  • I dropped Paul off this morning for nine hours of testing. My stomach had butterflies in it for him. I woke up at 3AM and 5AM worried that we had overslept. You would think it was me. I am so proud of him for all the studying he's put in. I know he is under lots of pressure to get a great score so we can have more choices for his internship location. He tests like a champ though – I know he'll do great.

I wanted to share some Friday inspiration this morning – a few of my recent google reader stars. Hopefully most of these links are new to you!

    Inspired? I am.

Happy Friday! I hope the next nine hours go fast. We have a burgers & wine date night planned to celebrate the end of the test.

  • 2yearsinmd On August 6, 2007, I hopped on a plane and moved to Maryland to live with my boyfriend of a little over a year. We had spent approximately four weeks in the same zip code while nurturing our one year relationship and now we were going to live in the same apartment number.

We’ve learned from each other and grown together. He is my very best friend and the love of my life. Living on the East Coast away from our family and tight circles of friends has made us a unique island. We are stronger because of it and I think in many years will look back on these past two as some of the best.

    I love you P. You’re my favorite.

And TODAY we are busy. Paul has a big medicine test (Step 2 CK) tomorrow so his head is buried in books. And I am off bright and early to letterpress land. I have a custom stationery order to tend to and I am also working on some covers for a new minibook kit. Two years ago today I would have never thought this is the sort of work I would be doing. FUNNY (& awesome) how quickly things change.

Happy Thursday! (AND THANK YOU for the sweet words about our engagement photo. We are so excited to see the rest!!)

  • T-paul-elise-2-thumb Last night, Lisa posted a teaser photo from our engagement session and I am quite sure if we had a cat it would have ran under the bed at my excited shout. I said this yesterday, but I am just thrilled to have a photo where you can't see our arms holding up the camera. To have a photo with a fantastic depth of field…OMG IT'S LIKE MAGIC. And don't get me started on the orange bridge. WE DIDN'T EVEN PLAN THAT.

I have said this before, but I am a big fan of the whole wedding planning process. It helps that we have so much time to pull it together and it also helps that my google reader is home to 15 wedding blogs that seem to update 20 times a day. I get to sift through all the ideas and star the ones that really work for us.

One thing I have been struggling with is the best way to do a guest book. The past few weddings I have been to have used pieces of paper that you write a note on and then stick in a box for the bride and groom to read later. I love it because it avoids the traffic jam at the signing table. I don’t love it because, well, I am a book maker. I would not feel right if there wasn’t a book on the table.

I have decided that I will be covering a screw post album in a similar style to the way my custom journals are made. (The photos will be ones from our engagement session and a few others that represent us.) The pages of the album will be cream and about 5×7. They do not have lines and more closely resemble a scrapbook than a guest book. I was hoping to provide a bit more direction than “a scrawl your signature in a ‘From all of us’ birthday card”, so I was thrilled when I saw this guest book idea on Style Me Pretty. Little envelopes! In gray! How perfect! Guests can sign business size cards, tuck them into a pre-mounted baby envelope and we’re all set. I can’t wait to get this guy produced.

Another item that I wouldn’t say we are struggling with, but I would mention as a topic of discussion are the ties for the groom/groomsmen. Orange, as you may have noticed, is a tricky color to get right. The tie in the photo is Banana Republic but it still isn’t quite what we want. I am passing this decision off to Paul. He’s the best at declaring what won’t work because it is “burnt orange” AND he’s the lucky guy that gets to march down the aisle wearing it.

One other wedding activity that we were able to check off the list last week was to start our gift registry at Crate&Barrel. It was quite the experience. For one thing, since I moved to Maryland and in with Paul, I have been talking about all the things that some magical day in the future we will register for. Paul has always followed up my comments with “Babe. I do not want to wait THAT LONG for [insert product here.]” Needless to say, we still "need" a pizza peel, a spice rack, a mixer, better towels, a Cuisinart, a waffle maker and a wok. So this is finally our opportunity to stock up on some items. But the thing about Paul and I is we are anti-clutter and (fairly) reasonable.  We took our register jobs seriously and spent a lot of time looking at items. Paul would say something like, “But babe, we don’t decant our wine.” and then I would respond, “Yes, but do you think that sometime within the next seventy years we might want to?” And then Paul’s eyes would glaze over. It could have been that he was overwhelmed by all the options but it’s more likely he was contemplating the hazards of living seventy more years with me.

