This was an incredibly fun photo walk – probably my favorite so far. I love the play of light and shadow and I love that "magic hour" right before sunset.

As always, please feel free to do your own photo walk. Use "light" as a prompt or anything else you can dream up. Keep the focus on just one thing though for a challenge.

All photos this time around were taken with Canon XSi around 7pm. ISO was set at 100 and I used manual focus (and then didn't do any focusing) for a few of them. See all photo walk posts here.

Week 28 and I still love this project.

More of the same…filling each week with mostly photos and then journaling (a lot that needs to stay private this week) on top.

    Plwk28left

Fun to see the tomato get redder and redder in the same spread.

    Plwk28right

I spent some time this past week going through old photos and I realized the ones I LOVED most were the totally imperfect ones of Paul and I. So fun to have those from the past five years. Making a resolution to start including a photo of the two of us (self portrait, timer, iPhone, whatever) into each spread for the rest of the year.

    Plwk28detail

Fun quote from Paul on our Saturday run … had to include that on a trimmed down library card.

    On to the next!

supplies / Paper Source circle label, Martha Stewart & Avery labels, Hambly patterned paper, Elle's Studio date flap, Hello Forever badges, Design A page protectors (which are available in this variety pack),  Clementine core kit, Bebas quote font. I use a Fiskars corner rounder (it's not amazing, but it's lasted the longest of any corner rounder I've ever had). I am using a Zig Millennium 0.1 pen and Recollections glossy marker throughout this album.

  • Barsign
    Jalapenococktail

While Paul and I were in San Francisco last month, we had dinner and drinks at a great restaurant called Chambers. The coolest thing in there was the BE AMAZING bar sign. The second coolest thing was a cocktail. There were about ten drinks on the menu and the last one was "bartenders choice." I asked for that and it was perfection. Jalapeño vodka (she used Jalapeño Stoli), lime juice, cucumber and ice. Stirred. That's it.

We played around with it and created our own version at home. We're calling this our summer cocktail.

To make : Obtain jalapeño vodka (or make your own*). Add the juice of half a lime and 1 oz of the infused vodka into a large glass. Stir (or shake) with ice. Pour liquid and ice into your cocktail glass. Squeeze cucumber juice (this is sort of tricky and works with larger cucumbers) into the glass and drop in the pieces. Add a splash of soda water. Taste it! You might want to add a half teaspoon of simple syrup or agave nectar OR, you may think it's just perfect.

    Enjoy!

    Happy, happy weekend.

*there are 100s of ways to infuse your own, but this is what we did: cut three jalapeños in half lengthwise. Carefully remove all the seeds! Drop them in a glass jar. Pour a bottle of vodka into the jar. Secure the lid and let sit in a dark cupboard for 72 hours. After three days, check on your jar. Taste test! Spicy enough? Great! Remove the jalapeños and carefully pour the liquid back into your vodka bottle. You're good to go.

An extremely organized office, red tomatoes, new plants & so much top-secret project process. Yes, that sums up my week nicely. We're racing through July and I'm not wishing away a day.

Check back this afternoon for a fun summer cocktail recipe.

  • Chemex

For the past few months, I have shared photos of our Chemex coffee maker here and on Instagram and I've been getting a few questions about it. I have been putting off writing this post because I am so not an expert on coffee OR methods of brewing. So first and foremost, if you're curious about this coffee maker, I want to direct you to the Chemex website where they can do important things like tell you it's history, share instructions and discuss why it's "superior" to other coffee makers.

We became interested in buying one after we had some fantastic drip coffee from Blue Bottle Coffee in San Francisco. Paul did the research, I highly approved of the Chemex's sleek design, and we ordered an 8 cup coffee maker and filter squares from Amazon.

    Chemex3

So far, our experience has been pretty awesome. The coffee tastes great. It's never bitter or burnt and thanks to the filters is free of grind particles and undesirable oils and fats. We love that it's all one piece and super easy to clean. I love that it looks nice on our shelf. I was so happy to get rid of our big bulky electric machine and free up some much appreciated counter space.

