    HOORAY PODCAST!

This is good. After I launched on Wednesday, I went back myself and listened to the first and third episodes (I didn't listen to them originally because I didn't want to get cold feet) and afterwards I was like "Alright, excellent!" Feels good to sign my name to them. I love to write, and I always will, but talking is so much easier for me. Plus it adds the "human factor" which sometimes people forget about.

Huge thanks if you listened or helped to spread the word. (THIS IS SUPER COOL, BTW) I'll be taking your comments and suggestions for future episodes into consideration too so keep sharing them with me. Look for new episodes on Wednesdays. I have so many ideas and am scheduling interviews like it's my job.

Also this week, I made some progress on future MAKE29 editions. April is officially ready to launch and May has been designed and ordered. That feels really good. If you follow me on twitter you saw I'm considering dying 725 yards of fabric for a project this fall. I clearly have issues. Does anyone in Southern California dye fabric and want to collaborate with me? I'm not joking. Please email me.

(I feel like my spirit animal is a bouncy ball right now.)

Paul has this weekend off from work which is always cause for great fanfare, cronuts and celebration. I'm going to do us all a solid and take two days off too.

Have a good one and happy 33rd anniversary M&D!

I have a vivid memory from when I was seven years old. It was Christmas Day and my family had opened Santa presents and then driven to Tahoe to make up for the fact that we wouldn't be near extended family in Minnesota for the holidays. That evening, after dinner, we hung out at the hotel and played with our new gifts and my dad took what I described then and totally remember now as my "favorites" photo.

I was laying on the ground in my "favorite" hotel. I was wearing my "favorite" black leggings (technically I had three pairs and I just rotated them around and around) and my "favorite" tunic in my "favorite" color then – light blue. I was reading my "favorite" Baby-Sitter's Club book. I was eating my my "favorite" barbecue flavored potato chips. I had a can of soda nearby and I remember at the time thinking "Weeeelll, Dr. Pepper is really my "favorite" but for this photo I can pretend it was Sprite."

I totally remember being so content in that moment (as much as a seven year old can recognize contentment). Then I remember a few days later when we got the film back how fun it was to see and re-live that moment. There I was with all my favorite things – all at the same time. It was a good day.

I got a rush of deja vu on Tuesday night when I saw a photo Hannah Low took at the Your Story Retreat. I'm 29 years old and I finally have a new "favorites" photo. I'm wearing my "favorite" chambray top (I have three and I just rotate them around and around) and my "favorite" pants in my current "favorite" color – olive green. I am wrapped in my "favorite" over-sized blue scarf. My hair is in my "favorite" place where it looks so bad that it's starting to come around again to good. I've got on my very "favorite" headband. And I'm doing my absolute "favorite" thing, crafting for no reason just the sheer joy of making something from scratch and learning a new skill. Switch out that water glass at my feet for red wine (apparently I can never get the beverage selection right) and boom – favorites all around.

    #photosalwayswin.

because someone will ask : chambray top, similar pants, similar scarf, headband.

A long time ago (like YEARS) I blogged about how in the future I was going to have my own TV show called, "Let's Get Crafty!" The studio audience would shout, "LETS!" "GET!" "CRAFTY!" and I would run out on stage brandishing glue sticks with ribbon stuck to the bottom of my shoes.

Let's just say, I am glad that idea didn't pan out. I do not have the hair for television.

But today I am excited to introduce "ELISE GETS CRAFTY" the podcast! It is slightly less awkward than a TV show but still discusses some of my very favorite topics. What I know to be true is that it's easier to have a conversation than write a blog post. You get to do cool things, like use inflection to denote sarcasm. You get to talk through thoughts as you're having them. You don't have to worry (as much) that someone is going to take a sentence out of context. It's faster. It's easier. It's less-edited. It's really just a fun additional way to connect and share ideas.

I have a few goals for this new venture.

First : I'd like to share some of the things that I have learned over the years about blogging, business, creativity, inspiration and motivation.

Second : I'd like to speak with some fun guests and learn from their experience. I am thrilled to be bringing some people on to talk about things that I don't already know about (like how to run an affiliate program for your own business or what it's like behind the scenes at the National Stationery Show).

Third : I'd like a different channel to connect with readers and grow my business and brand in a way that feels authentic, is interesting to me and isn't too time consuming.

The first THREE episodes are now live and you can listen here or download through iTunes (search "elise gets crafty"). I am working on getting the episodes listed on other podcast channels. The first episode I recorded before I knew what I was doing to talk through my plan and then figure out how to actually set up a podcast. The second is just an old video post (elise talks college) that I turned into an episode. The third is about developing an editorial calendar for your blog and features my first guest, Sarah Von Bargen from Yes and Yes.

