BABYgear

photo of Ellerie by Tara Whitney

The plus side of the second kiddo is that you're over all the "extras." There is a better understanding of needs vs. frills. I bought super bizarre things for Ellerie (like so many sets of pjs and then she slept in onesies and sleep sacks) but I also stupidly skimped on things that really would have made our lives better. (See below.)

So this post is going to share some of that. I've broken it down into hopefully helpful categories. Yays, Nays and Big Mistakes.

WHAT WE LOVED :

WHAT WE NEVER USED :

  • a baby monitor. I bought one, but she's just down the hall and we never used it once. Plus, I realized I don't want to hear every tiny sound. I want to hear the loud sounds. (Obviously we didn't do a video monitor either.)
  • all those cute PJs
  • so many cute dresses (this is just me I think. Most people probably love dressing their kiddo up. I kept things very simple and can't imagine I'll switch gears this time.)

WHAT WE SKIPPED (AND WILL SKIP AGAIN) :

  • pacifiers (just never offered and don't plan to this time)
  • wipe warmer
  • bottle warmer
  • anything fancy to make baby food
  • a diaper bag (I had a zippered pouch packed with a change of clothes, three diapers and wipes that I threw into my purse when we went out – it stays in the car now that Elle is older).

WHAT WE MISSED OUT ON LAST TIME :

  • a comfy rocking chair. This was my biggest mistake. I should have bought a comfy rocker long ago and I am so glad we finally got this one.
  • a newborn friendly stroller. Not having a newborn stroller was my second biggest mistake. We have a BOB Revolution (which we LOVE) but didn't get a carseat attachment and therefore had no stroller option for the first 3 months. I seriously don't know what the hell I was thinking but I am sure that not getting outside contributed to my post-partum sadness. This will not happen again and we are looking at double stroller options (and have heard great things about this Mountain Buggy one!)
  • a wrap carrier. I had this one, but didn't take advantage of it. I'll try again with this baby.
  • a hands free pumping bra (I pumped exclusively for nine months and never bought one of these. There are no limits to my WTFs on this.)

Baby "necessities" are so arbitrary. I read some lists of must-haves and they are items that totally didn't work for me. And then I read other lists and I'm like "are you kidding?! you left off the only thing that got me through those first two months." So really, it's a crap shoot. All you need is love. And perspective. And a bit of red wine.

The wraps look much more comfortable than other carriers imo. I never had to use one because well, I’m in a wheelchair, so my kiddo sat/sits on my lap instead of being carried. There are a lot of videos of different ways to wrap though, and a whole community of women online who are diehard baby wrappers. (Don’t judge my rabbit holes of the internet, ha!)
Also, the hands-free pumping bra. GET IT. Saved my sanity.
    Good luck!

Elise, this is pretty much exactly spot on. My two are 6 and 3 now, but my list for the second was pretty much exactly the same, and we were quite happy. We went with the old Graco sit and stand for our two seater stroller, but I tell you what, I always regretted not getting a jogging stroller. I think (had I bought it earlier) I would use it even now.
Also, grandma and grandpa bought us a radio flyer wagon. The kind with two seats and seat belts. I was so skeptical, but as soon as my youngest was sitting up independently, it became our favorite ride. Rolls through a variety of terrains pretty easily. Great for pretend play. Now they’re each over 50 pounds and that wagon is still quite maneuverable on our half mile walks to the park.

You know, I’ve held my pump stuff up a few times at work when I left my bra at home…I can’t imagine doing it for 9 months straight and being an exclusive pumper! Wowzers!
Ah, one thing that we did buy and I’m glad we didn’t buy more of, was stuff for homemade baby food. I was going to go all gung-ho with making it all but my son (almost 11 months now) turned out not to want to eat a lot of food until just in the last month and so I have really relied on pouches and jars. Turns out, making baby food has been one of the last things I’ve wanted to do.
There are some really cute homemade suck pads for the Ergo on Etsy.

