2015goals

I'm not a resolution person, but I am a "goal" person. I like something actionable (obviously) and I'm a big fan of to do lists (you already know all this). At the start of each year, I like to come up with something things to "complete" in the next 365 days.

Here's last years's list.

This is what I completed in 2014 :

  • take a pottery class
  • start a podcast
  • finish decorating the house (hallway, master bedroom, entryway & bathrooms)
  • launch a shop newsletter
  • grow a decent vegetable garden (25% complete)
  • finish off the backyard (75% complete)
  • take a trip as a family
  • capture one photo of the three of us each month
  • take my shop in a new direction

Overall, not too shabby. My pottery class plan failed because the workshop I wanted to go to never called me back (and I never followed up). I made progress on the house, but it's not "done." We built planter boxes and grew veggies but they didn't thrive like I hoped they would. We made massive progress on the backyard, but it needs some more succulents.

Business-wise, it was an exciting year. MAKE29 launched, the podcast launched. I got my newsletter going and I came up with an idea for GET TO WORK BOOK which I really hope is my first Big Product That Grows Beyond My Reach.

The focus in 2015 is about half business / half personal (which is how my life is). I want to :

  • finish MAKE29 strong (and get rid of my remaining product)
  • start a new bday project (called MAKE&GIVE30) which will hopefully provide great blog content and challenge me creatively
  • launch the new planner
  • clear out my office cupboards and better use the space
  • finish the house for real (hallway, master bathroom, bed side of our master bedroom)
  • grow a much healthier backyard garden
  • add (more) succulents to our backyard
  • continue with the capsule wardrobe (and after summer is over get rid of everything that didn't get worn during all four seasons)
  • take a roll of film of Ellerie each month
  • eat dinner together!
  • make time for a monthly date night
  • keep hitting my 10k steps (tracked with the fitbit)

As always, listed out, it feels like a lot. But some of these are just worked into my daily routine (steps, dinner, wardrobe, film photos). Some I'll accomplish in a weekend (clear the office, decorate the master bath, frame photos for our hallway, add some succulents). Some I'll work on over a season (the garden, the planner). And some are a constant work in progress (the new bday project, date night plans).

I love to have a healthy mix of goals. Some that take a long time. Some that are easy. Some that are hard. Inevitably, I won't get all this stuff done, but that's okay. That's an equal part of the process. No matter what happens, I've learned that starting with some actionable goals helps me have a productive year.

I can already visualize “shake” being incorporated into your 2015 goals. I am so excited to watch these unfold! As you know, you are a MAJOR creative inspiration to me. I somehow felt prepared to set my own goals after only just reading yours.
As an aside: I can’t believe that sharing your business story was not one of your goals for 2014. What an incredible accomplishment that was nonetheless! I felt like I was reading a favorite book or watching a thrilling new series as I returned each week to read the newest addition to you business story. It just goes to show that you are achieving over and above what you have planned 🙂

It’s out first year as a married couple, so we made joint goals for our year. We plan on making them into a poster and hanging them on the wall, so we can mark off the ones that we have accomplished as the year progresses. I hope we can turn this into a family tradition. I, too, work much better with a clear set of goals and tasks in front of me. Good luck with yours!

I have an idea for you, and I am sure it is something you have already heard of. If you are having trouble with your soil your area should have an agricultural department. You can send them samples of your soil (usually they want it from multiple points in your yard,) and they can tell you what you need to add to make your veggies grow. This is a free service, all you have to do is mail in samples. I know you are using container boxes, but I bet they could still help with that. Good luck with your garden!

I love reading your blog because while I’m big on goals and lists, we do things differently. I find that I do well with daily to do lists, but I get bogged down by long term ones, and don’t keep up.
But I find what you write to be so interesting – I love learning other people’s habits and goal-setting tools. So cool.

Our 2015 goal list includes building a studio in the backyard. Eeek! But both my husband and I have a need for a creative space where it doesn’t have to get cleaned up immediately afterward. In our house, you’re free to do anything creative, but it need to get cleaned up asap– not much room for drying or “I’m taking a day or two break and will come back later”. We’re aiming for light and airy and a great space. Here’s hoping!!

Love this list. After listening to your podcast with Crystal, I have fallen in love with the idea of a daily creative challenge. So every day in 2015, I will decorate a playing card (drawing inspiration from a past project of yours!), take a photo, and write a few lines in my journal. So far, so good!

Oh oh! Hurry up and frame photos for your hallway please! I’m trying to frame photos for our house and it’s sooo overwhelming. I have all these frames. I have all these photos. I, for the life of me, can’t figure out which photos to print at which size and which frame to put them in. Ahh! It’s so ridiculous that it’s stressing me out so much, but it is. I think the big issue is that I’m trying to collage some photos into one frame and I can’t figure out the best way to do it. So silly, it’s not like I can’t do it over if I don’t like it! Can’t wait to see what you do!

do you use printer paper or cardstock when you write these out? I started doing this more and wasn’t sure which was better to use.
can’t wait to see more on the blog in 2015!

Thanks for sharing your 2015 goals, and the progress you made on your 2014 goals. I think it’s great that you write them out and actually track your overall progress. There’s something so empowering about a checked-off list.

I so agree with you on not being a resolution person, but being a goal person. I feel like resolutions have such a bad rap, but goals are definitely something that’s more acheiveable! I love hearing about your goals!

Great list! BTW, I love using your December Make29 so much! I even decided to use it for weekly/monthly goals, because there are some things I need to do, but not everyday. I love love love it, Elise! I’ve even sent a few people your way to buy the digital copy. Thanks for making things that inspire creativity. Keep it up, lady!

Where do I begin on favorite posts?! I’ll start by saying my all time favorite post, and I refer to it often, is the one that brought me to your blog in the first place…the post on what you were eating as a gestational diabetic. I too have gestational diabetes, and I felt such a sense of relief when I found your blog, we are very like minded and eat similar diets, so now my meals look a lot like yours! My favorite 2014 blog: your 18 month Ellerie post, I so related to that post–I have a two and half year old son, and it know that feeling of ‘ok, this is my favorite stage!”. I’m here to say that it keeps getting better, my dear! I’m expecting my 2nd in March, and no joke, all we need to finish his nursery is a blanket, and yours would be a treasured gift in my house. I am a huge fan, keep up the great work, and thank you for your help with GDM 🙂
