I'm so excited to be partnering with Canon USA for the next few months to bring you some awesome DIY photo projects using their range of printers. When this opportunity first came up (LAST JANUARY!) I knew that when I received my Canon PIXMA iP8720 Printer (which is a large format that prints up to 13×19), I would be using it to create killer palm tree art for our bathroom.

thrifted frame wall art

This project is the opposite of a traditional framing project in that I started with the frames and then printed photos to fill them. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to thrift random frames that "went together" without being matchy-matchy.

thrifted frame wall art

Over the course of a few weeks, I pulled old frames from our garage and visited our local thrift stores and bought them out of wood, white or gold frames in various sizes. My original plan was to fill just one wall, but I kept finding frames (and photos) and so I kept going around the whole bathroom.

thrifted frame wall art

I had the large format printer and tons of wall space to work with so big frames were awesome. I shopped the normal photo frame section and the framed art section to find my frames. (You can see in the image above an example where I removed the existing art and dark mats and replaced it with a 12×12 photo.)

Over the years, I have taken quite a palm tree photo collection. Palm trees are special to me and Paul. At our wedding we danced to Rise Against's Swing Life Away and our favorite line is "we'll settle down where palm trees grow." Since before we started dating our goal was always to get to San Diego long-term and while that may change, we're pretty thrilled to be here now.

That very top left photo is the first photo we ever took in front of a palm tree the summer before I moved to Maryland. That exact photo hung in our Maryland bedroom and I found it while changing up some of my old frames.

These photos were taken all over the place. In San Diego, of course, but also Hawaii, Bora Bora, Oxnard and Palm Springs – all places we have lived or visited together over the past eight years of dating. The best part is I can look at ANY photo and tell you instantly where it was taken.

I printed all of my photos at home on the PIXMA iP8720. The best part of working with the large format printer (by far!) is that I could custom print the most random of dimensions (16×9.5 for example) to fit my gathered frames.

To get the wall placement right, I used paper templates to "map out" where my frames would go. It helped to work from the ceiling down. I hung the heavy and low to the ground frames with Command picture hanging strips (they are super strong and work well!). I found the best way to get things straight was to pick one big frame and use a level on that then work out from it, lining each frame up as I went.

I am thrilled with the print quality (and that I didn't even have to replace the ink cartridges to get all of these images!) and LOVE how this bathroom turned out.

bathroom art Cheers!

It's totally over the top and exactly how I wanted it to look x 100. It took forever (much longer than anticipated) and I don't care to ever shop for a used frame again but man, was it worth it.

This post is sponsored by Canon USA. Project idea, opinions, words and photos are all my own.track

I love the look, Elise, and what a great partnership that is for you. You’ve inspired me to hunt for frames in thrift shops, and I’ve found some goodies since!

Your story in palm trees… what a clever idea! Plus my foggy fall afternoon definitely needed the sight of blue skies and palm trees – so, thank you!

Such a cool project Elise! Love the look of mismatch frames tied together with similar photos.
That lyric (which I didn’t even know was a lyric) about palm trees hit me the moment I saw it on your wall in Oxnard (i think?). Living in MN for 26 years, I have always had a thing for palm trees and visiting places they grew. My husband and I moved to Houston almost 3 years ago, and so “settling down where palm trees grow” has fit out lives well. So glad I saw it on your wall years ago.

Oh my goodness! How awesome is this! One wall would have been great but the entire bathroom is over the top exceptional and beyond. And congrats on the partnership – how exciting for you. I hope to see more ‘projects’ on your blog.

Great idea. Looks wonderful. I also connect to palm trees. First thing I saw when I moved to LA as a kid, driving to our new home from LAX. I have a love-hate thing with palm trees though. They’ve never been ‘real’ trees to me but they are so graphic. I also shoot them all the time.

This is utterly brilliant. When I live somewhere I can put holes in the wall, I want to do this, but with photos of a place.

I absolutely love this idea and am inspired by it!! My bathroom is extremely tiny (1921 house), did you find that this many frames made your bathroom feel smaller at all? I would love to create something like this but am afraid it might make the tiny bathroom feel closed in even more.

Good question! I don’t think it feels smaller, just intense (in a very good way!). It helps that we have some natural light coming in. If there is a window, I say go for it!

Your palm walls are amazing, I’ve been anxiously awaiting this post ever since I first saw you dropping hints about it. Love it!!

okay, I am impressed. And then I saw that view looking toward the door with all THREE walls, and yeah–blown away. So impactful! Hurray!
And while I sometimes cringe at sponsored posts, I immediately went to check out that printer. The quality looks amazing, and LARGE FORMAT to boot! (Plus, I am in the market for a new photo printer). Are you using it for all your photo printing now? I’d use it mostly for PL and instagrams, and occasionally something large.
I promise to use your click-through if I decided to go with Canon! (I listened to that podcast episode πŸ™‚

hey! Canon sent me a few printers that I will be sharing more about over the next few months. I have the Selphy that I’m printing small photos on, the large format (shared in this post) that I am printing bigger projects on and then a “normal” 8.5×11 printer that I am using as my daily printer since my HP photosmart bit the bullet this summer. πŸ™‚

Oh man, I have dreamed about owning a large format FOREVER. I am so happy with this one.
I haven’t been doing too much small photo printing these past few months (just one PL layout a month) but I will be using it for some 12×12 photos that I need for sure.
Canon has a smaller, portable, selphy printer and tons of “traditional” size printers as well for printing smaller photos. πŸ™‚

The scarring might be due to the fact that my mother used to have her entire life-long coffee mug collection hanging on hooks around the dining room.
And then the 1994 earthquake happened. You can imagine πŸ™‚

Unrelated: I noticed it looks like you have a fern hanging on your shower rod. Do you leave it there all the time? Do you know what kind it is and is it easy or hard to care for? I’m looking at what kind of plants I should get to hang in our apartment.

I keep it there all the time! This is our guest bathroom so it doesn’t get as much use, but when people are in down they just shower with it there. We have a lot of light in the bathroom so that helps and I water it by sticking it in the plugged sink (and letting it pull water up from the bottom) about every two weeks.