We got a double bob stroller with a car seat attachment for number 2 and it’s awesome, it’s like having a 3rd car, but it handles so well (also, a bit of a tight squeeze to get through the checkout at the grocery store-so think about that if you walk to the supermarket). You can cut holes in a sports bra for hands-free pumping!

Double stroller: I highly recommend Phil&Teds! The arrangement is similar to the mountain buggy one you linked to, but you have the ability to attach a car seat for the baby. We have the Dot and are in love. It has a small footprint for such a versatile stroller!

I don’t have kids of my own yet, but I’ve been a babysitter for about 6 years, and “had” many children in various ages. I can’t even imagine life without a stroller, especially in the first 6 months. Those walks are the best. I’ve recently fell in love with the baby carrier. It’s the best for a 7-month old who get’s annoyed laying down in a stroller, but tired sitting. I’ve been skipping the stroller for over a month and it’s made my job so much easier. The baby seems to like it as well.
I feel so blessed to get so many baby tips from different families before I have my own. It’s fun to see all the different systems people use.

That is a really cool double stroller! I have a mountain buggy duet. Its slimness was the selling point for me. I’m on public transportation all day so feeling like I’m not taking up the whole Bart car is nice. Mountain buggy also has great customer service. My stroller was delivered with a hole in the tire and they sent another one right away.

Loved the link to the double stroller. That is my one item for baby two I cannot decide on. We walk daily in the warm months (Minnesota life), but I plan to visit the mall for walking indoors lots too so I know this will be such a huge decision. I went through 3 strollers with my first before finding the perfect one. Would love to know if you end up getting this one or if you find others that you are considering too.

It’s so interesting to see what works for different people! I’m expecting baby girl #2 in ~6 weeks and…I haven’t bought a darn thing yet. Ha! I do plan to buy an Ergo (had a Baby Bjorn the first time around and hated it) but that’s about it. Everything else can still be reused, thankfully!
And OMG howwwww did you pump for that long without a hands-free bra?? I can’t even imagine! Definitely DEFINITELY get one.

Great insight. My two cents: get outside as much as you can. It will be tough with the second one (sometimes we wouldn’t be ready to leave the house till 11!) but once you are out its like magic. The sun, the fresh air, the grass… Everyone calms down. So definitely plan for it. We were out as soon as I could walk comfortably (one week postpartum I think) we went to the store, the park. I think it was the year I watched the most sunsets!
    All the best

I didn’t get outside in the newborn days either (my daughter was born in February and we live in rural Indiana) and had a lot of sadness also. I didn’t enjoy my maternity leave much. Anyway, I wanted to give you a heads up on these if you haven’t seen them…I pumped for 8 – 10 months at work, three times a day, plus once in the morning at home and I didn’t use a pumping bra, just this strap thing. It just coils up to fit in the pocket of the pump bag and I just put it on over my clothes. It was awesome. http://www.amazon.com/Simplicity-Hands-Free-Pumping-Bra/dp/B00GDJRQPY/ref=sr_1_1?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1437666621&sr=8-1&keywords=hands+free+pumping

Your lists look so similar to what I would also say (my boys are 2 and almost 7 months). We try to keep things pretty simple, it’s been wonderful to put things to use a second time around and I love comparing photos of my first and second wearing the same onesie (it NEVER gets old!). The hands free pumping bra will change everything! I also love using a rented Medela Symphony, I have found it to be much more comfortable and quicker than the Pump in Style that I used. So excited for you!

I love how straight-shooting you are with this! Tucking this advice away for the future.
I went to a community screening of a film about postpartum anxiety/depression (Dark Side of the Full Moon), and it was fabulous. I didn’t realize it’s the number one complication of pregnancy- crazy. One of the best things was the group discussion that happened after the film. One woman made the point that it can better be referred to as “postpartum adjustment”- it encompasses so much more of women’s experiences that way, especially because it doesn’t always look like what we traditionally think of as depression. Super interesting.

