autumn capsule wardrobe

I am so excited to try a "capsule wardrobe" for the next three months (October 1-December 31).

There are about a million ways to do this and certainly no right way, but I have done most of my research slash way too much thinking via this great blog. I am following similar rules :

  • I've donated a bunch of clothes I know I'm not going to wear again
  • I've packed and stored everything that is not in season
  • I've culled my closet (and drawers) to just 36 pieces of clothing (including shoes)
  • I've committed to not buying anything new through the end of December
  • I've chosen clothing that fits together and that I am excited to reach for
  • I've picked almost nothing that needs special care or dry cleaning

My goals with this project are to 1) eliminate clutter, 2) save time standing in front of a full closet with "nothing to wear," 3) cut down on unnecessary spending and 4) better define my personal style.

autumn capsule wardrobe tops

TOPS : red plaid shirt (similar), gray cardigan (similar), sweatshirt tee (similar), super old Alpha Phi USC tee, topshop tee, madewell v neck, "Ellery" patterned top (I totally bought this for the name last winter), statement sweatshirt, statement tee (similar), navy blazer, striped top (similar), baseball tee (similar), dark chambray, light chambray (similar), demin vest* (this is a total wildcard, but I'm so inspired by how Joy wears hers on instagram), white tunic top, white v neck, cream loose fitting tee (similar).

I know what I like to wear – comfortable, flattering and for the most part neutral clothing. Most of this capsule wardrobe is clothing I have had for years or for at least a year. I bought five new things to round it out (denoted with an *), but for the most part, I shopped my closet.

autumn capsule wardrobe bottoms and dresses

BOTTOMS & DRESSES : jcrew 5" chino shorts, jcrew toothpick jeans, madewell slim boyjean*, comfy gray pants, jcrew city pants (similar), tan shorts (similar), skinny pocket pants (similar), tan maxi skirt, double dare maxi skirt (size up for best fit), plaid dress*, black shortsleeve maxi dress (similar), black and white striped dress* (mine was purchased in store, but here's the plain black one).

The weather in San Diego is mild so even though it will be a bit cooler in fall, I really won't need more than a long-sleeve shirt most days. I included a few pairs of shorts and sandals because I know they'll get use at least through the end of October. I am not including accessories (baseball caps, headbands, scarves, tights or jewelry) or workout clothing but I have paired those items down and decided to include these categories on the no buy list.

autumn capsule wardrobe shoes

SHOES : rainbow sandals, tan ballet flats (similar color), minnetonka moccasins, canvas slip-ons*, gold sandals, madewell boots (similar)

My daily life is so casual. For the most part it's running errands with the occasional meeting a friend for coffee or a date night with Paul. Even our holidays this year will be fairly relaxed. Those dresses plus my favorite pair of boots and tights will be perfect for the few events we have planned. I almost never wear heels and so rarely "dress up" (exception is the wedding we're headed to this weekend – I'll be wearing a new dress and then packing it away for the summer months) so this is for sure an "everyday" wardrobe.

My fear with this project is not that I end up missing my full closet. It's instead that I don't miss it at all and those three plastic bins of clothing I have stored were a total waste. But I guess that's the point, right? Make better habits and smarter decisions starting NOW and not look back. I turn 30 next February. What if from 30 on I could stop shopping out of boredom or "pretend need" or "buy two get one! deals" and start only buying and wearing clothing I love? That would be so rad.

I'm excited! A new challenge. While I don't plan on sharing daily outfits, I will check in with updates now and again throughout the season.

Affiliate links for daaaaaays. I've linked to exact items or similar items where I could find a decent source.

This idea of the capsule wardrobe is so great. I’ve been working towards it for, I guess almost a year now. I think I’m finally ready to really go with the challenge starting in October and cull the crap. I’ve been donating clothing (and all sorts of other things) like crazy for the past 6 months. I realized yesterday, as I made another drop-off to Goodwill, I think I’m actually at the point where I like giving things away more than I like buying them. Wow.
If you haven’t found her already, you should definitely check out Courtney Carver of Project 333. http://theproject333.com/

Very cool, Elise! I’m interested in doing this too, maybe starting tomorrow?!
I know we can each make our own rules for this, but I was wondering, do you not consider undergarments, tights, etc.? I’ve been trying to figure out how many pieces to wear, but didn’t know how to go about things like that. Thanks!

Yes yes! Love Courtney’s site and minimalism tips (more than Un-Fancy, I’d have to say).

I’ve been toying with this idea. Over the weekend I threw away and donated a bunch of clothing and my closet feels much better, I can actually see things! And things I want to wear! Since I have two very different styles; work clothes, and weekended/casual clothes, trimming my wardrobe down to 37 pieces seemed too hard, but I admire people who do it. Maybe I’ll try it after Christmas.
I’m surprised none of your handmade tops made it into the selection.

You introduced me to Caroline of Un-Fancy and I was instantly hooked! I’m a little intimidated by the capsule wardrobe… something about being limited to JUST a certain number of pieces is scary! But, I have been shopping more consciously for this season. Can’t wait to hear your updates about how the project is going 🙂

I totally dig your style, and your tops look like you stole them from my closet! I tried the capsule for fall and it worked pretty well, but my everyday clothes and my work/office clothes are so different I didn’t have much overlap. Good luck! I can’t wait to see how you like it! Maybe I’ll get inspired to try it again.

