urban outfitters woven rug, vilas dresser, liz lange for target maternity dress, quality montessori baby rattle, merrell barefoot running shoes, the marion house book DIY painted baskets.

I've got awhile until I am running again, but the itch is back in big way and I'm going to consider that a good thing. Those running shoes are going to be my first post-baby purchase. That black maxi dress is considered a beach cover-up, but I've worn it to two big events in the past few weeks and LOVE it. Super flattering and great price. I think it will work post-pregnancy too. And that dresser… I think I'm going to hold off, but I'm a fan. Also, do I have time to paint 100 baskets before the baby comes? Because that's a killer DIY.

    Happy May.

  • Dayinthelife1

I've been watching Ali document a "day in the life" at the end of every month this year. She's keeping it simple and her photos and layouts (which she works into her Project Life album) have been inspiring to me. The once a month plan didn't really work for me, but I decided to do it three times in 2013. Last Tuesday, April 30th, was the first. I'll do it again at the end of August and then towards the end of December. Obviously, my days will change a lot in the months in between and I love that I'll have a record of them in such a monumental year.

    Dayinthelife2

I took 21 photos this time around. All with my iPhone, all cropped into a square and posted to Instagram without a filter. For journaling, I just noted the time and a simple explanation of what I was doing. I used the TimerCam app to get the photos where you see me in the frame.

    Dayinthelife3

My takeaway from this project is always the same. I love everyday photos. So much more than any other type. I love playing with my camera and finding new angles and techniques to elevate these everyday photos. I also always remember how much I love routine. (And yep, I'm on board for the major routine shift that will happen with the addition of a little one.)

    Dayinthelife4

This time around though, while taking a bunch of random photos in my house, I was also reminded of the William Morris quote, "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." This quote has popped into my head many times since we moved into this new place. It's there as I contemplate what to get rid of. It's there as I rearrange furniture to make it work for us. It's there as I decide what baby equipment we actually need. It's there as Paul and I weigh pros and cons of huge furniture purchases. Photographing my space and the life I live within it always gets me thinking.

I assume that in ten years, I'll be interested in remembering the details of this time in my life. But what I am always pleasantly surprised by is how much this project means to me in the present.

Related : my tips for taking interesting everyday photos & my tips for taking self-portraits.

*I will be working these photos and minor journaling into a one-page insert in my Project Life album. Look for that in Sunday's update post.

  • INDOORplanttips

I've had a few requests to share my tips for raising house plants. At this very moment I have 31 plants in my house. 28 of which are thriving. (One I really need to throw out, the other is a totally dead airplant, and the third I am not sure if it's going to make a comeback or not.) I have killed a lot of plants in the past but so far things are going pretty well in this new space.

Just like everything else I blog about ever, I am not an expert in raising indoor plants. But this is what I have learned that has worked for me.

    Planter-progress

Provide proper drainage. Your pot with soil in it must have drainage holes to prevent over-watering and root rotting. No matter how cute your planting vessel is, it's not worth using unless there are holes in the bottom.

    DIYplantstand

I love terracotta pots because they are super cheap, look good and have a drainage hole. I repot store bought plants right into them.

    DIY-ikea-hack-media-cabinet

But I also have some cute baskets and pots (two shown above) that I would like to use for plants that don't have drainage. In these cases, I just add the plants in their store-bought container (which should have come with drainage holes) directly into the cute vessel. Now the water can get out & the pot looks cute.

    Plants1

Don't repot into something bigger too soon. Surely there is a scientific reason for why taking a small plant and putting it into a huge pot doesn't work, but I don't know it. All I know is that if I move a new plant into something too big before it's started to overgrow it's space it usually dies. I have kept some plants in their original vessel for over two years before re-potting. The good news is that once I actually do repot after two years, they usually thrive in the extra space. As a side note here – I have had MUCH greater success keeping my larger plants alive than my small ones. I think they are heartier and can take more trial and error than the little guys. Keep this in mind if you are just starting your collection.

    Plants5

Do your research & read their instructions. This is a great article about what sort of house plants can stand neglect. When we first moved here, I found this article and wrote down all the plants and then carried it in my wallet. When you buy a plant, it usually comes with a little card that tells you it's water and light preference. It might not be the exact recipe for your plant, but read it and use it as a helpful guideline! I recently ordered a handful of airplants from etsy and they came with a care card that instructed me to give them a bath once a week for about ten minutes and then allow them to dry upside down so all the water gets out of the center and doesn't cause rot. I assume the etsy seller is more of an expert than me, so I am following her advice and so far, so good.

