In February 2014 when we baptized Ellerie, Paul and I were talking to the pastor (the same guy who married us four years prior) about how tough it was to "balance" work and parenthood. I'm paraphrasing, but he said something along the lines of:

"I know. It always seemed strange to me that the decade where we are busiest at our jobs is often the same decade that we're starting a family."

"YES!" I remember thinking. "You get it!"

I wouldn't change where we are for anything. If I could go back and do it again, I wouldn't wait to start having kiddos until our "careers were settled." I wouldn't wait to dive into my career until my "kids were grown." Because first of all – I have no idea where my career is headed. And second of all – I am technically "grown" and my parents still help me constantly. Safe to say you can't "finish" either of those races. 😉

Which brings us to here.

Paul's finishing his final rotation of his second year of residency with a month of night and evening shifts. This is the year that I was warned about by one of the wives at the banquet last year. "Oh, second year… Not going to lie. That's the worst one." (Cut to me, chugging my cocktail.) During second year, the residents have a decent amount of responsibility but no seniority which makes for pretty intense shifts and pretty limited time spent at home. But we're at the end! Another few weeks and he's a third year. (Please tell me that means 1/3 of the work.)

Ellerie is amazing. Safe to say year two of parenthood blew year one out of the water (gross understatement). But the qualities that make her amazing are the same qualities that make her think climbing on the back of the couch is a great idea! I think she thinks her middle name is "CAREFUL!" As in "Ellerie!Careful!Getdownfromthereplease!"

I'm busy shipping and customer servicing and website updating and design planning and social media marketing and COOing. But it feels good. This whole process has felt like "hurry up and wait. Hurry up and wait." It's fun to be in one of the "hurry up" phases.

So yes. All the things. Not the least of which is an 18 week pregnancy. I joked on Instagram that if you want your pregnancy to go slow, send your husband on deployment. If you want your pregnancy to race by, start a business venture (or just have a toddler). Last time around I was counting up the weeks a day at a time. This time around I look up and realize we're nearly halfway there.

'Tis the decade, I guess. I am so happy to be here.

Balance is an illusion. A wise girl once said “Respect the ebb and flow”. As my husband and I are in the craziness of a large project we talk about how hard it is to SEE where we are right now. Clarity only comes in snippets and bursts. But when we CAN see it is super amazing that this is our life and it is exactly as we want it to be. We are on a rollercoaster and it is so much fun!

Both so true – and I don’t even have kids yet! I really appreciate you sharing what works for you on the parenting/personal life fronts.

I’m 36 weeks pregnant with my first and right before I got pregnant I took on the hardest and most challenging project of my career. Working long hours into nights and weekends made my pregnancy fly by! Today is my last day of work. I’m hoping these next couple of weeks fly by as I prepare for my daughters arrival.
So yes! I believe keeping insanely busy is the key to a fast pregnancy.

I was just thinking yesterday, when a vendor told me he is 33, that I don’t remember 33 at all. Not one bit. Nothing. Then I looked over and did the math. Oh, yeah. I wasn’t ever 33. I was a 3 month old, and then a 4 month old… I was curious, crying, up-all-night, teething, trying bananas, sitting up, learning to crawl, examining rocks, experiencing sand for the first time, loving the ocean, loving the breeze through cornstalks, laughing hysterically at Daddy… I was never 33, because I was living my first year again through my daughter. And it was also the year where my husband was an exec, so he was gone at least one week a month all year. My Mother in law told me, “This is the time where God gives you the energy for it and the sense to handle it”.

Elise, I don’t know if you have time to read these comments, but I just want to let you know I LOVE your GET TO WORK BOOK. I am one who has used planners of some sort for years. The quality of the pages, the simple yet full design is perfect. I see clearly even the smaller print as the font is simple and rich black. The monthly calendar is perfect, the Reflect and goal set page is so helpful with focusing my thoughts. I have nothing but good to say. Thank you for sharing your design with us. I’ve tried 4 kinds this year to see which would be best for me. YOURS WINS HANDS DOWN! I did punch it to fit in my A5 planner, but you have me as a returning customer. Again, I thank you.

Love this, Elise. I am in a great long-term relationship but have hemmed and hawed about getting married because I want to wait until I’ve gone to grad school/am more financially stable/have figured out my career and life. Not to say that I’m now going to get married tomorrow, but love the reminder that family and career are never “finished” to-do list items – you just have to live your life and figure it out as you go and sometimes that means a crazy decade or two.

Elise’s, I just bought TWO of your GTWBs (one for me and one for my husband), and I can’t wait for them to arrive!!! And I was thinking if you could show us a video of how YOU use your own GTWB for everyday life. I’d love to see exactly what you envisioned when you conceived that idea. I know that the book can be “anything I want it to be”, but I get really inspired by picking your brain. Do you think that could be possible? Maybe you could even start a post series!! 🙂

As doctors, I think sometimes we forget that our crazy schedules are just as hard on our family, if not harder. Good for you, for having such a lovely, inspiring attitude. Make sure that your husband appreciates you (I’m sure that he does!)
And thank you for your awesome daily planner! I have never been happy with any other planner, but I love this one!

The Radiology Bit…It’s going to get LOTS better! I feel safe (as the wife of nearly thirty years to a neuroradiologist) post-residency is even sweeter than it was when we began this journey. (Do attendings still tell residents…what you want and what your going to get are two different things?) Back then my hubby was the only neuroradiologist in an 850 bed hospital with a level one trauma center, that had the third busiest helicopter service in the country. If a resident had a question, he had no choice but to go in. It was insane…fast forward to present day. Teleradiology changed everything! Unless it’s a stroke protocol, or an emergency angiogram…it can all be handled via the computer in the family den. Your going to LOVE LOVE LOVE teleradiology!