I am so excited to see how this challenge goes for you. I have a feeling it will change your clothing habits just how you’re predicting it will. And that in itself is enough to make me want to try it.

this is so cool elise. in the past few years i’ve been working hard to define my personal style (or goal/wish personal style) so that i don’t spend money (or time) adding pieces that don’t move me in that direction. different method, similar goal i suppose.
in your research, did you find anyone doing a capsule wardrobe that had a totally different wardrobe for work? i bounced around off one of the links you shared in a recent saturday link post and couldn’t find anyone. i literally use two separate closets for separate portions of my life (work and non-work) and while some blouses or blazers cross over, it’s rare. i wonder if i could apply the same “rules” to both separately or just to my non-work life at at time. hmmm, you’ve got me thinking….

Yep, I didn’t mention underwear but I am not including accessories, undies or gym clothes in my 36 — however!!!! I cut them down and will not be buying any of those items for three months as well. 🙂

My first time here (saw your blog on typepad). Love the idea of a capsule wardrobe & love your style. I own very little in terms of clothes. Main reason is simplicity plus I love everything I have so I wear them all the time.

I read something in the comments section from someone who’s going to do both – 37 items for work and 37 for home. I bet you could do that and maybe even shrink them both a bit 30/30 say which would be awesome. It’s for sure easier for me with working from home!! I am excited for the “challenge” of just putting together a simple outfit daily…

I’m interested in this idea. Right now I’m doing a closet analysis to see what i actually wear..turns out I wear 75% of my wardrobe (which is much larger than 36 pieces) on a regular basis. I think it would be hard to pair it down, but a fun challenge none the less. Thanks for sharing.

I accepted the challenge and started my fall capsule sept 1- because I live in the midwest and it’s gonna get cold, sept 1- dec 1 worked best for fall. So far I love it! One unexpected side effect is now I buy more clothes for my kids! Oops! Wonder if that will happen to you too!

Great point! I’m too rigid in my thinking I guess “It has to be 37 items or it won’t work!” Totally not true. I’m going to go home and think about it. Funny thing is my weekend outfit is jeans and the same shirt from Target that I love. So I really only need 2 items for the weekend. I like what you said about just putting the clothes you don’t need somewhere else, that would help. If I didn’t think about an item or miss it then I should probably let it go:) Thanks for the inspiration.

Love this! Un-fancy inspired me to do a capsule wardrobe, too, as well as a guilty pleasure book I read called Lessons from Madame Chic! The book is all about the value of quality over quantity and appreciating what we have, based on the author’s time spent living with a host family in Paris. I love what you said about hoping that you don’t miss your clothes in storage. I just turned 30 a couple months ago and I’ve been trying to shop more intentionally, so I’m totally with ya on that!

I started my capsule in September here in San Diego and it has been awesome. Also keeping track of everything on Stylebook and it rocks. I love having an inventory of everything. How did you photograph everything – found a spot on the wall? My photos do not look that good!

I was so looking forward to seeing your take on the capsule wardrobe. I hope to incorporate it into my wardrobe as well, but with where I live, I’m thinking of making winter Dec-Feb, spring Mar-May, summer June-Aug, and fall Sept-Nov. This gives me a couple more months to get things together. Thanks for this post. So inspiring, as always!

I am thinking about doing this too. It’s kind of ridiculous just how much STUFF I have. Working in retail for many years definitely didn’t help my shopping bug. I’m excited to look into my closet and only see the things I want to wear. It’ll be refreshing not to think “nope, don’t really like that…. that’s too small… ehh not really into that… I’m not really comfortable in pale yellow…”

I love this idea. Currently I have way less than 37 items in my wardrobe but am planning to shop and do it well this time – buying only what I love and keeping it minimal. Thanks for the inspiration!

I’ve been following a capsule wardrobe with the help of getyourprettyon.com for all of 2014. My most surprising finding was how much less time and money I spend on my wardrobe while looking way more pulled together and feeling my confident. This is great. Being pregnant kind of forced me into a capsule wardrobe and I’m kinda missing that now that all my clothing fits again. I really need to go through everything and let go of all the pieces that didn’t work out. I think you said it right that it’s not that we miss the things we don’t use…. it’s that not needing them makes us feel bad for buying them in the first place.

I’ve been looking forward to reading this post since you first mentioned the capsule wardrobe! Awesome post, I love your selection of clothes – and every time I stop by your blog I tell myself to buy a chambray shirt. It seems to go with everything 🙂
Maybe I’ll give this challenge a try in the winter but in Germany we need a ridiculous amount of coats and boots and wool sweaters. But maybe I’ll give it a try not counting outerwear. Oh and since I’m a knitter accessories wouldn’t be counted either, of course 😉

We have two wonderful special needs children and my husband and I have (and always do) been thinking about their future. The outcome is that they will be with us and most likely never leave home but we have been finding ways for them to be at home but still be self sufficient.
This is where the tiny house movement comes in.
We are going to build, as a family, tiny houses on our land. We have been buying books and reading all about construction and how living smaller is not only wise but environmentally sound and also cuts down on reliance on material goods. You even eat better as you buy fresh.
my comment might not seem related to your wardrobe, but this is definitely a “tiny house move” and I think it’s wonderful. You will do this with ease and style.

Love your choices. I’m currently 2 weeks into my capsule wardrobe and I love it. The time I (don’t) spend in front of my closet went down to nothing. In the past two weeks I never had the feeling of not knowing what to wear. It really changed something inside me.
Oh and you are right, the part I’m afraid of is not wanting to wear those clothes in the plastic boxes.. And I have way more clothes in there than in my closet 🙂

    Hey Hannah
I live in an area where it gets cold in winters. My capsule wardrobe has 45 items (shared yesterday on my blog). But I didn’t include undershirts for layering because they don’t count as actual clothing for me. So technically there are more than 45 items. Maybe that helps. And in the end, the number is so not important. Just go through your stuff and create a wardrobe with your favorite items. That could be 30 or 50 or 60, it doesn’t matter.
