One of my bestfriends, Erin, is having a baby girl in April. I'm so excited to be co-hosting her shower at my house in the beginning of March. Early in the process, when we asked Erin what she wanted the shower to be like she responded, "I'm feeling earthtones." So "earthtones" it is.

We're going to throw a candlelit dinner/backyard picnic with s'mores and twinkle lights then spend the night on air mattresses in my living room watching movies. There are just six of us girls so it's a small group and perfect for this sort of party.

    Watercolorinvites4

At the end of last month, I wanted to get the invitations out the door and decided instead of messing around with graphics in Photoshop, I'd work up something super simple (black text on white paper) and then add color embellishment with watercolors. I always love the look of a simple font (this is Gotham) paired with script. I used my tablet to handwrite her name (though you could totally handwrite the name after printing too).

    Watercolorinvites2

I left plenty of space on the top of the invite to add the watercolor though I wasn't sure exactly what it would be. I "practiced" my colors with some lines on scratch paper and decided simple lines were perfect.

    Watercolorinvites

A little bit of paint mixing and I had four "earthtone" colors from my cheap watercolor set. These were crazy simple to make but so fun. I forget how much I enjoy these sorts of projects and man do I love "designing" with no agenda at all. I am so looking forward to throwing this party.

  • BRANDINGanewventure

One of my favorite parts of any new venture is coming up with the promotional pieces to go with it. While I am not so good at designing for others (I am sort of a one trick pony), branding for myself is something I really enjoy. The communication process is quick (about the amount of time that it takes to get my brain to tell my fingers what to do) and I know exactly what works for my aesthetic.

With all aspects of my business marketing (and with all my social media channels), I like to keep the overall "feel" pretty much the same. My "brand" is photo heavy (just look at the sidebars and banner of this blog). It's mostly black and white with color coming in through the photos. It's a mix of VERY simple sans-serif fonts and my own handwriting. It's generally capital letters. It's pretty clean. It's big on statements (like "I MAKE STUFF.").

This is my comfort zone. I know what I am doing with these things and over the years I have worked within these parameters enough that I feel like I have found a sweet spot that works for me. There is nothing cutting edge about any of my marketing. This means I am never going win any design awards but because nothing is too trendy, it's ideally not going to look dated.

The challenge whenever I try something new, is to keep the style similar (so when you see it you think, "Ah yes, this looks like Elise!") but also make it different (so when you see it you also think, "Ah yes, this seems exciting!).

My new shop/project needed a few different things to get off the ground. A name, first, obviously. I played around with a few things and did some googling to see what already existed. I love that MAKE29 is short and nods to the number and the "make" concept. I was also glad to see that the #make29 hashtag hadn't really been used. The logo is just text (two fonts next to each other) because (drumroll please…) that's what I know how to do.

    Make29webpage

For the Internet world I needed to redo my website (this was a LONG time coming) and shop page. The MAKE29 landing page had to pack in a lot of info without making this project seem too complicated so I kept it simple. Black and white. Nothing fancy with the fonts or photos.

    Make29shoppage

The shop page is a gray grid format because I love how a grid looks. As the new editions are released, the gray boxes will turn into product photos and become active links. From the linked page you'll be able to read about the product, see various photos and add to your cart. It's empty now, but I think the look will only improve as product photos are added throughout the year.

    Make29newsletter

I decided to correspond the launch of MAKE29 with the launch of my newsletter and drew from the website feel to design that. Eventually, I will have product photos to highlight in my monthly newsletters, but for now I just stuck with some various images that represent "making" and fit the color scheme.

    Make29trailer

The video trailer was totally random but something extra I wanted for the launch. I gave myself one day to brainstorm and what I ended up with is totally different than where I started. I "storyboarded" it (sketched out a plan) one night before bed then filmed each letter being made separately (with my iPhone resting on a stool over my table) the next day. I edited it together in iMovie and added the voiceover there. The light was changing while I filmed, I stumbled over a few words and it's probably not going to get an Oscar nod, but it's fun and represents what I do and this project.

My main goal with everything I do is to not over-think it. I have a saying that I repeat whenever I'm stuck on a project … "Nobody cares about almost." It reminds me to either follow-through and finish or drop it and move on. "Almost" complete = nothing.

Check back later today for a preview of the first product that will go on sale Saturday, 2/22. Look for how I tweaked my business cards, "thank you" cards and packaging stickers in a follow-up post next week. Thank you for letting me share my excitement about this process and project.

  • 28things

It's birthday week! I wanted to continue my annual tradition of sharing the 28 things that have made the past year great.

    Library

the library / I am embarrassed that it took me until my 29th trip around the sun to start enjoying and taking advantage of my local library. Every time I walk out with books for free I feel a little bit giddy. It's amazing.

