enJOY it

an archived personal and craft blog from Elise Blaha Cripe.

Kite_runnerIt took me over a year and a half to read The Kite Runner. Jenny was reading it when we got back to school second semester Junior year. She said I would like it.

I looked at the cover and thought "eh."

Katy read it. And lent me her copy. I think I started it. But then I put it back on the shelf and eventually returned it to her. Unread.

And then Vern read it. And Paul read it.

Everyone on goodreads read it.

I started it again. And got sidetracked. I read Harry Potter. I read easy chick lit books. For some reason, I did not want to have to deal with the heaviness that I knew this book would bring.

I wanted to be entertained.

This weekend, when I flew down to San Diego, I dug in. I read past the hard and painful parts and finally let myself get in deeper. I let myself be uncomfortable.

In the end I was not just entertained, but enlightened.

It was so very good. So very worth the struggle.

It took me 2 days to read it. And I NEVER ready ANYTHING in 2 days. So, so heavy. But so, so good.

i had a similar exp. with Peace Like A River – i started, stopped, almost sold it in a yard sale, picked it up a couple years later, read it and now it is my favorite book.

I didn’t like it at all. So much kitch that I found myself rolling my eyes. Especially at the end. It started out very interesting, but the end was just too “give me a break” kind of – for me.
And I just got my new Scrapbooks Etc. and saw your LO! Wonderful one! 🙂
Btw, I did read Eat, Pray Love (have I alraedy commented on this???), and I LOVE that book.

I felt the same way about this book- until I had to read it for class. I broke my heart- but yes I came out a bit enlightened as well.

Good for you darling! I think being enlightened is better than entertainment at times (but we do need fun, too). Will add that to my “to read” list : )

And wait until you read his new book, A thousand splendid suns… I read it in a day, and cried so much, it is a heavy book, but one can never imagine the oppression this women live under. And I loved Eat, Pray, Love..

He has a new book out, can’t remember the name right now. And if you listen to NPR I think he was on one of the shows today, maybe Fresh Air?
And thanks for the review, it’s been on my kindofsortalooksintrestingmaybeillgetitonday list. 😉
