These past few months I have talked about my attempt (and so far success) with the capsule wardrobe plan. I've also talked about how I don't care to organize my digital archives. And I have mentioned that there is nothing quite like film.

0021_21 0017_17 0031_31

All of these things have been on my mind.

Less stuff … could that translate to less photos? Should that translate to less photos? Hmmmmm.

0026_26 0035_35

I like film for many reasons but one of them is that you get what you get. It's limited to 36 photos. That's it.

I decided to try an experiment and for the first half of October and I kept my film camera in plain sight so I'd remember to take a photo of Ellerie each day. (It sat right on her bookshelf which meant I ended up capturing a lot of post nap photos.) It's crazy how badly I wanted to just use the whole roll at once. Or how much I wanted to glance down and see if I had indeed captured her head tilt.

0024_240016_16

But I waited (as film forces you to do). And tried as hard as I could to just take one photo a day.

0030_300028_28 0029_29

And almost every day I failed and took at least two (which is why my experiment ended on 10/19 instead of 10/31).

0006_6 0005_5

But there were more than a few times when I thought maybe (hopefully?) I had captured magic.

0015_15

Last week I dropped off the photos (I develop at a local place) and waited my one hour until pickup. And then frantically ripped open the package before I was out the door.

0014_14

Sigh.

I got it. I got it. The head tilt.

But what thrilled me more is that these photos are so her right now. The expressions! EEEKS! Some of these are not the expressions that would catch my eye if I was picking from 40 different but similar photos from my DSLR or iPhone. They are not the moments I would choose to print if I had my pick from infinite digital storage. But they are the ones that I got during the month of October. And somehow that makes them so amazingly her. Her fifteen-month old personality radiates through these.

0025_250023_23

It's a little early to be setting 2015 goals (just kidding, it's never too early), but I think I'm going to attempt to take one roll of Ellerie a month next year. I'll stick my printed 4×6 photos in a beautiful album just like the old days. I'll frame my favorites with huge white mats in our hallway (finally! a plan for the hallway!). I'll worry less about getting my big camera out and see if I can make it work with just film and the iPhone.

Sounds like a plan.

*I've had a Canon EOS Rebel XS since high school that I still use whenever I shoot film. I shoot with this 50mm lens. My photo developer sticks the images on a CD for me, so these are the un-touched digital files.

There really is something so different about her personality in these. I don’t know if it’s the film or her age, but she is looking so much less baby, and so much more little person (sorry, I know mothers hate to hear that). I really love this collection, and the plan for 2015. Seriously awesome!

I use my big camera less and less, even using my phone for hat pattern photos more than I should probably admit. I love the film goal, though!!

Elise, I love these photos, and I really love the idea of making a good old-fashioned album.
I always mean to do something with my photos but often feel like I need to do some kind of fancy scrapbook, when, in fact, I can just put them all together simply in an album. No fuss, no pressure.

I just got out my nikon from high school. I wish it was a canon though so I could switch out lenses with my digital 😦 I can’t wait to see my first roll of film. I went with black and white, but I’m excited to try color. I think you’re on to something! 😉 You got magic photos of Ellerie for sure.

Elise I absolutely LOVE THESE!I too miss the old days and taking photos with my old film camera that I let go. I am going to have to ask my mom for hers’. This also makes me think back to all the great photos my mom took of us growing up with her film camera. Little E is going to LOVE that you took these.

Honestly, to me, these are the best pictures of Ellerie you have ever taken and shared on the blog, and I have read every post since she was born (just a little obsessed…). So yes… please continue this project in 2015. When your daughter is as adorable (the head tilt, come on) and as photogenic as Ellerie is, I imagine it is quite challenging to limit yourself to 1-2 photos per day. But the effort was well worth it. These photos are… well, more authentic than any photos I’ve seen in a long time. I love it!

You really did capture the head tilt, perfect adorable girl you have there.
Question – do you think going back to film makes your digital big camera photos easier to get right? Or do you, like me just shoot a ton till you get it right?

No. I think film is so much easier than digital slr. These photos have a light and softness I’ve never been able to capture. Plus, with film you can’t overthink it. 🙂

Beautiful photos! I’d love to get a film camera to experiment with, I learned how to shoot and develop film in high school and I wasn’t super great at it but I’d love to give it a go again! You caught such great moments of Ellerie!