    Plants4

Follow their cues. I have found that my plants usually tell me when they need water by getting droopy and sad looking. Usually I feel their soil after I notice and it's dry, dry, dry. So in goes some water, usually directly from my current water glass and never measured out. The good thing about drainage holes is the extra water can run out if need be (keep an eye on it though – it's not good to allow your plants to sit in standing water for too long). I keep an eye on the plant for the next day or so to be sure it was enough to perk it up and usually we're good to go.

    Plants3

When in doubt, don't water. Perhaps a dumb tip, but I am pretty sure I have killed more indoor plants from OVER-watering than under-watering. Don't just set a schedule for yourself and water everything once a week. That might be too much. If you notice that the leaves on your plant are turning yellow this might mean you are over-watering.

    Aroundhere5

Trim away the dead. Your totally healthy plant is still going to have some dead bits. Leaves will go through the full life-cycle. I love watching the new growth spiral up and the leaves open and then I love trimming off the dead leaves as they go. Trimming away the dead (anything that is brown or dried up) will provide more room for the new stuff to flourish. I have noticed about a week after I give my bigger plants a good trim there is usually tons of new growth.

    Three-plants

Prepare to lose a few. It's part of the game. (At least for me.) Yes, it's sad when your plant dies – it's money down the drain, but indoor plants last longer and are much cheaper than fresh flowers. Don't worry too much if your plant dies. Instead, replace it with a different variety and see if you have better luck with something new.

    Plants2

Don't give up. When I got home from a week away in March, my favorite big plant was looking AWFUL. The house had been super warm while I was gone and obviously, no one had watered it. Every single leaf was laying down completely and many were dead. I immediately dumped a cup of water into the center and hoped for the best. The next morning the leaves were halfway up. I dumped in another water glass and left it alone. A few days later I trimmed away the dead and today, about a month later, it looks like what you see above. Plants are RAD like that.

Anything special in the spread? I used a card from the digital edition of the Midnight Project Life kit. LOVE that edition and think this card especially is fun (I recolored it from gray to yellow in PSE). Love the popular speech bubble shape – used it twice this week.

    Plwk17detail

Techniques this week : Nothing special. Loving the look of the white stickers on photos. These are from Kelly Purkey.

    Plwk17right

Overall thoughts : This is the last spread of album one! I am carrying April 29th and 30th into May-August’s album. Safe to say I am still enjoying this project more in 2013 than I was in 2012.

What happened this week? I was home with not too much going on for the week and then the weekend was busy with an event in LA, my baby shower and Disneyland with Paul's family.

    Plwk16insert

Anything special in the spread? A baby shower insert. Two actually. The first is a 5×7 pocket page that holds the handmade invite.

    Plwk16insert2

The second is a trimmed down Design D pocket page that I used to hold 3 4×6 photos, a journaling card from the baby kit and 8 3×4 photos. I kept the insert SUPER simple and just focused on fun photos from the party.

    Plwk16detail

Techniques this week : Machine-stiching on more than a few cards. I also stapled some sequins on to the extra white space in that baby belly photo.

    Plwk16right

Overall thoughts : Moving right along. I had to go back this week to make this spread and as always, playing catch-up is overwhelming to me. I am always so glad when I get it done though.

Summer books and a few new stamps are now listed in the shop! Get them now if you're interested. I will be closing shop at the end of May for my maternity leave. Not sure yet when things will re-open, but my guess is mid-August.

Rough start this week, but solid finish. We finally bought a dining table. We've been debating pros and cons about this purchase for over two months. We were settled on one, and then at the last second, went with something completely different. This was the last BIG purchase (except dining chairs!) that I was hoping to make before the baby arrived. Once it gets here, and a few final adjustments are made, I think I'll call the decorating suspended while we soak up every second of summer and the newborn phase. (Summer and a newborn baby!?! My two favorite things combined!) Looking forward to sharing the big picture of how this house has shaped up at the end of the month. Spoiler alert : I love where it's headed.

I am off to a wedding in Scottsdale, Arizona this weekend. My last pre-baby adventure. A solo babymoon, if you will. I'm going to be a 34.5 week pregnant bridesmaid and thanks to an alterations miracle, my dress fits. So looking forward to seeing my college girlfriends and soaking up some sunshine.

    Have a great weekend.

