I saw this tweet by Jordan Ferney of Oh Happy Day! a few weeks ago and haven't really gotten it out of my head since. I love the idea that if you want to grow your business, the only thing you can focus on is what you are doing. Nothing else matters. I remind myself to put my head down and work daily.

sidenote : I cannot thank you enough for the shop sales and workshop PDF downloads this week. Some times everything clicks and this job is like walking on air. And this past week has been one of the good ones.

  • IMG_2713

Making progress. Just a few additions these past few days, but two of them lend themselves well to videos. I'll walk you through the new pages below.

    IMG_2708

First, I added a BBQ invitation for my friend Megan's pharmacy school graduation. It was about 5×7 and I trimmed it down to 4×6.

    IMG_2709

On the backside, I added some handwritten journaling and attached a strip of patterned paper with adhesive and then machine stitched it down in white. I don't know what it is about the machine stitching, but it seems to "finish" off elements just enough that it's worth the hassle of sewing.

    IMG_2706
    IMG_2705

For the next page, I added a plastic sleeve with custom machine stitched "pockets."

summer minibook update #2 from elise blaha on Vimeo.

I filmed a video to explain how to make the pockets. Pretty simple and very flexible. You could do this on a larger scale or create all different sized pockets. If you don't have a sewing machine, you could accomplish something similar with hand stitching and embroidery floss.

    IMG_2704
    IMG_2711

And then I added the text from Sunday's currently post into the book. I filmed a second video to show how I got the text into PSE and then how I adjusted it to make it work for the album. Once I had it printed out, I ended up cutting it down to 2.75×6 inches and machine stitching it to the backside of the grid paper that's included in the album.

computer journaling in your summer minibook from elise blaha on Vimeo.

    IMG_2720

On the patterned side of that grid paper, I added a silhouetted photo of my popsicle from Monday. I like to silhouette simple shapes because it can give them a bigger impact. In this case, the neutral kraft grid serves as a great background. While I had the sewing machine out, I added lines onto that scalloped card. Ideally they will be a good place to add journaling about something.

    IMG_2722

And you might notice I used my actual popsicle stick in the book. That was more out of need than creativity. My fingers were holding the stick in the photo and it looked silly, so I chopped off the stick in the photo and substituted with the real one.

I hope seeing the process continues to be helpful! I am loving all the sharing because it's pushing my own creativity. I've got to step it up if I'm going to go into it in such detail. 😉

old navy simple maxi dress (I bought a blue one last spring and a black one this year. LOVE.), lululemon running key cuff (currently only available in store), sugar fresh lip balm, j.crew dorrie skirt (I need a 20% off coupon code asap.), mossimo supply co burnout tanks (super cute on), dolce & gabbana the one perfume, thief and bandit necklace, h&m shorts (which I somehow missed in store last week).

Super faves. Man, I love summer.

  • IMG_2663

Okay. I've hyped this room to no end. If you're curious as to what this room looked like before, click here. Basically, it was fun and cute, but nothing too original. And it's not that things are "original" now, but at least you can't find everything online. To me, it feels like it has a bit more style. It seems a bit more "Californian" for some reason (duh, the sunglasses) but also more modern? But also more 70's? This is why I am a craft blogger and not a decor blogger. I don't know the terms.

Either way though – I am really happy with the result. I am excited to spend the next eight months here.

    IMG_2665

So taking it wall by wall – Obviously the couch is the same. The end tables (one is actually a wine fridge) are the same. We are going to be changing out that table on the right this summer. My sister-in-law is making us a table like this wood one shown here. How cool is that?!? I can't wait to pick it up in July while I'm in Sacramento.

We made that coffee table and bought the rug on Amazon. Here's what I'll say about the rug : I love it. But it's like a pet. We call it "the dog" because it sheds like you wouldn't believe. I don't think Paul is sold on it, but at the end of the day, it was "free" with Amazon credit and I'm the only one who sweeps and vacuums. So that sort of solves that problem. And it's crazy soft. And awesome.

The pillow on the left is West Elm and I made the other one with the same fabric I lined the trunk with. I used the stripes to create a chevron pattern just like I did for the headboard. Came together pretty quick and I'm happy with the extra green.

    IMG_2666

Up on the wall we have the sunglass art I purchased a few months ago. They were in our bedroom but were way to cool to stay there. I love them out here. And if you're curious, everything that was on this wall is now leaning on top of our dresser in the bedroom and looks pretty decent.