House of Cards / we got totally hooked on this Netflix Original Series. It's too good and designed for healthy binge-watching. We just started season two (three episodes in) and !!!!!!!!!

robot vaccum / my parents bought us this as a housewarming gift. I am disgusted and amazed with how much dust and dirt this guy picks up on it's weekly trips around the house.

    Ppbook2

Pinhole Press / I love the baby book and e&p pre-baby book (I'll be sharing it soon!) that I had printed through these guys. The design process is simple and seem-less and the quality is amazing.

Minnetonka moccasins / I wear these all day, every day and I adore them. Size down, let them stretch out and you will not regret it.

Ikea BESTA cabinets / my dad and I used these to build a media console and a long cabinet in my office

    Abstract-art

abstract painting / this was the year that I played a lot with paint and giant canvases and started to not hate the abstracts that resulted.

Sherlock / we got totally hooked on this miniseries. So interesting and odd and well-done.

black coffee / 28 will be remembered as the age I became a mom and I learned to drink my coffee black. For some reason the latter makes me feel more grown-up than the former. The secret for me (and Paul) was switching to a medium roast and not over-extracting the coffee beans (meaning using enough beans for the amount of water).

nut granola / breakfast food of the year. I have gestational diabetes to thank for this one. (I am 99% sure no one has ever "thanked" gestational diabetes for anything.)

    Diningrug

our World Market dining table / I looked long and hard for a table and I am so (so) thrilled that I ended up going with this one.

    Maxi

red alternative apparel maxi skirt / technically I had this when I was 27, but I wore it out this year. I recommend sizing up for a better fit.

quinoa spinich salads / I was totally intimated by quinoa until this year. So great thrown in with a salad.

behance action book / ordered one of these notebooks after seeing it on Ali's instagram. My absolute favorite for making dreams into plans.

    Chambray

chambray button downs / I have a light one and a dark one and I wear them (at least) four out of seven days a week.

Windmill Farms / I love our local grocery store. It's like a non-chain Trader Joe's or Sprouts. They carry all sorts of random things in bulk bins and the produce and deli is top-notch and insanely well priced. Best part is we can walk there, and Ellerie and I do…daily.

Larabar ALT bars / my go-to mid-morning snack.

    Quilt2

Ellerie's quilt / so technically I made this while 27. But it wasn't fully enjoyed until this year and I love it so much.

hanging plants / this was the year of the plant, without a doubt. My house is full of them. I try not to play plant favorites but the original hanging plant in my bedroom wins for sure.

    Rug

thrifting / I still don't know exactly what I am doing, but I get a rush when I enter a thrift store. The thrill of the hunt is no joke. Perfect activity and field-trip for Ellerie and me.

the ERGObaby carrier / hands-down my number one baby must-have from about 2 months on. Without this, my sweet sidekick and I would not go on nearly as many adventures. Fun fact, if you get the navy one I like did and your baby is bald like mine, everyone will assume your baby is a boy regardless of how pink her pants are.

    Wreath7

my succulent wreath / probably my favorite 30 minute DIY of the year because it was one of those things I never thought I'd be able to make.

glo minerals sheer lipstick in bali / I received this as a free sample over two years ago and just rediscovered it in my drawer. The perfect shade AND chemical free.

    Pancakes

pancakes / we had never made them from scratch until this year. And I know they will be a near weekend tradition from here on out.

#eliselovesmornings / obsessed with my daily photo project. Obviously, like a complete crazy person, I am already dreaming about the photobook that will result.

    DIYplantstand

terra cotta pots / totally got hooked this year. Cheap, various sized and they match everything.

Ellerie's giggle / I wish I could bottle it up and fill rooms of my house with this giggle. Since I can't, I just video it excessively.

"I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning." – Joseph Priestly / my favorite quote from the past year.

ps. my 26 favorite things and 27 favorite things.

    various inks throughout are affiliate.

  • Weekend6

As part of my word WHOLE this year, I want celebrate the work of others by sharing links to my friends, possible friends and complete strangers who are doing great things on the Internet. This is some of the rad stuff I recently saw online…

love getting a glimpse into how people work in this Creative Q&A series.

…and here's another awesome maker interview.

this will be my next plant project.

the story of my life summed up on a tee shirt.

I've been seriously bit by the knitting bug again and am loving this sweater pattern.

    how to make paper.

I tried this jewelry cleansing method and while it's nothing like having your stuff professionally polished, I was thrilled with the results.

    stunning photo and type layout.

friendly reminder that you can save 28% on the get quilty eCourse through the end of the month with code FEBRUARY.

