around here : I am excited to be participating in the Your Story Retreat in March. 2014 is going to be about growth and going all in. I am so very excited about this learning & teaching opportunity.

around here : the office clear out quest continues. We have the floor guys coming next week which means this weekend we'll be getting all the furniture moved out.

    Salegrabbag

around here : I listed about sixty "grab-bag" envelopes in the shop this week. They are stuffed with papers and other odds and ends from the last six years of collecting scraps and doing business. Some of these are a walk down memory lane… there are old kit pieces, minibook covers, bits of letterpress and more tucked in those envelopes. No two are the same but all are equally "good." If you're the sort of person that likes mystery grab bags, you'll love these. Shop them here until they're gone. SOLD OUT. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

around here : we're looking forward to relaxing this weekend. Paul has three days off and this is the first time in a long time we don't have people coming to visit or places to be. I imagine there will be pancakes.

Have a good one (and Happy 60th Birthday, Dad!).

    Tvart

Since we built the new media stand, I've been very slowly adding to the art around the TV. This wall is the one I look at most frequently (that's sad, but true) so it's been considered probably more than any other space in the house.

    Tvart6

Instead of just filling it in all in one day, I've added a little bit here and a little bit there over the past few months. Each time something new goes up, it takes me awhile to decide if I really like it. Too often, I'll pause whatever Paul and I are watching, get the hammer and shuffle things around. (I am a real joy to watch TV with.)

    Tvart4

I have it at a point now where I am pretty pleased, though I am not sure if that Love Bird print or the metal C is quite right for the space. They are currently keeping the balance though, so for now they stay.

    Tvart2

The art in the square frame is by Creative Thursday and it's my newest purchase. I'm a fan of how this square works with the big California print.

    Tvart3

The photo of the beach was taken by Paul last spring in Spain. He didn't think anything of it, but I loved it – probably because it reminds me of the gorgeous photography of Christian Chaize. (We have one of his prints hanging in the hall.)

    Fullwallsources

It's not finished, I am not sure it will ever be finished, but it's starting to feel "full."

Sources : Creative Thursday sunset print, Urban Outfitters metal C (similar here), Love Bird framed card (purchased right before Paul and I moved in together..SIX years ago), personal photograph, Tara Whitney photo of Paul and Ellerie, DeadBuryDead print, DIY silhouette wall hangings, DIY yes art, Orange & Park California print, pinwheel painting, Paris print, ampersand string art, siiso print. frames by ikea, target & pottery barn.

  • Run2

When I was thirteen, I babysat a ton. Mostly for young kids, but occasionally for toddlers and for one summer, a newborn. The mom hired me to come to her house three mornings a week and watch her brand new baby for just an hour while she went to the gym. At thirteen, I didn't get it. I was thrilled to hold a tiny baby while he slept, but it seemed silly for her to pay me just so she could exercise.

Fast-forward 15 years and OH MAN, do I understand.

I did not think at all about how hard it would be to exercise once the baby arrived. First there was the necessary healing time which needed to be respected, of course. And then there was the lack of energy. And then there's the fact that you can't just leave the kiddo at home while you race around the neighborhood. And, of course, there are feeding and nap schedules to try to coordinate.

I really missed moving in the early weeks. I remember towards the end of my pregnancy having dreams about running and I was anxious to get get back to it. On Ellerie's six week birthday, after Paul got home from work, I went for my first run since December 31st. It was very slow and a bit jiggly. But it was a great run. I made a short one mile loop and felt my mind un-fog as my feet hit the pavement. It was a healthy reminder that I run not to fit into my jeans, but to have some time to myself and get my heart pumping fast.

    Run

Since that run, I have worked very hard to fit movement into our schedule. I say "our" because it's a family effort, for sure. Paul and I take turns getting in a quick run after he gets home from work. Typically, I am dressed and ready to go with a podcast queued when he walks in the door and then when I get home, he gets out. Ellerie is big enough now to be pushed in the stroller while one of us jogs behind so that will make things easier for sure.

We have made a point to get out running together a few times when we have family here to watch the baby and I cherish those mornings. We used to run a lot with each other and having some of our old "Elise & Paul" time is special and awesome. Plus, Paul's a great motivator. I run faster and for longer when he's by my side. We had planned on participating in a 10k last weekend, but sadly, it was canceled. Hopefully we can find another one soon.