    IMG_2650

The three wooden boxes were purchased at Michael's in Maryland when Paul and I first moved in together. We used them to store our DVDs. I love that a bit of stain and some drywall screws gave them new life. Various plants and vessels, a #2 (for the two of us) from Home Depot and a brass unicorn that I purchased on etsy to which Paul proclaimed, "Impulse buy much?" I made that CA art the same way I did the silhouettes that hang in our bedroom.

    IMG_2670

Window wall! I switched out the photo in that black frame on the right and hung it in a new spot. The "C" below is from Urban Outfitters. My married last name is "Cripe". While I'll probably always be "Elise Blaha" online, I've embraced the "C" in real life.

    IMG_2675

On the other side, I relocated the copper art and obviously added the "&" art. That framed piece in front is from this etsy shop. I LOVE it so much. Her work is just stunning.

    IMG_2677

Stripe wall! Sort of boring right here – just the TV really. But look how much cooler the TV looks on my antique trunk! Can't find that at Ikea! Check plus! Those guitars are an acoustic I bought Paul for his birthday and then the controller for Rockband 3. The door leads into our office.

    IMG_2684

Moving on to my favorite part – the dining nook. Here's the deal. The kitchen area was lacking seriously. And the stripes made all the difference in the world. Obviously the painted green chairs help too. The table cloth is from Williams Sonoma and the vase is from Crate and Barrel circa 2009.

    IMG_2687
    IMG_2691

On one wall I have a framed print from this great artist and one of my own flower prints in 11×14. On the other I hung a cubby display from Pottery Barn. It clearly needs some fillers. Right now, I just have a few place holders tucked in there. I like the idea of filling it slowly by picking up different items on vacations (but cool stuff – not tourist tschotskes). It has 25 cubby holes, so I plan on eventually using it as an Advent calendar every Christmas season when we have kids. I'll tuck a little note or present into each square and then we'd open one every day of December. Is that weird that it was the first thing I though of when I saw it? Cannot wait to be a parent.

So that's that! My photos are not great and the lighting is bad, but you get the idea. Different, right? Better, hopefully?

Let me know in the comments if you have any source questions I missed. I have tried to link to every DIY project – it's cool too see them all together. Thanks for taking look!

wearing white nail polish (from high school) on my fingers and toes.

excited about getting creative with the summer book over the next few months.

convinced the iPad + Kindle app is a winner.

working on this week's blog posts and PDFs of the blog 2.0 workshop.

    practicing being more flexible.

feeling better about my health and body than I ever have before.

happy that a few of my girls are just a short drive away.

noticing that when it rains it pours as far as projects are concerned.

hoping to hit the 10 mile run mark this week.

determined to hit the 10 mile run mark this week.

DUDES! I had promised a new living room post this week. But FAIL, I didn't get it together. Look for that MONDAY. What I do have though is a video. It's sort of an introduction to the summer mini books and then talks about how I made the first four pages of my book. Like I make them in real time on the video. It's of course long because things like time seem to get away from me when I record, but it might be helpful to see my "process." If you want to skip the intro where I give suggestions for getting started and just see me working on my own book, start the video at the 4m50s mark. I am hoping to share more videos like this throughout the summer as I work on this project. I hope you enjoy.

E : helllllllooooooooo Paul! If it's cool with you, I am going to ask you some questions and type furiously to get your answers. As you know, we tried video, and the awkwardness that was us together on video almost wiped out Planet Earth. So now we're back to a good old fashioned text interview.

    P : Phew, that is a relief.

E : SO! how are you? Please tell us about yourself.

P : Tell us about myself? I'm currently hungry. It's dinner time. I love my wife, cars and video games. Are you sure this is going to be good?

E : Yes, I am so sure. What is your job?

    P : Doesn't the dinner smell good?

E : So good. So seriously, what is your job?

P : Is that what you meant by "tell me about yourself?" My job? I am about to complete my year as a transitional intern at Naval Medical Center in San Diego. AKA, I'm a doctor in the Navy.

E : Rad. Are you excited about being done with internship?

P : Very excited slash excited about future residency opportunities.

E : Excellent. How do you feel about your upcoming deployment?

P : Enthusiastic because this is what I have been training for for five years now. And besides enthusiastic, cautious because I don't like the idea of being away from you for so long.