But there are some downsides – unlike an electric coffee maker, you can't set it up, press a button and then come back in 10 minutes to brewed coffee. You have to pour (and pour and pour) the hot water into the top portion, wait for it to drip through a bit and then pour more. It's a pretty hands on morning project.

    Chemex2

Because there is no heating element, once the coffee is completely brewed, it doesn't keep itself warm. (Though leaving the filter in place after brewing does help keep heat from escaping.) This would be a bummer if you often go back for more coffee throughout the morning. Usually, we go through our coffee pretty quickly so it's not a big deal. We each drink a mug together with breakfast and then Paul takes a second cup for the drive to work and I take a second cup upstairs to work.

    Chemex4

I highly recommend reading the instructions for more information on using the Chemex, but for fun, we filmed a little video last week with my iPhone so you can get the feel for it. I want to point out that we just use our normal tea kettle to boil water and then pour over the grounds. This would not be recommended because the spout it too large and too much water falls into the top portion at a time. Eventually, we'll probably upgrade to a more "made for Chemex kettle" but right now, this is working well enough.

If you've been curious, I hope that helps a bit! Let me know if I (or more likely Paul) can answer more questions.

sidenote – this post was not in any way, shape or form sponsored by Chemex. I just wanted to share our experience.

  • Newoffice

I spent today and yesterday in major reorganization mode. Not a box, drawer or shelf in my office was safe. I went through and recycled, trashed and piled for donations. I'd say I cut the "stuff" down by at least 30%.

Biggest achievements – putting 600 old 4×6 photos into albums, removing the rug that was just collecting dirt and paper scraps, sorting through all the fabric & paper, clearing more workspace, reorganizing my clipboards, getting some art framed and utilizing my cubby display for rubber stamp and art supply storage.

It feels like a new space and I'm super inspired.

  • Bedroom

Oh man, this room. It's been the item on my to-do list that I pushed back and back and back until finally, it started to look like we'd move again before this space became anything but a dumping ground for extra frames, curtain rods in boxes, random storage pieces and, obviously, dirty clothes.

    Bedroom4

The number one reason for my hang-ups and hemming & hawing is that the room is huge. I know. Too much space? That's not a complaint anyone wants to hear. But really, it's gigantic. About double the amount of space that a bedroom (with a queen bed & a dresser) really needs. Plus, the ceilings are slanted and at the tallest point are very high. Which is rad, but also adds to the cavernous feel and made this an overwhelming space to conquer.

    Bedroom2

I came up with the plan to paint a stripe around the room early in the game (like last December) but failed to execute until early June. I went with a two foot stripe because I felt like it would help "ground" the room and lower the portions a bit. And WOW – did the room need some color.

    Bedroomdresser

It also took six months to realize that pulling the dresser out into the room instead of pushing it against the wall could help close off the space. It acts as a natural divider and really cozies up the bed area. It's also an efficent hider. We share the drawers right down the middle on the teal dresser, but Paul has an extra, smaller dresser from Ikea that holds all his work clothes. That hidden nook keeps that out of sight and also hides the laundry basket. (For the record, we have a decent sized walk in closet off the bathroom for more clothes and shoe storage.)

    Bedroomcurtains

It was nice to finally get the curtains up. I bought the curtain rod the weekend we moved in, but was waiting to buy curtains until I new what color the stripe would be. In the end, I realized it would be cheaper and the patterns would be better if I went with tapestry fabric from Urban Outfitters and made them myself.

    Bedroom10

I cut the tapestry right down the middle and added to the top loops of ribbon from Paper Source. They look so thin in the photos – and they are – but when the blinds are shut and the curtains are pulled, our room is much darker than it used to be in the mornings (those windows face east). They were a necessary addition to the room for sure. When I first started painting and planning, I thought I would have to make a new quilt to match the space, but happily, our current one was neutral enough to work.