    Yoga

I also found a yoga class that I love that's not too far from the house. Getting the hour of stretching and strengthening in is nice, but connecting briefly with other mamas and the fantastic teacher is wonderful. It's a baby friendly class, which means Ellerie lays on the floor in front of the mat and I can stop at any time to feed her, comfort her, etc. The practice is often disrupted, but it's still more involved than something I would be doing at home.

    Yoga2

It's so worth it to me to get out of the house and commit to this each week – even when it means I alter Ellerie's nap "schedule" and have to drive around looking for street parking. Like nearly all exercise, I never regret going after class is over.

    Walk

We're learning daily how to make things work as parents and people. Everything now takes more planning and sometimes more effort than it did before. But we're working on it and finding it gets easier as we settle into our groove.

    Run

The clothes I am wearing in this post were provided by Albion Fit. They offered to send me a few items in exchange for sharing here and I thought this would be a great fit (no pun intended). I have been wearing the breathe freely tank on my runs and I love it because unlike so many of my running shirts, it's loose and doesn't ride up. The lounge crops and illusion capris are both flattering and have become favorites for yoga classes or around the house wear. Albion Fit is generously offering $20 off any $50 or more purchase with code enjoyit20 through 11/9/13.

ps. ellerie's romper is baby gap and these are similar to my running shoes. you can see all my posts about running here.

Last weekend I participated in the Queen Bee Market. This was my third time as a vendor and my favorite experience so far. The event was packed both days from open to close and people seemed to be buying – not just looking – which is so awesome to see. (Hooray, handmade!)

    Queen-Bee-Market-November-2013-PROOFS-0006

I love the creative aspect of making and selling but I also equally enjoy the business side. Business is my background and watching people shop is fascinating to me. I love to see the trends (ampersands were everywhere) and what seems to fly off the shelves (this market it was big painted wooden signs and marquee lighting).

    Queen-Bee-Market-November-2013-PROOFS-0080

I spend a lot of time thinking about my business when surrounded by so many other small businesses. I think about what I can change. I think about what needs to stay the same. I think about where I want to take my shop and how I can simplify to make things better. It's inspiring to see handmade thriving.

    Queen-Bee-Market-November-2013-PROOFS-0082

And of course, it's also fun to be able to meet blog readers in real life and connect with other vendors. It was clear to me that Instagram is taking over though – I overheard "What's your Instagram name?" or "I follow you on Instagram" way more than I heard "Do you have a blog?" or "I read your blog." It's interesting to realize that one photo on Instagram may be a much better marketing tool than a long explanatory blog post. And it's also so clear that very soon having a mobile-ready shop will be absolutely necessary to do business.

Seriously… so much to think about when I ask myself the question "What's next?!" I never dreamed my pop-up stamp shop would grow into what it has (nearly 5,000 stamps sold!). I never imagined my random posts would develop into a career. I am so happy and grateful to be working on my craft daily.

    Office

I'm deep in the process of clearing out the office so that the new floors can be laid and new storage and workspaces can come in. This change is desperately needed but the trouble is, work doesn't exactly stop while I move things around. It's going to be a bit of challenge to keep everything humming, but it will be so worth to start fresh in this new space. Since deadlines tend to be my friend, my goal is to have it set to go by December 1…I'll be sure to keep you posted.

So while the office is in shambles, here are some a few links to rad things I have seen on the always well-organized Internet…

I picked up this wooden camera for Ellerie at the queen bee market (so fun, btw!) and it should be appearing in this etsy shop soon.

In case you're looking for a new book to read. (I was surprised to see I'd read 15 of the 32.)

These color palettes are so interesting. Without a doubt I'd pick warm, cool, soft & cool.

I've recently spent too much time searching for "chunky yarn" on etsy.

It's early, I know, but I love these DIY felt ornaments.

Maybe I'll get to make these for a party someday.

This bread will be made the next time I'm feeling ambitious in the kitchen.

Every time I stick Ellerie in this onesie I remember I need to blog a link.

This has made the rounds many times, but stand up job, West Elm.

    Gorgeous photos of the morning.

Did you see Kal's courage temporary tattoos are back in stock?

This embroidery, yes embroidery, is thrilling to me.

I invested in two of these for the office and am relived to have some of the paper piles sorted.

There is much to be thankful for this first day of November.

Thank you for your podcast comments and suggestions! I am overwhelmed, but more inspired than I was to get going on this new venture. I will be sure to keep you posted.