E : Yeah, me too. I will miss you. So… what is your favorite part of being married?

P : uhhhh, [insert inappropriate joke here] …I would say, companionship? But I don't know… it's difficult to describe marriage in a sentence.

E : Good call. I retract the question. Does it bother you that I talk about our life on the internet?

    P : No.

E : That's good. Also, we should have covered that years ago. If you weren't a doctor, what would you be?

P : I guess I would want to be a teacher. Although making wine sounds good too.

E : Seriously. Let's do that. …what else should we talk about?

    P : Whatever you want.

E : I had a few people ask about how you support me – because you do, you know. What would you say you do to support me creatively?

P : I would say that I understand and recognize that you have far more creative potential than I do about …everything. I let you run with ideas that I normally wouldn't run with because I know that you'll make them work when they would probably not work for me.

    E : Thank you.

    P : Um hmm.

E : What are the two top adjectives you would use to describe yourself?

    P : Faithful & diligent.

E : Ohh, good ones. What's the best show on television?

    P : The best show? … I would have to say Tosh.0.

E : Yeah. On TV, right now, that's probably the best. Unrelated, where do you see us in 10 years?

P : Working hard. Spending lots of time with family.

    E : How many kids?

    P : Two.

    E : What state?

    P : California.

E : Happier or less happy than we are now?

    P : Happier.

E : Sweet. I love you. Time for dinner?

    P : Yes.

…and that, Blogland, is five minutes with my favorite person on earth. — elise.

Here we go – general questions! You can see a Q&A on the shop & small business here and a Q&A on crafting and blogging here.

If you weren't running your own business, what else would you like to do?

This is the best question ever because I have no idea.

You know how little kids want to be things? Like ballerinas, astronauts, firemen, veterinarians, etc? I never wanted to be any of those things. All I remember wanting to do was to be a business women. I wanted to wear fancy suits and march into board meetings. I wanted to jet-set around the world and hire and fire people.

And now, I am a business women but in such a different world. And I cannot for the life of me figure out what else I would want. I want to be a mom, and hopefully I will able to still do what I do and that too. (And I'm a poet who didn't know it.)

I know you said that you were planning on going away while Paul is deployed. Do you know where you are going already or do you have a wish list? If so why are these places on the list?

I am planning on traveling while Paul is deployed. I am going to spend a few weeks in July with my parents using their garage and wood from our old fence to build stuff. Then, at the end of August, I am going to visit some college friends in Chicago and NYC. And then hop up to Canada to stay with Kal. In October I am going to St. Louis to see a friend from high school. I am sure I'll spend Thanksgiving & Christmas with family, but hopefully somewhere fun, not just at home.

I am dreaming about going to Europe or something too, but I don't know if that will work out.

Are you two planning any vacations in the near future?

We are! We are going to Palm Springs at the end of June to lay by a pool and drink and eat. I am so excited.

After deployment… hmm, we'll have to do some good stuff quick because I am going to be even more baby crazy than I am now.

Have you done anything lately on any of your lists, like your birthday list? Does your husband have any lists? Is he as creative, artistic and organized as you?

I don't have a birthday list this year, but I am completing 26 projects. I am making progress on my crazy new years resolutions too. Paul is not a list maker. At all. I don't know that the man has ever owned a calendar. He is creative, but I would not say artistic. He is crazy intelligent but not organized at all. His side of the office is basically 25 huge stacks of folded paper. Once a year, I go through his stacks and help him sort the junk from the real stuff. It's good times.

you should do a post on something you would do if you knew you couldn't fail. i'm a sucker for fun ice breaker-type questions 🙂

If I knew I could not fail… I would open a store TODAY. A real brick and mortar store complete with real stuff. (Some handmade and some not.) And I would write a cookbook with Paul. And I would ask Paul if he wanted to blow off everything else and go open a winery in Napa. And there would be a farm in the backyard.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

If I could wave a magic wand, in ten years we would be in Southern California (though we might have left already) and living in a real house complete with a yard. By then Paul would be settling into his job and his schedule would be less intense. We would have three little ones but probably no pets. And all of our family would be closer to us.

And I would still be blogging. And my "Get Crafty" channel on TV would be super successful.

