winter capsule wardrobe

SO. I loved this capsule closet plan. I am excited to continue it into the next season.

These past two and a half months I found that it was way too easy to just stick with the pieces. Frighteningly easy. I ended up buying two new things and adding them in – warm boots from Target and a navy puffy vest for morning walks. Both have gotten a lot of use and both I will be adding to my winter wardrobe. I also ended up getting a sweater out of storage when it started to get "chilly" and I needed extra layers.

But other than that – success. No random splurges. No "shopping just to look." No "but it's on sale!" No super cluttered closet with stuff I don't love. No, "oh this shirt is cute, maybe I should get it in two colors!" Overall, it was pretty great.

I am very excited to try it again for the next three months – January through March.

Towards the end of the first week of December (so earlier than I had planned) I started looking through my pinterest boards and thinking about what I wanted January through March to look like. SPOILER ALERTreally neutral and cozy. I went through my current closet and chose what would stay. Then I went though my bins of clothes and picked out some stuff I've had for years that I wanted to bring back in (this felt like Christmas morning). Last, I made a list of things that I wanted to add. The list looked like this:

  • black denim (I went with my stand-by jean, the jcrew toothpick)
  • white sweatshirt (I found one similar to this on super sale)
  • long sleeve plaid in blue or black (I asked for this for Christmas)
  • black and white striped shirt (loved the extra detailing on this one)
  • a white silk shirt (this came to me c/o Popbasic)

After wearing limited stuff for a few months, shopping for new stuff was more of a challenge. I found that there was a huge difference between "yeah, this is fine." and "yes, this really works." The fine stuff doesn't cut it anymore (which I realize is how it should have been all along). I tried on a lot of pieces and returned a lot of online purchases before I felt good about my decisions. The items starred in the links below are new and I did my best to find a similar source for older items.

I do not think you need to buy anything to make a capsule closet work. Totally the opposite actually. My goal is to round-out my wardrobe this first year so that's why I had a few versatile items on my shopping list.

Topswinteredit

TOPS & DRESSES : 3191 handmade tunic top, oversize cardigan (similar & similar), heart blouse, white silk blouse*, white sweatshirt* (similar), cream loose fitting tee (similar), white v-neck, gray cardigan (similar), topshop tee, madewell v neck"Ellery" patterned top, black and white stripe top*, statement tee (similar), black polka dot top, black longsleeve (similar), Awesome Time baseball tee (purchased here last spring but appears to no longer be available), puffy vest*, navy sweatshirt*, striped top (similar), navy plaid*, light chambray (similar).

Mostly, this next season I am excited to slightly change up the color palette. Less red. More winter white and tan. No shorts (I might regret that). A ton more tops (layers are my favorite and I found myself wanting more top than bottom options last season).

I got a question the other day if I find myself missing color in my wardrobe and the answer is no. Not at all. This neutral style is what I am drawn to. I think this actually was a big part of why I had so much stuff in my closet and not a lot got worn. I would buy the colorful tops thinking "yes!" but when it came time to actually put them on and leave the house, I always thought "no!" and reached for the gray tee. (Or worse, I'd leave the house in the teal top and then get to the restaurant and think, "Damn. I wish I'd worn that gray top.")

I do love color! My goodness, I love color. But in my wardrobe I have learned that just a few colorful dresses for fancy occasions (exhibit a, old from anthro & exhibit b, from nordstrom) are enough. In my everyday life, the neutrals are what I feel my best in (and are so easy to mix and match because everything goes together.)

Bottomsdressesshoes

BOTTOMS, DRESSES & SHOES : jcrew toothpick jeans lighter wash, jcrew toothpick jeans, madewell slim boyjeanjcrew toothpick black denim*, double dare maxi skirt (size up for best fit), skinny pocket pants (similar), xhileration black and gold skirt (from Target but I couldn't find an online source), black maxi dress, black and white striped dress (similar), rainbow sandals, tan ballet flats (similar color), minnetonka moccasins, canvas slip-ons, warm boots, madewell boots (similar)

It's 36 pieces again this time (19 roll-overs, 8 pulled from storage, 7 purchases/gift items and 2 colder weather requirements). That gold and black skirt is sort of the wildcard, but I figured between NYE, my birthday and trip to Vegas it will get worn. I am already starting to rotate things in (and the shorts have been packed away). It feels good to change things up and I can already see that I have a "better" style (for me) evolving after just a few months. I was sad to say good-bye to my favorite item from autumn, the denim vest, but it's coming back in April, for sure.

I said this last time, but it's worth repeating : my daily life is very casual. If I had an out of the house job that required fancier clothing, I would most likely to do smaller capsules of 30 pieces (weekday) and 15 pieces (weekend). But there are so many ways to do this and no "right" way.

The goal for me is to be mindful about what I am buying and wearing. I am NOT a big fan of getting dressed but I'm a huge fan of looking somewhat pulled together. This is helping me bridge those two things.

