Whyidontcareaboutphotostorage

I get questions often about how I organize my digital photos. I always respond that I really don't.

Photostorage

This is what I do: I plug in my phone or my camera into my laptop. iPhoto pops up. I transfer all the photos there. I name the event something classy and super specific like like "mid-July random." I flag the photos that I need to use for a blog post. Ideally, every few months I back up to an external harddrive.

THAT IS IT.

It's saved. But totally disorganized. Totally cluttered with junk images. And I could not care less.

IMG_8746

I thought a lot about this. Why do I not care about keeping my digital files "clean and organized"? I have my business books kept down to every last penny. I am frantic about getting my blog archives set. My email inbox is empty more often than not. Perhaps most insane, I organized Ellerie's books by color!

But my digital photos? Eh. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Usephotos2

This is what I have realized: I take photos to share them. Share them currently, with family, friends and blogland. And share them in the future with myself, Paul and Ellerie.

Photos, to me, are a form of communication. "Look how rad this sunset looks!" "Remember how happy we were here?" "Check out what Ellerie learned to do today!" "OMG, look at this mini tomato I am absurdly proud of!" "Do you see how I executed step one?" "I am selling this item for $18."

Usephotos3

So the point of them is to use them. Share them online or via text. Show them to Paul when he gets home from work. Scroll through them myself in my only digital album that matters (iPhone). Print them and display them in our home. Get them into books and albums. Resize them for my blog or website. Those are my goals. The digital archives are just sort of a by-product of the actual purpose.

Because really… Tens of thousands of digital photos? I am so bored just thinking about those and I took all of them. Who is going to go through all of those? Hopefully no one! My parents have 4 big albums of 4×6 photos from our childhood (about 1200 photos) and I feel like they tell an awesome story.

I would so much rather spend my time making the memories and doing something with my images instead of archiving and cataloging them.

This was hugely freeing for me to realize. It encourages me to work on getting my memories off the computer and into real life. I hang love letters and photos my family in every room. I am in the process of covering our fridge in instagram magnets. I print books of the places we have lived and the things I love doing.

I don't organize my photos and it's okay.

Ha! So glad that there’s someone else out there who takes a whole bunch of photos but has absolutely no fancy storage solution for them!
I take hundreds of photos A WEEK between my phone and my “real” camera and when I plug my phone or memory card into the computer, I download everything into Dropbox automatically. When my Dropbox space runs out, I copy and paste everything in it into a folder on my computer titled — wait for — “Photos” and that’s it. I don’t rename them or group them by date or occasion or any other category, nor do I tag or label them, or rename them (they keep their fancy default file-name, like DSC_3265). Sometimes I feel like my approach is super lazy and “wrong”, but hey. It works for me, and for some reason I’m always able to find any photo I’m looking for pretty quickly, even if it was taken 3 years ago.

Totally agree about your approach — but obviously you don’t keep all the photos on your computer forever. Where do they actually live? This is the step that has gotten me stuck — I can’t decide what kind of storage to pay for and how to back up in addition to the storage.

My photos are organized by year > month > event. On the opposite end my scrapbook stuff is a big box where I put in supplies that I like in the hopes that someday I will do something with them. A couple of months ago I realized that my future kids will probably not go through my external hard drive and look at those and be like ‘Wow! Mom was so great at organizing!!’ so now the focus is to do something with the pics!

I keep trying and failing to organise my photographs too. It’d be fantastic if they were always organised but they’re not. I’ve kind of given up and now everything goes into a ‘blog post’ photo folder or a ‘2013’, ‘2014’ etc folder. It’s nice stumbling across old photos but really, I agree. Having nice photographs that you can share is even better!

YES! YES! YES! Photos are for use! I love this! And so timely as I spent some time trying to clean up my photos this weekend and aside from remembering a few fun things and making some photo connections to scrapbook I don’t feel the need to tag or rate every picture.

A back up harddrive, but the way iPhoto stores it is tragically bad. It’s in albums by how long it took me to back up (like maybe titled April-July) and there are always tons of repeats of old photos I haven’t deleted from my computer. 🙂

My photos aren’t organized either. My only upset is that I lost ALL of my Alaska photos (about 500) when my previous hard drive went corrupt. Otherwise, stuff is backed up on Facebook and Dropbox.

I go through fits of organizing photos b/c I love organizing. It’s one of those things I like to do while procrastinating on something I should be spending time on. 🙂
I would love a podcast / blog post on organizing financials for small business. This is what I do for my day job but when it comes to my business, I totally blank out. I’ve tried a few different ways but feel I’m either erring on the side of too much detail or not enough.