This is a completely personal question, so I understand if you wouldn't feel comfortable answering it. I'm curious, though, how you and Paul have navigated married life and money. My fiance and I are in the beginning stages of this. He's working, and I'm in grad school, and I really have no idea how we're going to manage the whole money thing. Will I always have to feel guilty about buying a new pair of pants? Because that would be sad…

Paul and I share all of our money. We lived together for three years before we got married and then we had separate accounts, but now it's all joined. (Except I have a separate business checking account.)

Money is a BIG DEAL. I think you have to talk it over often. Both people have to express concerns and no one should ever feel guilty. I would just be open and honest and see where you both stand. At first I worried that I was going to feel like a fool contributing my meager earnings to our accounts but that would be a very long time of feeling like a fool, so I got over it.

What do you do when you can't fall asleep at night?

I get super annoyed. Sometimes I picture the color orange and try to just keep only that in my brain. Sometimes I get up and read blogs/twitter/the internet and try again to sleep in half an hour.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?

A tiny vacation with Paul before he deploys. Making something new out of wood. Running on the bike trails in my old neighborhood in Sacramento.

Have you ever had pen pals?

Yes, but I am pretty bad at it.

Do you read fiction? If so, what are some of your favorite fiction books?

All the time. My most favorite book is The Time Traveler's Wife. And Harry Potter, of course.

How often do you get your hair trimmed/cut?

    Every 2-3 months.

Who is your favorite comedian, if you have one?

    Daniel Tosh, hands down.

How's about a post about keeping yourself motivated? And doing the fun and the not so fun stuff (cleaning, for me) without procrastinating for too long. : ) Cos for me, it's easy to say I am inspired but it is hard for me to actually take that inspiration and do something with it. Ya dig?

I did a pretty in-depth post about motivation here but one thing I have realized recently is that I just have to be in The Zone. For example, sometimes I can clean my whole house from top to bottom in a few hours without it feeling like work and other times the idea of just grabbing the broom makes me what to cry. So basically, I think when you have the energy, you just have to dive in and tackle it. RIGHT AWAY. Before the gigantic-ness of the project overwhelms you or your email notifier dings. And once you have momentum, don't stop until you have to.

what you wish you could tell yourself 4 years ago?

You're doing the right thing. Keep going.

how you mainly keep in touch with family/friends that don't live where you live (email? phone calls? skype? good old fashioned snail mail?)

I hate the phone with a passion. Seriously. It's awkward how much I don't get along with the phone. So email is my number one go to. I communicate with friends via email. I have a group of 8 college girlfriends and we send email "chains" every week or so which are just random dumps of information. It helps so much to keep us in the loop and feel like real friends even though we are spread out across the country.

I talk to my parents on the phone every couple days. They always put me on speaker so the three of us can chat. Sort of chaotic, but good. I don't mind the phone with them. Oh, and when Paul is gone we chat via gmail video. Love that.

And I also send cards. And communicate a ridiculous amount via twitter. (Longest answer ever.)

in all the years (yes years) i've been following you, i don't remember you ever really doing a blog about your music interests.. what do you listen to while you craft? run? etc?

I think I have never posted about this because I am not a big music person. (Gasp.) I always feel like that is the most embarrassing thing to admit. Sort of up there with saying you have a tail. But I do listen & like music it's just that I am not a big "Oh I just discovered this great band" type of person. I normally have random stations on Pandora, and it changes so much. I'm the girl that hears a song in a commerical, Googles the song and then sets a Pandora station around that song.

I also like to work with TV on in the background – I basically watch Arrested Development on a loop. I usually run with Paul, so no music, but I am just getting into Podcasts (very slowly, I think I have listened to one) and I liked that.

Your life and business always seem so together and flow seamlessly. Do you ever have days where everything is out of sorts and/or business related creative roadblocks? Days where you question if self employment and crafting as a business were the right choice for you? If so, how do you get around/over it?

It's wierd because my life and business are so connected. I think without my blog where I share my personal life my business life wouldn't really exist. But I hit creative roadblocks all the time. At least thirty times in the last year I have convinced myself that I am out of ideas. It's over. The stream has dried up. But then I remind myself that I've been here before and I'll be here again. It's all ebb and flow. That's comforting.

I can say for sure though, that I never doubt this path. I have worked a lot of jobs and none come close to the joy of working for myself.

    Dottedline

Whew! It took me a long time to finally post answers – you probably forgot you asked! As I was going through them again, I remembered how many people wanted to know my favorite blogs, those are detailed here. Thanks for reading.