Anyone else attempting this again? Or for the first time? Sort of addicting, no?

love, Love, LOVE the neutral palette!! And all those blues! I recently treated myself to a couple shopping trips for new work clothes (I was in DESPERATE need of some, with most of mine being a decade old!) and even though I was attempting to add more color to my closet, I ended up mostly with a few different shades of dark-ish blues, tan, grey, and, as much as I tried to escape it, black.
That navy plaid top and the warm boots? ON POINT!

Love the changes for the winter weather! And yup – I’m attempting it for the first time this winter. I’ve got a week and a half off over xmas, and I am very much looking forward to getting my items picked out!

I am obsessed with capsule! I started around August/Sept and I don’t think I’ll ever turn back! Thanks for sharing yours with us. I love to see other capsules… do you think you could maybe do a link up?

Elise, as you do with many things, you’ve inspired again with this wardrobe. Love your style and the neutral palette. I feel exactly the same about the color thing. One thing I am wondering is how you decide your price points/brands. For instance, I am tired of buying tops from Old Navy because they seem to pill/stretch so fast. Do you have any rules like that of certain things you won’t buy from certain places?

I think I am going to try this. In actuality I will probably have to buy some clothes. My wardrobe is scant and haggard. Clothes aren’t my thing, although I am still a girl and want to dress! But if I nail it one year, then I am done for a few more! I would love to see a follow-up post if you see someone cool doing this in Midwest climes. Badger those Messy sisters and see what they would come up with if they did it.

Any advice for tackling a capsule during pregnancy? It’s cold here in Minnesota & things like maxi skirts are out (drag in the snow). I’m not sure where to start!

I woke up this morning happily anticipating un-fancy’s winter capsule reveal today; what a bonus to see yours as we’ll! I love hearing your thought process. I half heartedly tried to do a fall capsule and didn’t really narrow things down, but last night I actually wrote down my list for a winter capsule and boxed up items that didn’t make the cut! I wish I knew of a blogger who was doing a capsule wardrobe in a colder climate because I need more inspiration for non-frumpy winter outfits!

I love this idea. I’ve been hating my wardrobe lately (I live in a climate that has Winter, with a capital w) and I do not have enough warm or appropriate clothes. I might have to think about doing this over the weekend.

I live in a small apt in DC with little storage. I can’t rotate out clothes, so I’ve done a different sort of capsule. No more than 100 total pieces of clothing in my closet (I don’t count shoes/boots, nor socks/underwear/sleepwear). This allows me to reuse most pieces every season(heavy sweaters may be only exception) and still buy some new pieces each year by getting rid of a few old pieces each year. Lots and lots of layering options make this work wonderfully. It is still wonderfully contained, and perhaps leads better to mixing lots of color into the wardrobe.

I asked about your accessories for your fall capsule wardrobe and I am asking again! 🙂
Any changes accessory-wise? Did you ask for any for Christmas? Are you incorporating scarves for winter?
Hope you three have an amazing weekend 🙂

I am totally sticking with the capsule wardrobe this season too. I hope to do it for a full year and see how I like it then (hopefully) continue this method. Planned somewhat poorly in the fall as I live in Michigan and it is way better to have more sweaters in the fall vs. short sleeve. Ha! So I added in a couple sweaters and rotated out some short sleeves, added a dress for holidays and calling it good! Not a huge change for me this season. I am pretty sure our pinterest boards for clothing have many of the same posts! 🙂

I am starting my second season of this too. I have loved it, but So glad you shared yours as I was kind of stuck on how to change it up for winter. I did mostly indigo/burgundy/black for fall. I like the idea of adding some lighter neutral colors. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Hi Elise!
I really wanted to do this for fall but with my pregnancy and post pregnancy body things were changing too much. You and Caroline from unfancy have both inspired me to do this. But also, during my pregnancy I bought very little clothes because I was only going to wear them for a few months. I thought it would feel terrible, that I would get bored with my clothes, that they were too basic. To be honest, it was oddly liberating. And I used the same “capsule” for close than 6 months! I was excited to wear some old clothes again recently, but mostly because they fit again!
Definitely trying for winter! I have already started to select pieces, and even though I haven’t filled my capsule yet, it’s almost there. I also need to buy some new jeans because I can only fit into one of my old ones.

I kind of think pregnacy IS a capsule wardrobe because so few things fit and you don’t want to buy a lot. It’s hard for me to make winter suggestions though…. We live in a warm climate and I didn’t get huge until April. I wonder if another reader will have ideas? Congrats!!

I started the capsule wardrobe as well, but have found that the typical “season” doesn’t really work for the weather here in Colorado. Fall was over by the end of October (Oct was very warm) and November and December have been very cold. Over half my Fall wardrobe I couldn’t wear in October and over half I can’t wear now. I’m thinking next year my “fall capsule” will be September, October, November, and winter will be like… December through May. So sad. But maybe halfway through I’ll do a color palette change! That could keep it fun. 🙂

I love this idea! Maybe after Christmas holidays I will give it a go. Do you find you do laundry more often? I feel like I already do capsule wardrobe in theory just by only wearing my favourites but I’m scared to actually pack away the rest in case I miss a week of laundry and then having nothing clean. Maybe that’s silly but I’d love to hear your experiences!

