toddler style: toms boots, old navy floral leggings & hoodie, mama made hadley hat.

(Adding the title of this post to my list of memoir slash country album titles.)

I mentioned last week that my laptop went on the fritz. I didn't mention that this happened while I had about 16 tabs open (including Hulu) and while I was editing photos, writing a blog post and working on make29 webpages. I think this was the universe saying "SINGLE-TASK, BLAHA."

Whenever I have computer issues, I find myself frantically on my phone googling the exact description – "MacBook Pro yellow screen with odd beeping sound" this time around – it's always reassuring/horrifying to see that tons of other people have googled the same. I always land on a Yahoo! answers page first which is never a good thing and then I wind up on the Apple help page. This time, I found out how to safe boot (turn on while holding the shift key) and that allowed me to pull up a really poor graphics version of the screen. From there I could back up key things (via dropbox, email and our external harddrive).

It's interesting what become "key things" while in crisis mode (I titled the folder on our external harddrive ELISE PANIC MODE BACKUP). This time it was my December make29 stuff first. Then my problogger presentation slides second. Then, when I realized the whole computer wasn't going to go up in flames I started backing up blog graphics and photos and podcast files.

(Obviously the lesson is that I need to just be constantly backing up on the cloud or something.)

(But part of the problem is I rely on my programs as much as my files. I still use a student version of Dreamweaver 5 from college – yikes! – and have other downloaded programs: batchPDF merger, Fetch, Screencast, that I use constantly but don't think would transfer? Plus, it's the little things, you know? Like the way my bookmarks toolbar is set up.)

Anyway. I took my laptop in Thursday morning and then was without a computer until today (Sunday as I type this up). The Genius at Apple said it was possible that I'd get everything back the same but that it was also possible they'd have to wipe it clean.

It was oddly refreshing to think about getting back a completely wiped laptop. I'd have to Just Restart and that was exciting. I started planning out a new blog design (because I would have nothing else to do?!). I decided I'd pair this new computer up to the cloud FIRST THING. I'd upgrade to Photoshop immediately. I'd think about being better at archiving my photos. I'd never have more than two tabs open! OH SO MANY PLANS.

And then, of course, on Sunday, when I walked in and the guy told me that the video drive had been replaced but all the data was the same I was thrilled. THRILLED. I fresh start would have been nice. But my familiar, fully-loaded BFF laptop restored? That's even better. (Especially with a MAKE29 launch in just a week.)

So what's the moral? Back up your files. (I'm going to get connected to an automatic system.) Single task! Learn how to safe-boot!

But also, really, the moral is to take a few days off from the computer once in awhile. I so enjoyed my three day break. I got to read a lot. I started cleaning my office (there is still so much more to do, follow twitter and instagram for more de-stashing giveaways). I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I played an absurd amount of Candy Crush. Most important, though, I knitted the sweetest hat for Ellerie (with so many plans for so many more).

I would almost say it was worth the hassle.

ps : and, thanks to this, I am seriously so excited to get started on a new blog design. It's been over three years since the last major overhaul and man, is this space ready for it. Look for that in a few weeks.

Losing my stuff is a big fear but I definitely don’t back up enough! And yet, at the same time, like you said, there is also an excitement about starting over.

I love a computer story with a happy ending. And even though it will not be a fresh start – you can do that on your time line if you desire. So all good!

Elise, I’ve been using Crash Plan for over a year for my offsite, and I have to admit, it gives me peace of mind. I had to use a Seed Drive to get started with them (they send you a hard drive to load up) but it was worth it. I have an Airport Time Capsule for my local back ups. I also back up everyone’s computers in the house periodically. However, my son’s computer finally died after many lives lost, and I realized the back up I had of his content was incomplete. I have no idea why I feel compelled to tell you all of this. Suffice to say, I’m so on board with the backing up. Can’t wait to see what you have in store!

This may be a silly question, but do you use something to back up your files that is accessible on any computer? Like Dropbox or other hard drives–what is your go-to? I’m always wanting to access a photo or a document on my computer when I’m out and about on a different computer.

My daughter is a bit older than your daughter, but we buy them the same leggings! My daughter has the old navy floral one with an off white background (we almost went for the navy and then found the off white which she preferred). We also have the black and white striped leggings from Target which I have seen all over instagram! Just noticing.

Glad to hear! Here’s my back-up story (because you asked – not 😉 ): Time Machine reminds me to back up my stuff in a set interval, and I do so on an external drive. I am panicky about my photos and have two drives for those, but I am still on the lookout for a safe cloud or off-site version. The thing is – even more than being panicky about losing stuff – I am determined to not use a cloud back-up service where I hand my data off to others (and especially businesses in other countries with other laws) to keep safe. With work stuff, I am not allowed to (privacy wise), with private stuff, I just don’t want to. Torn!

I am laughing at the absurdity of redesigning a blog in the middle of the holidays and, well, everything else you have going on, but I so get it. My boss always tells me, “If you want something done, give it to a busy woman.” And that has always held true for me. Breaks are great, but motivation and inspiration feel really great too. Have a great day!

I’m not Elise, but I use Dropbox. I upgraded to pro recently and it’s so easy. It’s easy to drag and drop the files, it’s accessible anywhere, including my phone.

When I designed my most recent blog (uhh… had someone else design it lol – I wish I had your skills!), I was completely inspired by your simple, beautiful one. I can’t wait to see what’s in store 🙂

Get a Dropbox Pro account pronto! I just started backing up all of my photos on the cloud since my computer was running slowly and it feels great to know they are safe. Plus they added a new feature for browsing through your photos which is really slick.

Elise, as well as inspiring me on to bigger and better things, you’ve also been my downfall – after seeing you mention it a few times I downloaded Candy Crush, oh man! Big mistake, not been able to put it down all weekend!!! Hehe!!

I was smiling reading through your laptop story… a similar thing happened to my Macbook Pro about a month ago and my process was the same – googling help on my phone and ending up in the same places! I also learned to boot in safe mood and backed up as much as I could. My hard drive had to be replaced but all good in the end. Can’t wait to see your new blog look. 🙂