New episodes will go live on Wednesdays (probably not every single Wednesday, but often enough). I'd love to hear episode suggestions or guest host ideas if you have them and I hope you enjoy. And FYI, the blog is not going anywhere! I'm just experimenting with a lot of different things this year. Thanks for helping me stretch and grow.

  • Yourstory1 Yourstory2 Yourstory9

l had the pleasure of spending four days on the Oregon Coast this past week, wearing my collection of humongous scarves and teaching at the Your Story Retreat.

    Yourstory8

I said this to the women attending at the very beginning and I say it again here: my job, while awesome, can be very isolating. It's just me and my computer and sometimes it feels like with all the online connection available, it's difficult to connect in real life. I do not seek out opportunities to make friends often or give myself time to really dig deeper below the surface.

    Yourstory7 Yourstory4

And in some ways, that (digging deeper) is what this retreat was about. There were 21 of us, for the most part packed into one big house. Everyone, I think, comes in with a different objective and different expectations for what they want to get out of it…escape, inspiration, relaxation, engagement, connection. Everyone leaves, I think, with a little bit of each plus a greater understanding that expectations are sort of lame and so much more happens when you're open to letting them go.

    Yourstory13

My teaching day was Friday and I taught rubber stamp carving in the morning and then we used our stamps to create patterned paper. In the afternoon, we bound small books with the paper we'd stamped.

    Yourstory3

This is my sweet spot in many ways. Stamping and book binding are both projects that I have experimented with over the past few years. They are skills that you wouldn't necessarily try on your own because purchasing the supplies before you know exactly what to do with them is overwhelming. I love that there is a clear take away and we get to "finish" a project. It wouldn't be an Elise class if we didn't just execute (ideally without second-guessing).

    Yourstory6

The other thing that I love is watching peoples' personalities come out through what they decide to carve. Stamp carving is a fun project that allows for a lot of variety and personal style. And then book-binding is sort of the opposite because it's pretty exact and "step-by-step."

    Yourstory14

I really didn't know what to expect from this trip. The teaching portion was much more comfortable for me than I thought it would be – I think mostly because I loved the projects and more importantly, had spent Thursday getting to know the students (and therefore felt like I could turn the awkward notch down about 74%). I also loved the learning, we took self-portraits, discussed finding mental balance and painted with watercolors (taught by Kelly Barton).

    Yourstory15 Yourstory10

And the other portion, the bonding portion, was so enjoyable. As mentioned, it's so easy for me to keep the distance that comes with sitting behind a screen. Over the years I have gotten very good at protecting myself through text, but in real life, I get to do fun things like use sarcasm and demonstrate listening skills. I enjoy watching people warm up and feel like I really learned 100 new things.

    Yourstory16

Including how to crochet! Hannah, who totally became a true friend of mine, taught me one evening after I became obsessed with the blanket she was making and purchased yarn and a crochet hook in town. I have tried to learn many times before but this time I was able to commit. I ended up crocheting what can only be described as NOT a cowl. But it was hilarious and therapeutic.

The whole four days were truly.

    Yourstory11

What a pleasure it was to teach and attend. I came home Sunday refreshed and reminded that I need to step out of my bubble more offline and really relax and show more of ME online. I've gotten a little caught up here lately trying to clarify my thoughts but I am learning that the people who are going to get it, the people who are wanting the connection, the people who I want to connect with and the people who are truly listening rarely need clarification.

    Yourstory12

Lessons everywhere folks. Even (especially?) on the Oregon Coast. Thank you, Liz, for hosting such a great event and thank you to each the rad ladies who showed up and shared with me.

I'd totally be remiss if I didn't also thank Paul and my sister-in-law Kristen for taking care of Ellerie so I was able to enjoy this time away. Thank you. And one more sidenote, photos in this post were edited with the new A Beautiful Mess actions for PSE.

  • Marchgoalsupdate

At the beginning of the year I shared nine goals for 2014.

It's been three months and here's where I stand :

take a pottery class / still need to sign up for this one. I'm thinking maybe the fall? When things slow down (is that a joke?).

    Newsletter

launch a shop newsletter / DONE (and this was much easier than I expected). Sign up here.

take a trip as a family / we went to Sacramento in February which was awesome, but last week we booked a vacation to Houston in late May which we are really looking forward to.

    Garden

grow a decent vegetable garden / started but at this point the word "decent" is very much a stretch. Looking forward to getting more dirt and more plants going this April.

finish decorating the house / have not made one stitch of progress on this except to find a vintage dresser that is actually going to be in the bedroom as soon as I find a bench for the entry.

    Cripesinfeb

capture one photo of the three of us each month / I'm three for three with this project and it's the most fun ever.

start a podcast / DONE. hooray! My podcast officially launches Wednesday and full details will be up on the blog then.

    Backyardpatio

finish off the backyard / calling this DONE although I'd still like to hang some lights.