  • Makingmehappymay

I spent the beginning of the week in funk. Like a normal funk, it was totally exhausting and frustrating. Unlike a normal funk, I knew exactly what the issue was. I miss Paul. And that is an understatement. I physically hurt for Paul. Before deployments entered our lives, I am not sure I fully understood the word yearn. After one and half, I absolutely do. It's hard because there is nothing to be done. I can't get Paul here any earlier. I can't get to him. We. Just. Have. To. Wait.

    And so we wait.

And in the meantime, I focus on the good. These five things are making me happy right now.

    View

This exact view. Home ownership is thrilling me so much more than I expected. I really thought it would be a lot like renting except for more upfront cost, more space, the ability to knock down walls and no one to call when the oven breaks. But I was wrong. This is so much different than renting and I am surprised to realize I have so much pride in it. I am obsessed with this house. With getting it right for us. With appreciating it's beauty and quirks. With keeping it clean. I marvel and feel grateful every single day that we took the plunge. I cannot wait for Paul to come home and feel what it's like to live here and make this place more ours.

    Artneartv
Orange & Park California print, pinwheel painting, ampersand string art, Paris print, siiso print. frames by ikea, target & pottery barn.

Art over the TV. I hemmed and hawed for two weeks before committing. And once I did, it took more than a few nail holes and shuffling to get it right. But I love the look now. I love that every day a little bit more work gets done. I was talking to Paul the other day about my five step plan for moving all the bookcases in this house to make better use of them and was lamenting a bit that I have to wait for visitors to put my zillion furniture moving ideas into action. The little things (like hanging art and adding plants) that I can accomplish and adjust alone are downright thrilling.

    Cheapart

Cheap art. My new TV art wall needed something else. That something turned out to be an Ikea Ribba frame that I had on hand and a piece of black cardstock with white letter stickers. Most likely this will be changed out in a few months, but right now, it's my favorite.

    Tomatoes

So many tomatoes. I don't know what the deal is. Is it the San Diego weather? Is it that I planted earlier? Is it that I picked more varieties? Is it that Mother Nature knew I needed a gardening win this spring? Regardless, I am so happy to have tomatoes on almost all of my plants. I ate my first red one Sunday night and it tasted like magic the way only food grown in your backyard can. I am so excited about this little garden. But I am also so excited about what it represents – four more springs and summers in this very same house. Next year we'll go big with planter boxes. Two years from now, I'll have a toddler helping me water our veggies. Three years from now I might be pregnant again with our second child. Four years from now there could be four of us eating from our family garden.

    Babykicks

Kicks from my little lady. She's the most active tiny person in the world, I am sure of it. I remember in January waiting and waiting for those kicks. Was that one? Was that?! I was on high alert, hopeful to catch her first movements. Now, they are so frequent and strong they keep me up at night but are still never, ever taken for granted. This girl and her constant rolling entertain and comfort me. As mentioned a million times, it's so hard to be pregnant without Paul. But a quick jab from her and I am reminded that this, this moment, this place, this time, this story is exactly right. We are writing it together the only way we know how.

  • MAYboldintentions

April blew February and March out of the water. My bold intentions for the month were set and almost met. The bedroom still needs some work, but it will get there. We are closer to having a welcoming space which is the goal. And the baby girl has everything she "needs" for those first few months. This month we'll get the carseat installed, everything washed, the bassinet set up in our bedroom and we'll officially be good to go.

But really though, April. Thank you. I needed you. I hit my stride with the GDM diet and this pregnancy in general. This house feels more like a home thanks to help from my parents and rad in-laws. I have a date and time written in Sharpie in my calendar for when Paul's flight will land in San Diego. It's strange how a month of no chaos or surprises after weeks of nothing but can feel like real live magic.

I had a harder time coming up with action items to focus on this month. May feels like the cusp. It's the end of the beginning (my pre-motherhood days) but at the same time, we're not quite there yet. So goal-setting feels odd. How can I pick three things to appropriately celebrate this time in my life?

Here's what I came up with, so anti-climatic, but sometimes that's okay.

    1. continue the daily walks…always.
    2. take more photos.
    3. wrap up all projects.
    4. make my bed everyday. (bonus item : I hoping to establish a habit.)

I want to enter June energized and without much on my plate except preparing my body and mind to welcome this baby girl into our lives.

    Here we go, May.

    Dottedline

And a warm welcome to some returning sponsors and new faces on the right sidebar this month. Thank you for reading and for supporting this blog.
