autumn capsule wardrobe

I am so excited to try a "capsule wardrobe" for the next three months (October 1-December 31).

There are about a million ways to do this and certainly no right way, but I have done most of my research slash way too much thinking via this great blog. I am following similar rules :

  • I've donated a bunch of clothes I know I'm not going to wear again
  • I've packed and stored everything that is not in season
  • I've culled my closet (and drawers) to just 36 pieces of clothing (including shoes)
  • I've committed to not buying anything new through the end of December
  • I've chosen clothing that fits together and that I am excited to reach for
  • I've picked almost nothing that needs special care or dry cleaning

My goals with this project are to 1) eliminate clutter, 2) save time standing in front of a full closet with "nothing to wear," 3) cut down on unnecessary spending and 4) better define my personal style.

autumn capsule wardrobe tops

TOPS : red plaid shirt (similar), gray cardigan (similar), sweatshirt tee (similar), super old Alpha Phi USC tee, topshop tee, madewell v neck, "Ellery" patterned top (I totally bought this for the name last winter), statement sweatshirt, statement tee (similar), navy blazer, striped top (similar), baseball tee (similar), dark chambray, light chambray (similar), demin vest* (this is a total wildcard, but I'm so inspired by how Joy wears hers on instagram), white tunic top, white v neck, cream loose fitting tee (similar).

I know what I like to wear – comfortable, flattering and for the most part neutral clothing. Most of this capsule wardrobe is clothing I have had for years or for at least a year. I bought five new things to round it out (denoted with an *), but for the most part, I shopped my closet.

autumn capsule wardrobe bottoms and dresses

BOTTOMS & DRESSES : jcrew 5" chino shorts, jcrew toothpick jeans, madewell slim boyjean*, comfy gray pants, jcrew city pants (similar), tan shorts (similar), skinny pocket pants (similar), tan maxi skirt, double dare maxi skirt (size up for best fit), plaid dress*, black shortsleeve maxi dress (similar), black and white striped dress* (mine was purchased in store, but here's the plain black one).

The weather in San Diego is mild so even though it will be a bit cooler in fall, I really won't need more than a long-sleeve shirt most days. I included a few pairs of shorts and sandals because I know they'll get use at least through the end of October. I am not including accessories (baseball caps, headbands, scarves, tights or jewelry) or workout clothing but I have paired those items down and decided to include these categories on the no buy list.

autumn capsule wardrobe shoes

SHOES : rainbow sandals, tan ballet flats (similar color), minnetonka moccasins, canvas slip-ons*, gold sandals, madewell boots (similar)

My daily life is so casual. For the most part it's running errands with the occasional meeting a friend for coffee or a date night with Paul. Even our holidays this year will be fairly relaxed. Those dresses plus my favorite pair of boots and tights will be perfect for the few events we have planned. I almost never wear heels and so rarely "dress up" (exception is the wedding we're headed to this weekend – I'll be wearing a new dress and then packing it away for the summer months) so this is for sure an "everyday" wardrobe.

My fear with this project is not that I end up missing my full closet. It's instead that I don't miss it at all and those three plastic bins of clothing I have stored were a total waste. But I guess that's the point, right? Make better habits and smarter decisions starting NOW and not look back. I turn 30 next February. What if from 30 on I could stop shopping out of boredom or "pretend need" or "buy two get one! deals" and start only buying and wearing clothing I love? That would be so rad.

I'm excited! A new challenge. While I don't plan on sharing daily outfits, I will check in with updates now and again throughout the season.

Affiliate links for daaaaaays. I've linked to exact items or similar items where I could find a decent source.

Toni, it’s a great “tiny house move”. What a sweet story of your family’s needs, and your plans to meet them. Much blessing to you! Debbie

I love this post! This inspires me to make a capsule wardrobe! I also have always loved the double dare maxi skirt, but never knew what clothing company it was from. I am glad you left the link, because I bought it! Quick question is the skirt see through? 🙂

I love this post Elise – I saw the teaser on instagram and have been excited to see how you went about this. I have thought about doing a capsule wardrobe in the past, but just never did it. Over the summer I have been working hard and have lost 35 lbs! (And still not at my goal weight, yep I was up there, still another 20 to lose). Anyway, obviously, none of my clothes are going to fit me (they don’t now) so I have been seriously considering this as a way to guide my shopping since I am going to need a whole new wardrobe to begin with. I like the idea of really selecting which pieces I want instead of just grabbing a bunch of “ok” items just because they are on sale. I will be looking forward to seeing how this works out for you. Thanks for sharing it!

I am fascinated with the capsule wardrobe idea. I definitely see myself doing it at some point. Before I do, I’m definitely going to pull out the few items I seem to reach for again and again, and WRITE DOWN the things about them that I like to hopefully influence future purchases and avoid impulse buying
I would DEFINITELY love to see your follow up posts featuring different outfit combinations and how you “shop your closet.” 🙂

Love this! We are living with most of our things in storage while our house is being renovated, so that was my push to try something similar. I have to say I love it. If you asked me what pieces I packed away I would have no idea, and it’s only been a month. Tempted to not even un-box them, just get rid of them when the time comes.