Thank you for your sweet words about Ellerie's Halloween costume. Somewhere between the day she was born and tying that flamingo hat around her chin, I realized that being a mama is very fun. It was so sweet to see her big grin in costume. It is awesome to watch her grow.

And finally, whether you've read the blog, shared a link, purchased a stamp or took an e-course thank you for your support this past year. I celebrated a business milestone this week that is going to allow me to invest back into this blog and my shop to create more inspring content and creative products. 2014 is going to be a good year.

Today (with the help of my parents – thank you, thank you Mom and Dad) I am setting up my booth at the Queen Bee Market in Oceanside. I'll be there with stamps, calendars and fun flair badges (they will be available for sale online through Scrapbook and More) from 4-9pm today and 9-3pm tomorrow. If you're local, I hope you'll come by and say hi.

    Happy November. Happy weekend.

p.s. I recently updated my FAQ page to share what camera lens I have been using, our favorite San Diego restaurants, what paint color is on our walls and more.

  • Flamingo

This might be my favorite sewing project yet. But it's not very practical as a costume… the flamingo neck doesn't stand up straight so it really only works laying down. That's okay though, Ellerie is excellent at laying down. The wings are my favorite part (I used felt for the base, added felt feathers and then secured them to store bought butterfly wings). We'll be keeping them for future dress-up play for sure. (…and maybe next October I'll get a real tutorial for this costume together.)

    Flamingobaby

    Have a wonderful Halloween.

    He

    He…

has been working 12-8pm these past few weeks. is here when Ellerie wakes up now, but misses seeing her before bedtime. is awesome at making coffee. is such a phenomenal dad.

    Podcasts

I mentioned last week that I have been listening to podcasts while walking with Ellerie around the neighborhood. I love it because I feel like I'm getting exercise, Ellerie is getting fresh air and I'm able to learn something interesting at the same time. Recently, I have been really enjoying the Another Mother Runner podcast. I haven't listened to it in awhile but I also really like Dishing up Nutrition. If you are a scrapbooker, I am sure you've heard of Paperclipping Roundtable. I have been a guest on that one a few times and enjoy it as well. I'm always hearing good things about This American Life, Simple Mom and Joy the Baker, but have yet to get into those three.

I would love to hear in the comments what you love to listen to!

And though it seems like there are endless options of podcasts available, I am really interested in starting my own. (Five or so years late to the party, I know.) It was sort of whim when I threw it out on twitter, but I haven't stopped thinking about it since. Ideally, I'd love to chat weekly or bi-weekly about motivation, creativity, making stuff, goal-setting and whatever else comes up. I plan on running through my Rolodex of creative friends and acquaintances as guest hosts, and then building a larger Rolodex of interesting people to share their thoughts. We'll hear from letterpressers, food bloggers, authors, artists, photographers, gardeners, florists, marathoners, inventors, small business owners, moms, dads and more.

This is not a "get-rich quick" or even a "get-rich slow" scheme. It's more of a "Dude, I really want to make this happen" scheme. But I need a little help to get started. If you (or someone you know) can help me launch a podcast (tell me the equipment I need to buy, how to create the recordings, how to make it work with guests, how to upload to iTunes, etc.) please shoot me an email. I am more than willing to pay for assistance and guidance from someone who knows what they are doing. I want to get this rolling soon and know it would be easier if I had some help that isn't just Google.

So yes! Share your favorite podcasts! Email me (elise.blahaATgmail.com) if you know how to start one!

It's funny – you do something once, it's nothing. You do it twice – it's something. You do it three times – it's tradition. This November, Paul and I will host our third Thanksgiving dinner in four years and we are very much looking forward to it. I realized a week ago that to build my "tradition" I needed to send out paper invitations (to the six family members we invite).

    Thanks3

Per usual (see our 2010 invites here and 2012 invites here), I stuck with something handwritten and used supplies that I had on hand. This year it was gold Hambly transparencies layered on top of brown cardstock. I was looking through drawers to find the paper that would hold the text and I realized a Project Life 3×4 card would be perfect. I just had to round the corners of the 5×7 paper and it all made sense.

    Thanks4
    Thanks5

I wrote my simple text on the cards and stiched all three pieces together with my sewing machine. Then I stuck them in leftover envelopes, fancied them up with a heart stamp and washi tape and called them done! Now hopefully Ellerie's halloween costume will come together just as easily…
