Finished reading Smashed by Koren Zailckas last night. It is not the type of book that you recommend to your friends. More the type that you recommend to your enemies. It is about female binge drinking. And it scared me. Not because what the author went through was so intense (and it was) but because it really did not seem that out of place to me. Because the situations she was describing are similar to what I see all the time. Because what she is saying is common enough that it could not shock me. And I was supposed to be shocked.
I stopped and started the book a few times. Although it did not shock, it was heavy and reflective. It made me consider my own alcohol use. Or abuse sometimes. It helped me to clarify that while I am definitely on the fun side of the alcohol line, it is possible to slip to the other side – the negative side.
At the end of the day, I know it is about being aware. Aware of self. Aware of others. It is about being able to make good choices and recognize when I make wrong ones.
Simple stuff. But important to remember.
