouquets. Here's the thing. They're flowers. They're pretty. Especially when they are imperfect and a bit causal.

IMG_3225
I bought two dozen orange roses at Costco to practice with. (Our real flowers will probably be ordered from Costco next April.)

IMG_3226 Cleaned them up a bit – no leaves. No little pokey leaves around the petals. No dead petals.

IMG_3228 Stuck them in water to sit over night. This was a bit of a test. I am planning on having the flowers delivered on Thursday. I'll clean them up that day. Then Friday morning I will "prep" and bundle them. Saturday morning, the day of the wedding, I will just have to wrap the ribbons around them. (I know, I KNOW, I'll be busy on Saturday. But this is how I want to do it. Paul will still marry me even if my flowers fall apart. And my bridesmaids are a talented bunch and will help me out if I promise champagne.)

IMG_3246 My tools are pretty simple. My bouquet will have about 20 roses + 2 fake poppies. The bridesmaids will have about 15. I bought inexpensive floral wire at Michael's. The ribbon is May Arts and the green springs came off the plants we have in the backyard.

IMG_3247 I have no skills besides a positive attitude when it comes to the flowers. I hold the stems loosely in my left hand and add a rose at a time until the bouquet looks full and even. It helps to stand in front of a mirror and look at it as you add. I wound a lot of wire tightly to hold it together.

IMG_3249
IMG_3250
I started at the base of the flowers and wrapped the ribbon all the way down and then wrapped it back up. To hold it in place I used small sewing pins. The real bouquets will have matching pins but these did the job. If the pins go directly into the stems it holds really well. The real bouquets will also have more green leaf sprigs but it was dark when I started this project and that made picking greenery difficult.

I did all my own flowers at my wedding (bridal party, centerpieces, bouts)–and it worked out GREAT! I used about 35-40 roses in my bouquet and they were at the perfect amount of “openness” for the ceremony and reception and then basically right after that all of their petals fell off. 🙂 I wanted the HUGE garden rose look–and that’s what I got.
You can do it…it really wasn’t that bad…it was fun, too!

    perfection!
I’ve seen this done (Martha, I think) where you bundle the stems, secure them, and THEN cut them all together after they’re bunched (does that make sense?) with strong scissors or trimmers. That gives the clean sharp uniform stem length.
I did my own flowers too.

love love love simple bouquets! we used ours this past march to add a pop of color as well, and it was fabulous (although i crocheted all the flowers in mine – in retrospect, something like this would have been MUCH easier and just as gorgeous).

I am also doing my own flowers, but I have the lucky bonus that my aunt used to be a florist. What she showed me is to wrap the floral wire around each individual stem to give it support (I’m using gerberas, though, which tend to fall over) and then use floral tape, which you can find at hobby lobby, wrapped tightly around the stems to hold it all in. You stretch it out as you go and wrap it tight, overlapping it, & it sticks to itself. Then cover the tape with the ribbon. That’s what I learned; use it if it helps you! 🙂 Your flowers do look so pretty and I looove the ribbon.

I love the flowers elise! my tip would be to go and talk to a local florist and ask about refrigeration. might give the flowers a bit more time. I know that there is flower preserve stuff too. basically take what you made and test as you said. I dare you to carry it with you during your ordinary day! oh the thoughts! why is that woman carrying around a bouquet? where is the groom? btw love the shoes too! wish I was attending just so I could give you a big long hug, but I will do that through the computer. ciao!

oh man! I should totally carry them around for a day… that would be hilarious and shed some light on how they’ll hold up.
Thanks for the shoe compliment…it would be fun to have ALL of blogland at the wedding. impractical though…

will totally look into floral tape. I don’t have the patience to wire each rose but you’re right…they are a little sturdier than gerberas.
    Have fun with your flowers!

Ditto the suggestion to go to a florist. I worked in one in high school and they have all kinds of cool tricks. See if they’ll let you check out the tool they use to strip the leaves off easily (it looks kind of like a staple remover if I remember correctly). Will get the stems clean much more quickly than scissors.
P.S. I owe you photos for a journal! I’ve been collecting them, but just haven’t been satisfied with the mix yet. I hope that hasn’t been too inconvenient for you to have that order hanging around. I’ll get them too you as soon as possible!

Your “can do” attitude along with your “imperfect is good” mind set are so AWESOME! The bouquet looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing your Wedding Wednesdays. There are SO many things I’d do differently about mine if I could have a do-over. (19 yrs ago).

simply stunning. nicely done, miss elise. my bff did the cutest thing for her bouquet. she rolled up a letter that her love had written to her and pinned it to the ribbon wrapped stems. i absolutely loved the idea of holding his words down the aisle.

You’ll be fine wrapping the bouquets on Saturday. We did our own flowers, and it wasn’t an issue. I’ve been in several weddings where we (the BMs) did our individual bouquets on our own as the bride was getting ready. It was a lot of fun.

Ditto the use floral tape comment. I did all the bouquets for my friend’s wedding (very similiar to your arrangements but with Gerber daisies). First, I bundled the flowers into smaller bunches of 3-5 stems each, then I wired them, then I bundled the smaller bunches together. That really allowed me more control. After all that, I wrapped the entire thing in floral tape – that helps to elminate those bumps that are showing (and feel weird) through the ribbon.
Then, just wrap the ribbon and finish with a pin (the floral tape wrap also helps the ribbon and pins stay in place better).
Personally, I am a huge fan of homemade and slightly imperfect…your bouquet looks great!

I was just going to suggest floral tape to hold the stem bundle together. I just did my own wedding flowers a few weeks ago, bouquets and all, and it was a lot of fun. Don’t be afraid of it, wrapping the bouquets turned out to be the easy part! You’re right on about flowers being pretty themselves, especially if arranged casually…

You are fearless! The bouquest is awesome and you have it all in perspective…yes, Paul will still marry you if your flowers aren’t perfect! 🙂 My cousin had a wrapped stem bouquet like that and she added a nice old brooch of her grandmother’s to the front; it was very plain, sentimental and sweet. Looks like everything is coming together nicely! Nice job…

Make sure they give you mostly closed flowers that are hard or firm to squeeze. That way in your warm house they will open up and be at that perfect stageand not falling apart. Keep them as cold as possible w/out freezing and they will open slower. The color is fantastic!! Costco’s flowers are usually awesome!

Nicely done! I don’t know if this has been mentioned or not, but the key to how open your roses get is in the water. The warmer the water, the faster they open. Also, trim the stem every time you take them out of the water. They will seal up tight after about 30 seconds and not want to soak up any water anymore.