Hooray! My business baby is out in the world. Feels GOOD. I've got a long way to go. But something that I have learned is that with time management skills and a passion for what you're doing, "work" doesn't feel like "work." I've been scheming and planning for months and this project (while huge!) is going to be (I hope!) very manageable thanks to some professional list-making, spread-sheeting and time-budgeting. I am so excited.

And I can't thank you enough for sharing in my excitement. I woke up Monday morning with a knot in my stomach (and like 14 in my hair). But you know what "They" say…."if you're not scared of your dreams they are not big enough." … or something like that. I'll be sharing the first product and some "behind the scenes" re-branding posts early next week.

Elseware on the Internet, my podcast feed got approved by iTunes! I plan to get a few more episodes recorded (with guests!) and develop an actual schedule before making the official debut, but we're getting closer. I will write a HOW TO MAKE A PODCAST post in the near future with simple step-by-step instructions (I would have killed for this resource a few months ago). You can see a fraction of my planned topics in the photo above.

Also on the agenda, an updated post (here's the first one) about how I am making things work as a work-at-home Mama. Spoiler alert, having an awesome nanny come for eight hours a week has been a game-changer for me, my business and my family. I am a tornado of productivity on Monday and Wednesday mornings and Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday all get to reap the rewards.

In other news…Happy Valentine's Day! This is the first year since 2011 that Paul has not been deployed for the month of February which is just crazy. We're celebrating with a healthy baby, leftovers for dinner and House of Cards season 2 (released today on Netflix).

    Have a great weekend.

  • MAMAgiftideas

I am entering the season of life where all my girlfriends are starting to have babies. I was at Target this week picking up things to send to a new mama friend and as I was shopping I kept coming up with more items that I would have wanted or did receive in those first few months that made a real difference.

This list wrote itself. Save it for when you need a gift for a new mom. I promise, she already has enough newborn onesies.

a nice robe – don't worry if she already has one, this one will get worn when that one is in the wash.

a nightgown – something black that's loose and comfy but still provides a bit of hot-factor.

huge underwear – I was warned to buy bigger underwear for after the baby was born, but didn't realize that by big they meant at least 4 sizes larger than usual (especially if there is a c-section incision to account for).

a set of thank you notes – kind of an odd gift, but she'll need them.

a sheet of postage stamps – ditto.

facial wipes – ideal for some of those late, late bedtimes.

an iTunes giftcard – she will not use this for music, but it will come in handy for bonus tries in Candy Crush or when she's downloading the most expensive white noise app there is at 3:30 in the morning.

vitamin C tablets – great for the nursing mama.

    pre-natal vitamins – ditto.

a box of pads – needed post birth for two to eight weeks. She will have bought some but underestimated the need.

the boring household essentials – dish soap, laundry detergent, toilet paper, hand soap, etc. Bonus points if you buy her exact brands.

chapstick – and a backup chapstick for when she loses the first one.

a good smelling candle – she will not have time to light this right now, but someday she will.

nail file and cuticle cream – on a random Tuesday she's going to look at her hands and desperately want to fix them.

a donut if you're visiting in the morning.

a huge salad from her favorite restaurant if you're visiting in the afternoon.

dinner with plenty of leftovers for her and her partner if you're coming by in the evening.

chocolate chip cookies and a bottle of red wine if you're visiting at any time.

a sincere compliment – "you look fantastic." and/or "you're doing an amazing job." will both mean the world to her.

a Nordstrom giftcard – plus instructions to get a professional bra fitting as soon as she's up for leaving the house. Tell her you'll watch the baby or go with and hold the baby.

a pedicure – offer to watch her baby or go with and offer to hold the baby.

clean her house – wipe down counters, take out the trash, break down cardboard boxes, run the laundry, water the plants. Don't ask, just do it.

sign your emails with "no need to respond."

a pack of headbands, hair ties and bobby pins.

    a baseball hat.

    a dark colored maxi skirt.

a gift certificate to Pinhole Press – she'll think you're insane because she'll never have time upload photos again, much less make a photo book, but she will.

take photos – go to her house and take photos of her and the new baby. Don't pose her, just quietly snap away while they do normal things. She will cherish them.

popcicles or ice cream bars – I don't know why, but these are so good when you're exhausted and overwhelmed.

a judgement free zone – let her complain about her husband, her mom, her baby and her new body. Not only will you not judge, you also will forget whatever she told you in a few months when everything is back to it's new normal.

fresh fruit – bonus points if you wash the apples and cut up the watermelon for her.

bendy staws – so she can drink water without sitting up.

offer to design/order/address/mail her birth annoucements.

just listen – listen to her tell you what it's like to be a new mama. Don't talk abut your experience. Don't talk about your own baby. Don't give advice or suggestions. Just listen. This is the hardest thing on this list but will mean the most, for sure.

