enJOY it

an archived personal and craft blog from Elise Blaha Cripe.

A few weeks ago, I got it in my head that I needed to take a trip to New York. I decided I was out of ideas and New York would be a good place to find a few. Paul got home from work and I asked if he was in. He was. We leave Thursday. Paul wants to be sure we get New York pizza. And he is also hoping for donuts. I want to take 500 photos and visit fun shops.

IMG_1278 IMG_1277 Last night, I made an small album to bring with on the trip. It is 100% Jamaica inspired. You can see the tutorial she made on creating these little guys on Ali's blog. My book looks a bit different because I didn't read the directions – but I feel like this is already a new favorite. Such a cool technique, Jamaica.
IMG_1280 To make the paper for the cover, I typed "NYC" repeatedly and printed it out on white cardstock. I added a few "NYC" pages on the inside the book as well.
IMG_1279 IMG_1282 IMG_1283 IMG_1284 IMG_1285 IMG_1286 IMG_1287 IMG_1288 IMG_1289 The remaining book pages are Hambly overlays, white cardstock, regular transparencies and a few pieces of chipboard that I painted black and punched a square hole in.

Ideally, this book will fill up with journaling and paper souvenirs while we are there this weekend. After we get home, I will have my photos printed 4×6 – punch some holes and add them to the book as well.

IMG_1291 For "on the road" supplies I will be bringing a holepunch, a black American Crafts slickwriter, a white Sharpie paint pen, StazOn ink, a date stamp and a tape runner. Plus a mini stapler that I still need to buy.

++

You can see a previous album on the road from our trip to Kauai here.

Tomorrow I am going to do a BIG POST on my collection of mini books. I will also be answering a lot of frequent mini book questions. If there is anything you would like to know – please ask it in the comments so I can put it in tomorrow's post.

My question probably has an obvious answer but I am new to minis. How do you get the holes you punch to line up perfectly. It might just be that I don’t have a very good hole punch but I am guessing there might be more to it than that. My holes I have punched never seem to sit just right.

Thanks for all your inspiration! I made my sister a travel journal inspired by you, and everyone really loved it. This post came just in the right time too, since I was JUST about to get online and look for book binding techniques, which I could also add hinged rings to! Perfect.

Ditto on the storage question. I love your pictures of all or several of them together, but I’d love to see a picture on how you store them.
Great NYC book by the way.

http://www.difara.com/ Go there for pizza! It is off the beaten path but delicous pizza and a Subway ride away – cool experience too with the same Italian owner for 50 years. If you search it on the web it might say 45 minute wait but there were only a few others there when we went last summer in the afternoon.

LOVE the urban feel of this mini book!
And you already have my question about your pre-made books: how do I know what will fit where, or if I’ll have anything at all that “fits”?
I’ve been doing some thinking and I think I’ve worked through some glitches so I think I’m going to make myself a mini book for my July 19th cruise and limit my supplies to what you showed up above: black pen, white pen, mini scissors, stapler, adhesive, ink and a date stamp. I have a teeny bit of shopping to do…

    questions RE: minis
-are your current minis (24, summer) all 4×6 size ? i guess they just look a bigger in the pics.
-where did you get that green (and also in red) checkered box paper (used in your 24 & adventure mini) ? i love it !
-i’m new to chipboard (as well as Hambly screen prints), how can you use it and do you typically use it?
    thanks again.

This is so absolutely amazing! I love your mini books, they’re like the highlight of my day. I’m making one ispired from your “She” one right now. My question is how you can choose such amazing paper? I always go looking for pretty paper, but I can never find any that isn’t overcolorful and attacked with glitter. I love the paper you use, its so simple but it still has a design. Thanks!!

Elise, you’re such an inspiration. I was wondering how your mini making flows? Do you sit down and throw them together and just get it done? Is it more deliberate and detailed? I plan to make minis but get thrown off without a printer and lose inspiration before I get my photos printed. Do you have any tipsfor this? I notice you made this mini in advance.
Have a great trip and thank you for inspiration

Do you have like an actual scrapbook that you add regular pages to? Or do you just do mini books for individual trips and events? I want to scrap book, but it’s almost like I don’t know where to start.. should I make a small album.. or a big one with just pages of adventures.. I’m so lost…

I love your mini books! Such great ideas. I have a trip coming up to Seattle in Aug and I cant wait to make my own and bring it along. When I went to Europe a couple years ago a created a travel journal and actually wrote in it most days. I have forgot how fun and handy they can be. Have a wonderful trip I love it in NYC!

I love your blog… did I ever tell you that? lol My question is… How do you finish a whole mini book!? lol I have about 6 mini’s at home that I have made the book for, decorated the cover, and made the first page or two… then it gets thrown in a bin and never touched again. It makes me sad because I get so excited to start them but by the time I get to the part that SHOULD be the good part, I fail miserably lol Maybe I should just stick to scrapbook layouts haha