    Here4

launch the big new venture / DONE. This is, of course, MAKE29 which I have been planning since last fall. So far (two months in) I am blown away by the success and very inspired. More thoughts and musings to be shared in a future post. Obviously there is a lot of work to still go into this but it's out there which is awesome.

Success so far and lots to do (mostly in the house finish up arena which has taken a backseat while I work on a few business things). Because goals keep me going, I would like to add two more projects to my list…

    • sign up for a mama & baby music class (Ellerie loves to dance!)
    • release my stamps as a digital stamp set (ideally in June…)
  • Weekend13

As part of my word WHOLE this year, I want celebrate the work of others by sharing links to my friends, possible friends and complete strangers who are doing great things on the Internet. This is some of the rad stuff I recently saw online…

did you hear TOMS is getting into coffee?

Ali's popular class, Hello Story, is starting again April 3rd. See a preview of what you can expect from the weekly lessons here.

  • MARCHplheader

As mentioned at the end of 2013, I am no longer completing my Project Life album on a weekly basis. I did that for two years. I enjoyed the process and I love my albums. This year I am taking a much more relaxed approach and playing more with this project. I don't have much of a plan other than to complete at least one (and sometimes many more) spread a month.

    MARCHpldetail2

The big win is that I can never be "behind" on this album. I also like that I don't have to worry about having seven horizontal 4×6 photos each week and can group photos by subject instead of date. I love that I will be under no "weekly deadlines" and will be blogging just once a month about my album.

    MARCH1

There is so much going on right now in REAL life that isn't making it into our ALBUM life. I think back to the Elise of last spring or the Elise of the spring before that and I cannot believe how much free time she had. WHAT WAS SHE DOING?!?! I wish I could go back in time, grab her, and pull her into the present to help me out. I'm 99% sure she's bored and totally willing.

All of that to say: I am learning that Project Life is taking a backseat while real life is so awesome and full. And I cannot express how OKAY I am with this. So this month it's a ton of photos of my cute kiddo and a ton of photos of my garden. This is not the entire story of March. Not even a fraction of the story. But it's some of it and for me, that's a great win.

    MarchPLspread

February ended with a 12×12 photo, so March starts with one. (Honestly this is just a mock up, I need to get the photo printed still.) Next to it is my Studio Calico creative team spread using the triangle stamp from the main Bluegrass Farm PL kit and embellishments from the add-ons.

    MARCHpldetail

Super cute embellishments that I just stuck together with a staple and then adhered to the outside of the pockets with glue dots. I love that I got so many great 4×6 photos on a page and still was able to add a few extras.

    MARCHpl2

The next layout is my favorite of the year so far. I took three photos of the three of us, cropped them to 6×12 and printed them as 3 4x6s. Then I just cropped them into the pockets.

    MARCHpl2a

I am only planning on filling ONE album this year and so it might seem nutty to include three of nearly the same photo but I think these photos are the sort of thing I'll actually care to look back on in 40 years.

    MARCHpl2b

This was another layout created for the SC creative team, this time using just the Bluegrass Farm main kit. I cut up a bunch of cards to fit my color scheme (LOVE that cloud one and the house is awesome too).

    MarchPLspread2

    And then it's garden time.

    MarchPLgarden1

I used a few assorted journaling cards and seed packets to fill the 3×4 pockets.

    MarchPLgarden2

And then played with some wood veneer embellishments (from past Studio Calico kits) mixed with 4×6 photos.

    MARCHplgardendetail2

I love the look of floating embellishments so that HERE COMES THE SUN got it's own 4×6 pocket.

    MARCHplgardendetail

And that's March! No stress, just simple. Thank you so much for following along. See my title page for this album here and 2014 album progress here.

We were very lucky: my mom saved my entire baby book collection and we were gifted many beautiful books so when Ellerie was born she had a full library at her disposal.

For this post, I wanted to share some of the non-classics that were totally new to me and we are loving. I've starred the ones that Ellerie (at 9 months) actually engages in and listens to (that I don't mind reading 14 times in a row). The others are ones that I personally love because they are gorgeous/fun/sweet and have an awesome message. I know she'll grow into these in time.

  • Leaving

I'm headed up north today to teach at the Your Story Retreat.

This is my first multi-night adventure away from the bug and I have a feeling she'll be crawling and saying "Da-Da" before I return Sunday afternoon. I think (hope?!) I've made peace with that.

And overall I am looking forward to getting away for a few days. Even the plane ride (three un-interrupted hours?!!?!!) sounds like a total vacation (if vacation means a chance to plan and write and think).

I'll be officially back at my desk Monday but there are posts (like my March Project Life update) scheduled to run while I'm away. I'm sure I'll be over-sharing here too.

    Have a good one.