I’d like to weigh in on this since I’m 21 weeks on my 3rd pregnancy, and I feel like I’m more comfortable with this pregnancy than the previous two. The main thing I’m doing this time is wearing jeans more than trying to continue to wear slacks at work. I work with engineers, so anything is up for grabs, but I generally try to dress up at least a little. But no one will criticize the pregnant girl, so if jeans are comfy, go for it. Also, layers. I got 3 flowy cardigans from target, and I’m rotating them like crazy. I’m also a little addicted to (knock-off) pashmina scarves. And finally, I prefer wearing black t-shirts over just about anything, so I’m just embracing that attitude at least 4 days a week. I’m not sure anyone’s even noticed, and I feel more confident AND comfortable. My first pregnancy I bought a few “lots” of maternity clothes on eBay, but I tend to reach more for the items I bought individually at target and motherhood maternity. Yikes! I’ve written a novel! But seriously, layers!! And congratulations!!

hi laura! I got pregnant in june (due at the end of february) and did my first capsule wardrobe this last season (october – december). i wish i had more advice, but i think i approached it just as elise did or the explanation posts on blogs she previously linked to do it and it was how i will do it in the future. pregnancy didn’t change things up too much except this time i just had less to cull through because i have less that fit! i pulled everything out of my closet, removed anything super off-season, that i wanted to donate, or that needed altering/fixing. then i set aside anything that i had already grown out of but would use in the future. i then pulled items i wanted in my capsule and put them back one-by-one into the closet. remaining items went in another closet out of view (or for some people, this is storage bins).
most items in my capsule were wearable in october, but a few were warmer (so for cold weather) or larger so i grew into them as i neared december. i spent some time making sure everything mixed and matched well, even writing out some new outfit ideas for myself, then made a small list of missing items to shop for. unlike some capsule participants, i choose to shop throughout the time (not just at the assembly phase), but i stick to a list of items based off my wardrobe gaps and needs. i would recommend doing the same – going through your closet, moving out anything that doesn’t fit or isn’t seasonal, then seeing from what is left, what you like and want to use and what you need to buy. if the rigidness of capsule wardrobe scares you during a transition time, remember that it doesn’t mean you can’t add or remove things through the season if you need! it is whatever you want it to be!

i got on board in september and i’m slowly converting all my girlfriends! pregnancy helped make the first one easy because i only had so much to work with, but i am excited to keep going for months and months to come. the only thing i do differently than most is that i still shop throughout the capsule period. now though, i have a specific list of gaps to fill in the capsule or investment pieces that i know i want to add over time. this gives me time to comparison shop and find my one perfect item versus buy in a set time period because i only have that time to shop. works for me!
i realized that the concept started to permeate other areas of my home/life too. for example, i cleaned out my at-home manicure box/kit and realized i only ever paint my fingers and toes bright red, deep burgundy or nude. instead of holding on to a dozen so-so colors that were probably all old anyways, i chucked then all, selected three perfect shades from my favorite brands and considered myself set until one of those three bottles run out. my cabinet is streamlined and my choices super simple. same with make-up: why own 7 lipsticks when i can chose one perfect one and use it until its out? my medicine cabinets have never been sparser!

not really – what I do find is that I am more willing to rewear stuff that isn’t really that dirty – like jeans or a sweatshirt, instead of just throwing it into the wash after two hours. Our laundry cycle felt the exact same to me last season. 🙂

yes! I do have some comfy bottoms (three pairs of sweatpant type pants and one pair of leggings) that I will wear for just lounging. My tops are all very comfy so just one extra lounge top.
I went through and REALLY culled my loungewear stuff down though because I didn’t want so many options. since I work from home it’s too easy to just lougewear it up all day. 🙂

i began the capsule wardrobe when you did- for fall. i longed for simplicity! the first few days, i felt like I would NEVER like it, but 3 months later, I can’t imagine doing anything different. I actually found out I was pregnant weeks after beginning the capsule. I swapped out a lot of clothes, exchanging form fitting tees for flow-ier shirts. I also swapped out pants that were more forgiving in the waist. i was still able to stick to my capsule for the most part. I had to give myself some grace though because I like rule following 🙂
Now that I am 3.5 Months pregnant and preparing to shop for maternity clothes, i feel like the capsule helped me understand how to strategically buy strategically. I’m going to try to put together a capsule this week and take advantage of the after christmas sales for a pair of maternity jeans and a few tops online.
I love your color scheme! i have a lot of blue, black, and taupe/light grey things. very comfy!

I read all your capsules and I am totally hooked!!! I cant wait to start! I have like zero fashion sense so that part may be hard for me but I do like your casual style and your unique pieces. I do not really accessorize, and I don’t have a signature piece but I am excited to start with what I have and see what develops. I do have a good eye so I am thinking that as I begin the pieces that I add will help me to define my style. This has been the hardest thing for me over the years. My favorite pieces you have are the Madewell v neck tees and your long sleeve button downs, plus the brown boots! Those rock!!! Excited to get started! Thanks for all your ideas and help!!!