Having a second gave me the opportunity to be the parent of a newborn I was so happy to be. Of course the first was so special and sweet, but so much harder than it needed to be. The second came home and just fit right in. And we were able to roll with the punches 🙂

Such a good list! For me, I really, really, really struggled with breastfeeding my first son (seriously, why does NO ONE tell you how hard breastfeeding is at first?) and the only thing that got me through was my Boppy pillow. Seriously I took that thing everywhere with me and dragged it out each time to nurse for months. I needed something for the baby to rest comfortably on (besides just my lap because then I had to lean forward too much) while I wrangled my boobs, haha! But then a friend of mine at the same time HATED her Boppy so you just never know!
So excited for your baby number #2!

Oh oh but I have to recommend the Brest Friend nursing pillow! I am so much less comfortable without it, I used it every single time I nurse and even have the inflatable travel version for when we travel. They are less than $40 and I can’t imagine not having it. I found that the Boppy would move too much and not position the baby right for me. I brought my Brest Friend to the hospital for the birth of my second son because I knew how much better it was with it!

Totally get you. With baby #2 it is so much easier to know what things you’ll really need & use. Don’t be surprised if part way in, your list suddenly changes :O) just go with it and remember all babies are different and you’ll be different too, because of Ellerie.

I have 3 kids(12, 9 and 5) and I use the baby monitor now. I never used it when they were babies because like you they were down the hall. Now I use it when they are sick. They can be in bed and just say my name and I will be at their bedside. I am really glad I did not get rid of it with all the other baby stuff. Nice list.

I agree on the wrap carrier, I adore mine (it’s a moby) I didn’t even use a pushchair (stroller) till my second baby was about 6 month old, it was so much easier just to carry him, and he was happier close to me.
Wow you exclusively pumped for 9 months?! What a rock star, hopefully things will be easier for you second time around.

Great list! Very similar to where we were for #2 minus the pumping stuff, (had to pump due to work with #1, exclusively breastfed with #2 since I was at home and she wouldn’t take a bottle). The one thing we ended up using that I was like WTF, since we have a very small house, is the video monitor. Never had one with our oldest but younger would do crazy gymnastics along with trying to crawl out of the crib on a regular basis while falling asleep so I wanted to keep an eye on her. Also there is a cool voice option on the one we have so if she is up playing a little too long I can gently talk to her and ask to her lie down without having to go in…Congrats again on baby girl #2! You always have a great eye for products. =)

I seriously have no idea how you exclusively pumped without a hands free bra. I seriously struggled to even turn on the pump without it lol. Plus I had some crazy places I pumped in including the car so it was necessary haha.
I basically agree with all the things you said except I love love my video monitor. I completely agree with you that I don’t want to hear the little things so I started putting it on mute once my son was sleeping through the night pretty regularly. I found it was nice to know if he was fussing whether it was lying down fussing or standing up fussing etc. I also like going in the morning before he starts actually crying and I’m telling myself that helps him chill out for longer because he doesn’t have to cry to get me to come in. #thingswetellourselves

I was the same way with the pacifier. My first son couldn’t be bothered with it. I was all YES! Then when my second son came along I was all No Paci! Well he showed me. Now at three we are now starting the discussions of the Paci Fairy. I am thankful for it believe it or not because he was a bit colicky and besides me walking nonstop with him, the pacifier worked at soothing. So don’t rule out anything on the never used list. You just never know what that little personality needs and you might find yourself at walgreens at 10pm buying out their entire pacifier stock…not that I know that from personal experience. 😉 I’m excited for you, Paul & Ellerie!

Ahh, you are the best! Loving this list and your last paragraph commentary, especially the ending. Having a funny flash back to your very first glass of wine photo on Instagram as a new (breastfeeding) mom. I delivered my daughter 7 days after you, was also breastfeeding, and finally felt comfortable around that time to indulge in some mama time, too. I remember seeing that pic thinking “well deserved, mama!” Then I started reading the comments and couldn’t believe the uproar it caused. People are nuts. Looking forward to seeing all of the craziness that happens after your second go-around 😉

was really simpler for the second child. For the first we think we need so many things, but in fact, we don’t. and from my side I was so much relaxed for the second, less tired, I did not think it was going to be that easy:) My daughter was 4,5 when her brother was born so it helped that she can manage many things by herself too. (even if she went back to be a baby from time to time!). But no matter how you manage the situation, the first child is always jealous for a period. We took really special care of the elder when we had her brother but it is inevitable. Now they’re 6 and 18 months, and eyes behind my back would be useful !

