The film project (offically started in October) continues!

    0005_5 0006_6 0007_7

My goal is to take one roll of Ellerie a month. Generally trying for a photo or two a day.

    0012_12 0011_11

In my short time doing this I have learned (and re-learned) that film just brings it. It provides the magic that I can't seem to filter in (or filter out) with my digital cameras.

    0014_14 0015_15 0018_18 0019_19

It's an experiment and exercise in patience every month.

    0021_21

And usually, it's worth it ten times over.

*I've had a Canon EOS Rebel XS since high school that I still use whenever I shoot film. I shoot with this 50mm lens. My local photo developer sticks the images on a CD for me, so these are the un-touched digital files. See more film photos here.

Jaime Derringer abstract print, isi hand-dyed top, marketa leather clutch, moon & back cuff, the ABLE scarf, weareMFEO hanging planter, handspun yarn

It's been awhile since I've done an I LOVE round-up…mostly because my capsule wardrobe plan has me on a spending freeze so I feel strange linking up a bunch of suggestions of things to buy. It is gift-giving season though, so as sort of a middle ground, I thought I'd do a round-up of gorgeous handmade items I've found over the past few months.

Paul worked Thursday so our family celebrated Thanksgiving this year on Friday. We baked bread (much to Ellerie's joy), read books, watched some football, made more than enough food, grilled a turkey for the first time, sang the itsy-bitsy spider (on repeat, while wearing all of mama's bangles), enjoyed crazy warm weather and finished with a fire.

I'm learning the holidays mark the passing of time more than anything else. It's crazy to think Ellerie looked like this last year. I cannot imagine her next year. (Though, no doubt I'll be wearing chambray again). A few of these are iPhone photos, but most were snapped by my brother on this big camera. Thanks, Rob!

  • Cripe Family-The Goodness-018

On Sunday we were up in Sacramento and able to meet with Geoff and Lisa to take a few family photos. If you've been here awhile, you know Geoff and Lisa are our friends and have photographed our engagement, wedding, some headshots and then (more recently) our friend's wedding.

    Cripe Family-The Goodness-029Untitled-3Cripe Family-The Goodness-033 Cripe Family-The Goodness-010

I vividly remember at our engagement shoot in July 2009 telling Paul we'd just have these guys photograph our lives – they'd be taking photos of our kids someday. I was sort of joking (mostly because kids?! OMG, that's AT LEAST five years away. Who knows what I'll be doing in five years. Spoiler alert: the same exact thing).

    Cripe Family-The Goodness-023 Cripe Family-The Goodness-020 Cripe Family-The Goodness-034

And yet, here we are. 1 wedding, 1 marriage, 3 moves, 2 deployments, 1 baby, 1 business, a few hair cuts, more than a few bottles of red wine and 780 craft projects later (Paul's really into craft projects).

    Cripe Family-The Goodness-047Cripe Family-The Goodness-016

When we talked about doing this, I said it might be fun to meet by the state capital where we did our first look in April 2010. They were game.

    Nailedit1

I didn't realize how game until I got the photos back.

    Nailedit2

Different season. Different occasion. Same tree. Stronger love. And I'd trade a bouquet for a baby anyday.

    Cripe Family-The Goodness-083

Thank you Geoff & Lisa! You guys are too good.

all photos by The Goodness. Ellerie's outfit is Target and shoes are Freshly Picked. My dress is Gap, tights are Target and boots are Madewell from a few years ago (similar). Paul's outfit is…(jk).

  • Grayknit

I'm one of those people that always looking for life lessons in my craft projects.

In fact, maybe that's my book title. Lessons in Craft : 25 Things Making Stuff has Taught Me. Or another option: Tales from the Craft Supply Store : Excuse Me, Ma'am, Weren't You Just Here Yesterday?

So before I get into the lessons, first let me throw this on the table: knitting a sweater has been on my list of things to do since I turned 23. If you're counting, we're coming up on SEVEN YEARS of setting and not obtaining a goal.

The only difference between 2008/every year since (including 2011 when I had so much time on hands) and now is that in 2014 I actually sat down and did it.

Lesson one : you gotta do the work.

I think it's also safe to say that after 29 knit blankets I was anxious to do something else. Enter the striped cowl. Enter this sweater.

    Knitribbing

I used Jane Richmond's Oatmeal pattern and Lion Brand chunky yarn in silver gray. The pattern was simple and the yarn was easy to work with yet I still ended up googling eight different techniques. Eight times I had no idea what I was doing until I watched (#thankyouyoutube) someone else explain it. A knitting pattern, if you haven't tried to read one, is like a different language. You need it translated to make any sense of it.

Lesson two : ask for help.

When I sat down to do this, I could cast on and off. I knew how to do a knit stitch and how to knit in a round. THAT'S IT. But I read through the pattern just one line at a time and learned how to do each technique as it was required. (This is exactly how I learned how to quilt.)

Lesson three : take it one step at a time or you'll overwhelm yourself.

    Knitsweater

And the result is a sweater…albeit a messed up one. Somehow I made the collar too big and the ribbing on the neck looks totally off (because it is… likely I had an odd number of stitches to start). The gauge throughout varies a bit. The sleeves ended up too large and sort of bell like which I think is due to poor counting and picking up extra stitches and probably a handful of other user errors including being awful at double pointed needles.

    Knits

But again, here's the good news: it IS a sweater. It HAS sleeves. It HAS ribbing at the bottom! I properly added stitches to create the arm part. I understand how to purl stitch now. I get the concept of double pointed needles (though they are the bane of my existence). I fully respect that I need to focus more on keeping a consistent gauge. I also understand that I have to be precise right from the beginning (this is a weakness of mine). And I can (kind of) conceptualize how knitwear is made.