Really inspired by this idea! Since having my first child & being ‘forced’ into a small maternity wardrobe (in the interest of saving $$ and because it seemed silly to invest a lot in things to be worn so short-term), I’ve been gradually working towards this ‘less is more’ concept. When my regular wardrobe became available to me again, I found myself not excited about it & purged HALF. It felt great. The capsule concept will push me even further (making sure I’m EXCITED about every single piece is key), but since I’m due with #2 any day now, the timing isn’t quite right to start (will be in between maternity/regular sizing for a bit). Instead, I gave it a try with my toddler’s wardrobe when I was buying his fall/winter clothes. HAH! So, we’ll see how my ‘miniature’ capture wardrobe experiment goes.
Thanks for the inspiration, as always!

I really love this concept, but I’m not anticipating a mild winter, plus I have an outside the home job, so I’m not sure this would work for me at this stage of the game. I’m excited to see how it turns out for you.

Not sure if someone has suggested this already, but INTO MIND (http://into-mind.com) is also a great resource for stuff like this. It’s not so much a personal style blog like Un-Fancy but she posts lots of really in-depth posts on how to find your style and build a capsule wardrobe.

at first I thought I could never do this, then reading through, I realize I already do for work. I do childcare in my home so everything is casual & comfy – a few tshirts,1 tank, 2 dresses, 2 pair of capris & a pair of shorts for summer with some zip hoodies for early mornings. (I haven’t fully pulled out my fall/winter wardrobe yet, just a shirt, sweater or pair of jeans here & there) by this time of year I am fully sick of the same rotation though 🙂

I started my capsule wardrobe last month and I love it. I find that I’m ore creative, I waste less time in the morning trying to figure out what to wear, and I’m so much more comfortable in the clothing that I have. I even shared some tips on my own blog for how to shop online, in-store, and even how to get rid of a lot of clothing.

I have always loved this idea! It’s something I definitely want to do someday. My favorite pieces of clothing are worn until they are quite literally filled with holes. I hate parting with them! But I want a wardrobe as well. Something more than just my favorite shirts, of which I need to toss anyway!
    I love your choices!

Love this approach. I’ve never been much into shopping for fun or following fashion though I’ve always enjoyed exuding my style through what I wear. There’s something about turning 30 that made me finally own who I really am. And this minimalist approach of items your only really love is completely up my alley. Please keep us posted of your progress!

Love this approach. Now that I’m 30 myself, I’ve admitted I don’t like shopping for fun and I’m not into fashion. I am into expressing my style through clothes though. A minimalist approach of owning only what you love and not feeling the need to refresh your wardrobe constantly is totally up my alley. Please keep us posted of your progress!

Love this! I think most people do this anyway without realizing. I definitely wear the same clothes and shoes over and over again. Every once and a while I go through my closet and get rid of things I haven’t worn in the past year. How do you like your mocs? I’ve been thinking about getting some. I have some slippers from them and I love them.

A capsule wardrobe is what it’s called? I’ve been doing this my whole life. I call it ‘don’t have enough money to afford an extensive wardrobe so have a few good key pieces’ ;D hee hee! It’s a great idea though. Make your life simple! 🙂 There’s too much going on in life that we might miss because we’re stuck trying to figure out to wear. No one will really remember what you wore but they’ll remember their experiences with you.

I’ve been doing this for years — even working full time in Chicago’s Loop. I just don’t like shopping for clothes and I find it hard to find clothes I can afford that I like to wear. In summer I have one pair of black shoes and one pair of sandals. I keep a slightly dressier pair of flats under my desk at work in case I have meetings or something. In winter I have 2 pairs of shoes and one pair of boots. I love these boots but since they were $11 on clearance and this is year 4 I might have to replace them. Then I have 4-5 pairs of pants, several solid color tops, 3 neutral cardigans or casual jackets. They almost all go together.
When I got my job I started shopping for scarves (winter) and statement necklaces (summer) just to have a bit of interest.
Then you know what happened?!? I lost 60 lbs last year. Now we are going into winter and I have exactly ONE pair of jeans. And they are green. Everything else is too big on me.

Oh! Anyway I appreciate you giving it a name and telling me it was an actual thing. I just figured, I worked really hard to curate a small collection of items that looks like “me” and feels like “me”. All those daily fashion blogs made me feel inadequate about my clothes, like I’m supposed to look different every day. When I was in my 20s I was very influenced by magazine articles on stylish French women. They had a “uniform”, it was all simple and neutral, and they just added interesting scarves or accessories every season.

Love this. I would love to try something like this, but I have a feeling that my day job and the clothing I like to wear are just too different to pull it off. I definitely want to try to cut things down though. And the sad part is that I probably have so many clothes that I could make two mini capsule wardrobes. Maybe that would be fun to do – and would at least start cutting things down.

This isn’t a new concept The idea has been around for years There are books out about capsule wardrobes articles in magazines over the years It is a great idea when your on a budget living small The pictures of your clothes doesn’t show much variation in style & color This makes it harder Your clothes do look comfortable