My two have a similar age gap to what your two girls will have and we found the Mountain Buggy Duet was fantastic as they were next to each other so felt ‘equal’ and as they got older chatted to each other which was the sweetest! The inline (one in front or behind of each other) didn’t work as well as the newborn got older as one was always relegated to the back and couldn’t see/be part of it. The Duet was still narrow enough to get through doorways. Just our experience, as you said, everyone’s is different. Enjoy having two (I know it’s awhile off but it’s going so fast!), it’s a joyful juggle!

Holy moly, I think I would have literally not survived the first 3 months without a stroller. That stroller was my savior. Take that fussy baby, pop him in the stroller, regain sanity. We even walked in rain a couples times (sprinkles, mostly) because you do what you have to do 🙂
Loved my wrap until the babe got big enough for the Ergo. I always had trouble trying to use it while out and about, because the ends drag on the ground while you’re wrapping up. But then someone finally told me, “put it on before you leave the house!” Umm, duh, why didn’t I think of that?!
And you made it through 9 months without a hands-free pump bra? I can’t even. I just can’t. even.

I use two hairties on each side to pump handsfree (you also need a nursing bra). I attach the ties a little different than in the image above (around the neck, via the vertical back – image-google it; it is so easy!)
If it were available for my country, I would buy freemies though. They have their own pump, but also compatible-with-other-pumps-cups.

Loved this when I had twins when my second was 1 1/2.
Ask people who have used both inline and side by sides. I was surprised when the inline my husband and I painstakingly researched did not work in the long term. Even the sorter ones are better for size in the early days, the kid in the back argument is not fun later on.
Though I used the twin baby valco with the tri mode seat since I had 3 kids to tote around, it’s function as a double is second to none. There is a bar for the infant seat to attach but also functions really well with toddlers.
Wheel support with bigger kids, and seeing as you are one to out a lot of miles on yours, especially on outdoor terrain, is a huge thing down the road and so much more important than the fold up function and overall weight of the stroller for folding up,to put in the car. I made that mistake at first and though yes, a light weighted easy fold up seems awesome, great wheels by far ended up being more important in the long run. Besides mamas of 2 (or more) have strong arms by evolution 😀

So not sure how this would work for you with two kids, or if at all, but we loved our Snap n’ Go stroller when our daughter was a baby. Just grab the carseat, snap it in and go. I could fold/unfold with one hand, it’s super lightweight and it totally doubled as a shopping cart because there was storage underneath. We saved our giant Britax stroller for outdoor walks, and used the more compact Snap n’ Go to run errands because of its convenience.

I’ve been pumping exclusively with my son for the past 4 1/2 months (he’s almost 6 months now, and I painstakingly tried breastfeeding for a month before begrudgingly admitting defeat), and I use the same hands free bra. Total game changer. Because I typically had to pump the same time I fed him (in the beginning), this thing was invaluable. My advice- GET TWO! It’s nice to have a second one while the other is washing/drying after getting dirty (and smelly- it’ll happen). And then when the second one is clean, you can stuff it in your bag so you’ll always have one on hand. Also, if you use a nursing bra, I found that this hands-free bra works best with unpadded nursing bras (My favorite ones came from Walmart surprisingly). The padded ones just get in the way, creating a not-so-tight seal, and an inevitable mess.

Love this post! I’m gearing up for baby number two right now too and I found myself nodding through a lot of this. One thing we didn’t plan on getting was a bottle warmer though and we ended up getting one a few weeks in because I would pump before I went to bed and my husband would take the first night feeding so I could get a little R&R before I had to breastfeed again. He said the bottle warmer was a life-saver! I’m curious though, what did you use the sheepskin rug for? Was it just for a little extra softness to have when the baby was doing tummy time?