Lesson 4 : you have to actually go through the process to learn anything.

    IMG_4834

This is far from my best project ever but it's absolutely one of my favorites. Thanks to this project, I can read a bit more of a knitting pattern. I can purl! I can greatly appreciate the art of making well-fitting knitwear. I have a new addiction and something to build on.

Lesson 5 : it's totally okay to mess up that first pancake – you're learning.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to the craft supply store.*

    *another book title option.

As part of my word WHOLE this year, I want celebrate the work of others by sharing links to my friends, possible friends and complete strangers who are doing great things on the Internet. This is some of the rad stuff I recently saw online…

    sea glass sculptures.

we cooked Brussels sprouts like this three times in the past week (so good!).

    such a clever engagement announcement.

"But most of all I learned that life is fragile and far too fleeting to fear failing." – a beautiful post from my friend Kayla Aimee.

giving fewer gifts and more thought.

not sure if carrot cake is appropriate to serve at Thanksgiving, but we're doing it.

two kickstarters on my radar : the best silk blouse, ever and the playground.

if I ever find myself living in a cold weather state, I know what boots I'm buying.

down with mom guilt (it's possible I've already shared this, but even so…it could stand repeating!).

cactus wall art? too cool (and inspiring my nye party decor).

can't wait to tuck these under the tree for Ellerie.

and remember, if you're interested in the JUST START stamp, they are only available through Wednesday.

WORK : I finally got the digital stamps created and into the shop. This was only eight months in the making. You can purchase here. And if you're like me and don't really know what digital stamps are, you can watch this video tutorial about how to install them (on to your mac) and see a few simple ways to play around with them. I was blown away with the versatility of digital stamps. I can't believe I waited this long. Only eight bucks for the full set, folks.

PLAY : Paul and I went to the Bastille concert this week. It's the second concert we attended together and only my fourth concert ever (I know, that's embarrassing). I'm a huge fan of the Bastille album and it was so fun to see them live. I need to have more fun in 2015. Adding that to the list in Sharpie as we speak. 😉

WORK : I ordered that JUST START stamp for future packaging and when I shared a photo on IG got some interest so for just a few days you can purchase one here. Seriously. Just a few days. Sale ends Wednesday at midnight PST and then that's it. Maybe the next stamp will be JUST FINISH.

PLAY : I'm knitting away on my second sweater. Can't wait to share how the first turned out on the blog next week. I'm also working on an encouraging post for new moms. I so wish I had read this post 16 months ago. But, knowing where I was at back then, I wouldn't have believed a word of it.

WORK : I'm doing a lot of back and forth with my killer GET TO WORK BOOK designers and the results are going to be pretty fantastic. If you're into the instagram thing and want to follow along, I've created a separate account @gettoworkbook. Down the line, I see this as a business account where I can share user photos of the book, motivational stuff, behind the scenes, updates etc.

PLAY : the Serial podcast. STOP IT RIGHT NOW. I think this week's was one of the best episodes yet. It captured the human factor in away the others have not for me. I cried more than once.

WORK : I ordered stickers (from Sticker Giant) to include as part of the December edition of MAKE29. I adore a good sticker and these are perfect for what I have planned. I think I'm going to make "free gift with purchase" stickers a big part of GET TO WORK BOOK. And maybe our Christmas cards this year. And maybe all mail I send out forever.

PLAY : we are headed up to Northern California this afternoon to watch some football and drink some good coffee. So very excited to see some friends and get a night with Paul in the city. I'll be up bright and early tomorrow morning to list the knit blankets and then it's game time.

Wednesdays and Fridays are my "off-work" days which means they are my "on-mama" days. Both are challenging and inspiring in their own ways. Ellerie is now a full-fledged toddler which means there's no "One sec!" where I can dash out of the room to send an email or move the laundry. (She comes with and "helps" in both cases.)

    IMG_4900

Yesterday (techically today, I'm typing this as she naps so it's ready for Thursday morning) was Wednesday and by 8am we were out of things to do. When this happens, I generally let her pull everything out of my office cupboards while I drink my coffee and dream about sleeping in.

    IMG_4898

She dumped an entire plastic bin of craft supplies, picked up the watercolors, shouted "More!" and I was like, "Wonderful idea, boss! Let's make that happen."

    IMG_4894

We got set up pretty quick (this is not my first watercolor rodeo) and she was off and painting in her highchair (at the dining table, covered in kraft paper).

    IMG_4930

I use "painting" liberally here. Ellerie LOVES the paint, but she mostly loves mushing the brush into the paint and then sticking it into the water to see the colorful clouds.

    IMG_4924

She also loves sticking her hand in the water dish while mushing, obviously.

    Untitled-1

And when that's gets boring she loves painting on herself.

    IMG_4927

I love all of it. My "rules" are no sticking the brush in your mouth and no dumping the water bin (it helps if I hold it) but other than that, paint it all. Paint the table. Paint your onesie. Paint your hair. Paint mama's hand. It's watercolor. That's what it's for, right?

    IMG_4913

If we end up getting paint on the paper – well hey! Bonus!

    IMG_4903

In my head, this feels like a 20-25 minute activity, but I think that's because on Wednesday and Fridays I operate on toddler time. In reality it was probably closer to 7-9 minutes. But it somehow took up enough time to get the zoo to open. (I am totally ready to start a petition that all kiddo friendly places should open at sunrise, just like children do.)

    IMG_4942

Good stuff. I seriously cannot believe I get to be mama to this amazing girl. She turns 17 months old today! Keep growing, Ellerie, you're awesome!
