Whenever I think to myself, "This is it. I am out of creative energy. I will never again come up with an interesting blog entry. I will never be able to make paper and glue look like anything besides sticky paper. I should just quit now" I remember that in 1899, the US Commissioner of Patents, Charles H. Duell, declared that everything that could be invented had been invented. It was time to close the patent office.
Seriously.
Okay. Not seriously. I just googled to get the name of the poor crazy soul and found out that the story is probably just an Urban Myth.
So the US Patent Man did not make that announcement. But the very idea of it makes me laugh. What if we did not have the iPhone? or gmail? or toasters? or Chi hair straighteners? WHAT WOULD WE DO? Obviously, celebrating the independence of America would still be important, but probably not as fun.
So thank goodness the patent office stayed open. And people kept imagining. And useful and/or entertaining tools continued to be invented.
Someday, I will return to the waterfall of inspiration. And on that day, I will laugh at the fact that at one time I thought it was time to throw in the ribbon.
