enJOY it

I do not believe in Blog Categories. But if I did, this post would be filed under "Things I did not know I was terrified of until today."

I walked out of the apartment today at 8:25 and saw SNOW. Not like "Oh, cute, a snowflake" snow, but "I could be on a ski lift in Tahoe right now" snow. I paused for a moment, and then went back to get my camera. And while getting my camera I realized I was going to need something to clear the snow off my car and drive to the metro station. (Babe, I took a towel from the bathroom.) So then, I walked back outside, and slipped on the ice. Not a "fall over" slip, but an "enough to get me nervous" slip. I cleared off the car and proceeded to back out. I could already hear my anti-lock breaks churning. Not a good sign.

After I got down the parking ramp and on to real streets, things were better. My license plate still says California so most other cars gave me a good half mile following distance. Unfortunately, I had to park on the top floor at the metro. Unlike other seasoned Maryland metro riders, I did not realize you LEAVE EARLY on snow days. I am terrified to see what my car will look like in 13 hours when I get back to it. I am hoping to pick up an ice scraper, some serious snow boots and ear muffs in Georgetown.

Happy Winter! Be SAFE.

PS. As I was operating in Survival Mode, I was not able to get any photos.

    Welcome to Winter : )
Don’t worry it gets easier as does the commuting and you will be thrilled with all the cute snow pictures you get to take.

YAY SNOW! I love SNOW! I love SNOW! YOu will want to trade your VW in for a JEEP. I am unstoppable in the snow. It’s radical. It’s a rush. You will learn to think of it affectionately. Get a snow brush straight away!
    Whooo HOoo SNow!

snow is really only fun when you don’t have anywhere to go, or if you are skiing. since you are forced to go out – be safe and treat yourself to a latte. 🙂

yes, welcome to winter wonderland! this was a cute post. and this is what snow is all about. leaving early, waiting for the ice to defrost from the windshield (a good time to eat your oatmeal or throw on some mascara). and slip slidin’ away is inevitable. it’s gorgeous, sure.. but makes everything a bit more difficult. {like walking (skating) on icy sidewalks carrying a load of laundry = clean clothes all over the wet ground. unhappy me.
get good, warm shoes and a nice cheap scarf (it works wonders if you misplace your scraper). shift down when driving in snow too. drive slow. be safe. and when it’s really blizzard-y, turn your lights on. go home, bundle up. be safe. take photos from indoors.

Oh wow!! We don’t get snow here often (i’m in Oklahoma) but when we do people act like they’re crazy.. so PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!
Also one word of wisdom my mom (who drove in Oregon snow where she had to put chains on her tires!!) gave me:
“When driving in snow pretend you don’t have brakes.”
Basically your breaks aren’t going to get you anywhere and if you slam on them you’ll probably slide into something… so just give yourself enough distance that if you need to stop… you can just let off the gas and lightly press the brakes. 🙂 Be safe!!
And it may be a good idea to google snow driving tips… I know when we get snow every year the news always has a special on how to drive in it. Good luck!

Oh .. and something else we do here too when it snows (Sorry to clog up your comments with unsolicited advice)
Take a sun visor (can be bought for like $1)or cardboard and put it over your windshield and put your wiper blades over it… practically eliminates having to scrape your front window!

You left the warmth of California and went to really snowy winters. I left the snowy winters of Ohio and went to strangely warm California. I guess we’re both experiencing new and different things. 🙂 Glad you made it to work without an accident and hope you’re not too sore from your fall.

ooooo man. That’s what my mom always warned me about! she said snow is NOT cute Heath, its not fun to play in and make snow balls and go snowboarding…. THAT is only on one day… the REST of the days… its HELL! (She refused to ever leave Southern California)… I still think I could handle it, I still think it’d be fun.
I think you can handle it even more. Snow on Elise Blaha, snow on! 🙂

I remember the first time I saw snow after moving out of Miami. It scared the hell out of me. Be careful…
That said…I wish it snowed like that here in the ATL. All we get is one or two flakes and suddenly all beer, bread, milk, and eggs are gone from the grocery
