Okay, I hope you guys are ready to cook with some serious precision. 😉

We made these over the weekend and they were excellent. And easy. Perfect for summer BBQs. We got a grill pan like this one last summer and use it all the time but if you don't have something similar, you could wrap these in tinfoil, seal it tight and throw it on the grill. Just be sure to shake it up a few times (or stir the items in your grill pan) so things cook up evenly.

You will need :

  • 1 large sweet potato
  • olive oil
  • salt
  • pepper
  • minced fresh garlic (I used four cloves but I'm sort of addicted to garlic)

IMG_6749

Cut your sweet potato into thin strips. This part is a hassle (I would recommend using a rotary cutter sharp knife) and the thinner (more french fry like) the better. They obviously DO NOT have to be the same length, but same general thickness will help them cook up well.

Douse in a decent coat of olive oil (use your hands to really cover them). Some will drip off, so it's okay to go a little heavy here.

Add a good amount of salt and pepper and as much fresh minced garlic as you prefer.

Throw them in your grill pan (or tinfoil) and cook on the grill for about 20 minutes, stirring (or shaking) occasionally. We had our grill at about 400*F. Maybe after 20 minutes, try one and see if they need more time.

Enjoy!

Well, I just have to say, personally, I’m appalled by these fries. They’re really not on brand! Aren’t you all about healthy eating?

    You are amazing, Elise!
Now to convince my picky husband to try sweet potato fries…
(Related: have you ever tried sweet potatoe fries with cinnamon butter?! YUM. So good.)

I tried sweet potatoes only once and I didn’t like them at all. But I’ll try that with normal potatoes. It should work the same, I guess. That grill pan looks like something to invest into.

Elise, you are fantastic… sweet potato fries, quilts, and all! Thank you for helping me give up on my perfectionistic tendencies, which made things NO FUN FOR ANYONE… and to enjoy the quirks and special nuances of real creativity! Your blog is sunshine in my day… Keep going, awesome lady!! (and your mini-me is adorable to watch as she grows and explores with you!)

I thought your joke comment was a winner. I’m appalled that you would feel bad about leaving nasty comments, even fake ones.
Also I agree 100% about still feeling bad, but you know whatever. Humor.

Those fries look amazing! I’m learning the UK prefers thicker cut ‘chips’ over thinner, so some simple fry recipes are just what I need so I don’t have to compromise!

Hey- I really want to make these– but don’t have that cool pan. As for the tin foil- do you think they would ‘steam’ too much in there if its too tightly sealed? … I really don’t know- just wondering if you or anyone else has tried this method. Foil sure would be easy to clean after!

YES! These look amazing. I love when you share simple recipes. Do you guys still make grilled pizza for dinner pretty often? Do you ever make tacos at home? (I know you love going out for them!)
I’m sure you’re over thinking about it, but I love how you were able to make light of what happened yesterday. I laughed out loud at your Instagram post. I feel like your humour will get you through anything.
I hope you got EXTRA snuggled from e & paul last night.

Sweet potatoes with a side of snark are my favorite food 😉 But all joking aside, will have to try your method. We tried making them once in the oven and they were kinda mushy. Thanks for sharing!

Ooh, fun idea! My boyfriend and I bought a charcoal grill when we moved to an apartment with a little urban backyard. A grill pan would be a fun investment!
But I’m not sure how to use the rotary cutter on these, can you post a pic? 😉

It’s good to have a sense of humor about things. Also I love sweet potato fries. I also bake them in the oven in the winter, they come out pretty similarly.

Elise do you peel your sweet potatoes? We do find them in France but usually from pretty far away so I don’t really feel like keeping the skin on not knowing where they’ve been. I usually just bake them in the oven since they’re so much harder to cut than plain potatoes.

Not everything we do has to be amazing nor should we expect others to think so. I think some people were genuinely surprised by the quilt yesterday simply because your standards are usually extremely high, especially for something you sell. I congratulate you for finishing your projects, even when that means imperfection. It is so much easier not to finish or even start something. Having said all that, it seems that you are still struggling with even seam allowances (which you point out in the post). If this really bothers you (and it may not), there’s a great fix. This little magnetic guide has been wonderful for helping me with that and now mine are usually consistent: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/381168790229?lpid=82&chn=ps Keep up the great and inspiring work.

Thanks for the link! I think you have emailed me before about this and I really appreciate it! You’re right, I always struggle with seam allowances. For yesterday’s quilt though, perfection was the opposite of the plan. The plan was to just do my favorite parts of quilting and see what the result was. To me, the result was awesome. To some others, the results were awesome. And to still some others, the results sucked.
I didn’t get into this yesterday and I am seriously as done as can be talking about it, but the reason I originally planned to auction it is that folks on IG had expressed real interest in the progress photos I had shared. I figured if I did an auction, someone who really wanted it could own it AND a charity (Habitat in this case) could benefit. I wasn’t going to keep a dime of the profit. Sometimes with a giveaway, people enter just to enter, they don’t really care to win. (I have two unclaimed giveaway prizes just sitting in my office right now).
Anyway. It was a disaster according to some. I probably should have just skipped the blog post and carried it all out on IG where there was history for the project already. But I live and I learn and I make mistakes. I will not make this one again.
I apologize for the novel on your comment. 😉 Thank you so much for your helpful feedback.

I just think it’s great that you finish so many projects. Most turn out well and when they don’t, you try again (I’m thinking the sweater you did last year) and get a better result. It just seems that you have sewn many things and still have this (little) problem with allowances. Just a comment to help you out. I’ve progressed through quite a bit of trial and error and it would have been so helpful umpteen projects ago to have someone point out an easier way. In any case, what matters is what you felt about the project anyway, what bugged you about it and what didn’t. I got the vibe that you were bugged by seam allowances, though that might not be the case at all. You knew what would happen by not cutting exactly or pre-washing, so you knew not to expect “perfection” (whatever that is). So here’s my novel-length reply to your novel-length reply!

They’re good, but I’m guessing these are much better! I just got a new pizza stone because I’m tired of just seeing your grilled pizza photos- we will hopefully grill pizzas this weekend! Maybe I’ll make some sweet potato fries for my little one to eat alongside us!

I just picked up a 1/4″ foot – it’s great! There is a little metal piece that folds down exactly at 1/4″ where you line up your raw edges, and it’s greatly improved my accuracy.

I love to make sweet potato fries. I make them in the oven, on a sheet of tin foil (mainly because I’m lazy and hate to have to clean the pan-just ball up the foil and throw away). My kids will eat them and when I make them in school (I’m an 8th grade Family & Consumer Science teacher), my students go crazy over them!

My toddler loves these. If it were not for apple sauce and grilled sweet potatoes I don’t know how she would have gained an oz between year 1 and 2. Sometimes we throw a bit of dried rosemary on them, but by and large we just use olive oil and salt and pepper. So good.

As a person who cuts my own fries though, I have to say, you are a very precise fry cutter. Now if I were to post a photo of the fries I cut, someone would probably be hating on me for sure!! 😉