  • Pancakes

Pancakes are one of those foods where unless they are perfection they are just not worth the effort and/or the calories. I don't love them from a box (too baking soda tasting). I generally don't like them at a diner (too thick and heavy). But these, homemade and adapted from a recipe in The Commonsense Kitchen, I love.

    • nearly 2 C milk (we use skim because that's what we buy)
    • juice from one lemon
    • 1 C white flour
    • 1/2 C wheat flour
    • 3 T wheat germ (this is added to cut the bitterness but keep the flavor of wheat flour)
    • 1/4 C sugar
    • 1/2 T baking powder
    • 1/2 t baking soda
    • 1/2 t salt
    • 2 eggs, beaten
    • 2 T butter, melted
    • vegetable oil for cooking the pancakes
    • optional berries (a good handful)

Squeeze the lemon juice into a measuring cup and then add the milk until you have 2 cups of liquid toal. (This is a substitute for buttermilk but works just fantastically.) Let that sit for about 10 minutes (you'll notice the milk takes on a slightly thicker consistency from the lemon juice acid – that's great).

In a small bowl, whisk together the flours, wheat germ (can be purchased at health food stores and is super cheap. If you don't have this, no big deal, but it helps make for great flavor, I promise), sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

In a larger bowl, beat the eggs then add in the melted butter and lemonmilk.

Add some vegetable oil to your pan and begin heating (medium high is great).

Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix until combined, but don't over mix. Check the consistency of your pancake mixture. Is it super runny like cupcake mix? Add a bit more white flour. Is is more like cookie dough? Add a bit more milk. We like to throw in washed blueberries or strawberries at this stage.

When your pan is hot and your pancake constancy is right, turn the stove down to medium and pour the pancake batter into the pan (we use a 1/3 C measuring cup and don't fill it all the way).

Flip your pancakes when bubbles start to appear on the surface. They are done when the second side springs back to the touch. (You'll get the hang of "done" after a few.)

This recipe makes about sixteen 5" pancakes or more than enough for Paul and I to have breakfast and then breakfast for dinner later on in the week. We eat them with peanut butter and maple syrup. So great.

  • Ilovefebruary

    'tis the season! Happy Tuesday.

ps. thanks for the kind words on yesterday's post. new ventures are the best and it's so much fun to share.

  • At long last, after I fear way too much hype, I am excited to share details about my newest business venture. This post has a lot of text, but first, a short video trailer :

MAKE29trailer from elise blaha on Vimeo.

It's called make29 and it officially launches on 2/22, my 29th birthday.

If you have followed along here for a little while, you know I love a good birthday challenge. The original was when I turned 22 and decided to decorate a playing card everyday for a year. Then for a few years, I would make a list of things to accomplish where the number of things matched the age I was turning. I switched things up when I turned 26 and decided to complete 26 craft projects. When I turned 27, I set out to use 27 different materials to create 27 different projects.

    6a00d8341c71c353ef0154383f344d970c-500wi

Over the years, I have had varying degrees of success with these ventures. Only once did I complete my original mission within my birthday year. But ultimately, I flexed my creativity muscles and attempted something new because of the challenges.

I wanted to re-enter the birthday challenge game on my 29th birthday and I really wanted to try something different with my business. This venture combines the two and was imagined last October in a long, late-night notebook scribbling session.

    6a00d8341c71c353ef0168e5ee2a9a970c-500wi

Starting on February 22nd, I am going to launch one handmade product in my shop a month. The items will be produced and sold in editions of 29 or 290. They vary greatly in materials used, but all are related to something I have tried, written about on the blog (which I have been keeping since I was 20!) or loved over the past nine years.

Some of the items are relatively easy to produce (like letterpress prints!) and those will be the larger editions of 290. Some of them are very time intensive (like knit blankets!) and those will be the smaller editions of 29.

The goal is to celebrate the past decade and challenge myself professionally and creatively. I am taking this year to really experiment with my business and see what sells and what I like producing best. I am taking this year to play with new and old methods and materials. I am taking this year to develop some really awesome items that make me proud.

    6a00d8341c71c353ef017d3cfcd103970c-500wi

It has been a really long time since I have been so excited about a business project. I am so pumped about this venture. I am starting with an empty shop. And a year from now, I'll have created myself or collaborated on twelve wildly different items.

This year is going to be crazy busy, crazy inspiring and I can already tell it's going to fly. You can see the "official" website for this project here (man, do I love playing with HTML).

Product one will go live here on February 22nd but I will share more details (including release time) on the blog during the week before.