Either way, I loved it. It was sort of like writing a Christmas list when you still believe in Santa Claus. And also very much like playing house. I can’t wait to get married.

  • IMG_2148 IMG_2151 IMG_2152 It's quite likely that even after we move I will still be re-arranging this wall in my head. I had to start from scratch today in order to add our new Ork poster. It's 11×17 and instead of having a custom photo mat cut, I just mounted it on a piece of $.49 posterboard and stuck it in an 18×24 inch frame. And then for more balance I printed out an ampersand on kraft paper. Because 1) I love ampersands and 2) I am pretty sure Pottery Barn does it all the time.

  • On Friday before we left Sacramento, Paul and I met with our photographers to shoot an engagement photo session. I have never really thought about taking engagement photos. BUT back in January, it seemed like tons of amazing engagement sessions started hitting the web. Artsy, romantic, funny, candid, stunning photos. Not the lame chin resting on a tree branch stuff. Also not the old "hold the camera at arms length and do your best to not look blurry/drunk/stink-eyed". I figured it was something that would be fun. Not a must do, but fun.

When I google searched and found our photographer, one of the items included in her packages was an engagement shoot. For sure we were going to do it now. Back in May, I scheduled July 31 for us to meet up at our favorite restaurant in Sacramento. We figured we would just play it by ear from there.

Paul and I met up with Lisa and Geoff (they’re photographer partners & engaged to be married on August 22!) and had a few cocktails before getting started with the session. I personally thank the cocktails for a little less awkward and a little more willing subjects.

I really had no idea what to expect. That’s a lie. I expected extreme awkwardness. But instead, I got a laid back experience and an overwhelming sense of love for Paul. After spending three hours close to him, talking softly to him, kissing him, hugging him and holding his hand I realized, WOW. I AM CRAZY ABOUT THIS MAN. Don’t get me wrong, I already knew that, but your deepest emotion gets a bit hidden in the non-romantic activities of the day to day. Your passion hides out just a little bit. It was so fun to bring that back. And Lisa and Geoff were just perfect at capturing us being us. I was blown away and cannot wait to see the photos.

Thanks Lisa & Geoff. And thank you, Paul for walking into this with me and standing by my side.

  • Promonaug3 Promonaug32 A few weeks ago, I bought a PLAY minikit from Jamaica. (it looks like they're sold out now.) I had it shipped to California and I played with it while I was home. I loved the fun small size that it came in, but I decided to use the pieces as part of a larger book based on the idea of PLAY.

I cut 12×12 papers in half (6×12) and folded them to make a 6×6 book. I stapled them together on the crease to hold it all together.
IMG_2133 I slid a ribbon between the staples and backed a photo with paper to keep it in place.
IMG_2134 IMG_2135 IMG_2136 A vellum envelope, left over from a mixed paper book holds a secret note to Paul.
IMG_2137 IMG_2138 IMG_2139 IMG_2140 I am sort of obsessed with lined paper for storytelling.

The month of July disappeared into thin air. It really went fast. This is partly because I spent only half of it home in Maryland and partly because there was a lot going on. I am sure I have mentioned this, but I will be spending a lot of time back in California these next nine months as we prepare for the wedding and Paul does out of town rotations for his last year of med school. I am fortunate that I can do my job anywhere that has internet access. It’s good news, given that the military will keep our little family hopping for the next 15 years.

When I look at my daily photos from the month, it looks like a giant vacation craft project. And it was. Lots of book making. Lots of assembly lines. Lots of great eats and travel. I like this. If I can spend every month making a crafty mess and visiting family, things will be good.

What’s in store August? I can’t wait to see.

  • I am so excited for someone else to hold the camera. 🙂