    Bedroom5

Originally, I was open to recovering that headboard, but in the end, the white and black accents worked out well. I am still on the lookout for a good bedside table for Paul – thankfully, he's not picky and has no need for a bedside lamp.

    Bedroomart

I kept the walls pretty clean and simple considering how much space I have. For the most part, I centered all hanging art inside the stripe, except for the sunglass art which peeks out above the line.

    Bedroomplants6
    Bedroomplants

I brought in a lot of plants. But because I am addicted, I could so easily bring in more. I'd love to fill the space by the window with more hanging plants and I am on the lookout for an inexpensive (possibly thrifted) plant stand.

    Bedroomlast

It would also be awesome to add a reading chair and table to that window area, but it's totally impractical. We have seating all over this crazy house and because we have no idea how big our next place will be, buying too much extra furniture isn't a great idea.

    Bedroom3

Right off of the room is the master bath area with our sinks and closet to the left. Straight back in the photo aboe is the toliet and shower. Just like in our last apartment, I took the closet & bathroom doors off and hung more Urban Outfitters tapestry fabric in each of those doorways.

    Bedroom6

And that's that! The room that took seven months to create. Our house is SO close to done… I can hardly believe it. This place, more than any of our previous homes, has a legit flow throughout. I think I am finally working out the style that is most us.

  • Dreamcatcher
    27MATERIALSribbon
    Ribbon2

Every since I found this gorgeous photo (and tutorial!) via Pinterest, I knew I'd be using "ribbon" to make a dreamcatcher. The other day, I found a gold hoop at Jo-anns and decided to make it happen.

    Ribbon

I took three differnent types of ribbon (all from Paper Source) and just wrapped them around the hoop – taking care to weave them through each other as I went. I secured the thick patterned ribbon with staples and used fabric glue on the thinner ones until I realized I could just tie them off into the tails.

    Dreamcatcher2

To the bottom, I secured seven strands of ribbon and and strung them with glass beads from an old necklace that sadly had broken. Because I had most of the stuff on hand, this was my cheapest project yet – just $2 for that gold hoop. It's currently hanging on fishing wire from our fan (low enough not to burn in the lights or get tangled when the fan is on.)

    Dreamcatcher3

I cannot say for sure if it's caught any dreams as of yet, but it makes me smile to see it hanging there. And fun news! I'll be sharing our COMPLETELY DECORATED bedroom on the blog tomorrow.

(click to enlarge & the images above will be [somewhat] clearer)

Pretty standard left page this week and then a big photo cut down on the right. Almost all the photos this week were taken with my iPhone. Cannot get over how great the camera is on the 4s.

    Plwk27left

    Left side is ALL photos.

    Plwk27detail3

Usual suspects with wrapped labels and little journaling spots.

    Plwk27insert2

I added an insert to tell that shoe story. I cut down a Design C pocket page and put a 4×6 photo in the top slot and then my journaling, broken into 2 4×6's in the bottom two.

    Plwk27insert3

On the backside I added three 4×6 photos – all which feature circles.

    Plwk27insert

To the outside of the page protector, I added a circle label and Amy Tangerine "3" chipboard thicker. I handwrote the text "good things".

    Plwk27right

The right side is one of my favorite pages ever. This beach shot was an iPhone photo that I processed with Instagram.

    Plwk27detail2

I added some text about the weekend in PSE and then printed the photo at home in pieces (using the method shared in the video in this post).

    Plwk27detail

I am very happy with how this week turned out.

supplies / Paper Source circle label, Martha Stewart & Avery labels, Studio Calico patterned paper, Elle's Studio date tab and circle tag, American Crafts letter sticker, Design A & Design C page protectors (which are available in this variety pack),  Clementine core kit, Bebas quote font. I use a Fiskars corner rounder (it's not amazing, but it's lasted the longest of any corner rounder I've ever had).