I am SO with you! The only one who looks at my photos is ME (unless I’m showing them to my husband), so I really don’t care if they’re jumbled up or only organized by date (and maybe a short tagline).
I have a planner and keep my inboxes clean and file our papers. I don’t need another thing to worry about.

Mine are a mess, too. And I always embraced that until I had to cull through years of photos for specific ones that my girls needed for school projects. That was daunting! Now I keep a file for each of them with a snapshot or two from milestone events, birthdays, etc. Now when they need one for school or whatever, I can find it. The rest are still a mess.

HOWEVER!!!! I DO have all of my photos digitally organized – including old photos that have been scanned in. (I am in the dark ages – no iPhone!) I am currently working on several family projects and also do some Project Life. SO – when I need to pull out a photo to use for one of the projects – I know exactly where to find it. My folders are organized by family and then by year – just like a big filing cabinet with folders. And I love it this way! AND – they are backed up on disk and hard drive and many are in print.
That being said – my system isn’t for everyone!
The most important thing is: MAKE LOTS OF GOOD MEMORIES – TAKE PICTURES – USE AND SAVE THE PICTURES IN THE WAY THAT SUITS YOUR PERSONAL NEEDS – there is no right or wrong way.

ok, I really had to weigh if I was going to comment because I’m completely OCD and the thought of disorganized photos (even digitally) makes my skin crawl, or if I wanted to give a bit of helpful advice…I’m not going to lie it’s a combination of both.
Anyway, as a mom with two kids (10 and 12) I will tell you that I didn’t organize my digital photos until about 5 years ago and it took me a LONG time. I’m talking hours and weeks of time, but the end result is a game changer. You see teachers have this way of assigning homework to parents – like those posters for “star of the week” or those “all about me” books or a personal favorite “a timeline of my life so far.”
My pictures that are printed are framed or in scrapbooks so when these “projects” come up I’d go to my computer and scroll through years worth of memories. Finally I got smart and organized in albums in iPhoto and they’re still pretty general like “summer 2014” or “swim team 2008” and then I upload those to shutterfly to be printed and stored and lastly I put them on an external drive. I do this maybe twice a year now and then I delete them from my computer.
Now that I have a system it’s super easy and fast, and I totally aced the last “all about me” book assignment!

I don’t obsess over organization of photos in iPhoto but I do utilize its Smart Album feature to auto organize everything for me by month. Otherwise when I start getting behind on Project Life I get lost as to what photos are from what time period. At the beginning of each year I take about 15 minutes to set up my Smart Albums for the year and then I’m done. I really recommend Smart Albums for those who want feel organize but not spend much time having to sort through stuff manually!

oh my goodness, me neither!!! when I upload to my computer they are stored by month, and like you I save to external source every so often. I thought about this, because like you I organize books, and clothing, and file folders, etc. I think it’s because in my mind I can still visualize the photo or the time of year or the even in which the photo was taken and since I am a visual person, if they were further titled or categorized, it might throw it all off for me.

Lovely post!! I struggle with this, too. In the end, I take so many that I order them by monthly folder. But I have to get better at printing and putting in frames/photo books/notes home as I go. Then I don’t have to track them down later. 😉

Whenever I upload in iPhoto I date the event with the year+month, for example “2014 07 home inlaws random”. The title is just as vague but at least I can see the year+month directly which gives me the feeling of being organized. It helps when creating yearly albums as well. Maybe an idea ? It takes no extra time and still allows for junk images a-plenty 🙂

I wish that I could feel better about not having organise photos since I’ve been putting the task off for a couple of years, but it does bother me a bit when they are all over the place. It makes it harder to find photos for projects as I want them, but my organisation is currently only yearly and monthly folders. I thinking I might try tagging in lightroom though, so they are even more easily searchable when I don’t remember the dates. I mostly just want to delete a heap of the crappy ones

I do the exact same thing you do! Whenever my Photos app is getting full on my iPhone, I decide it’s time to upload them all my computer and erase them from my phone. It makes my phone run way faster but my computer much slower. Are there any external hard drives you recommend for MacBook Pros? I’ve never used on before. I would love to be able to move them over to one and increase my laptop’s speed again!

I’ve actually been wondering how you keep track of all your photos so thank you for sharing this! My photos are just dumped in the computer… I was on organizing them until my second baby was born, we moved, and we went to Disneyworld all within a span of 3 months (not the smartest in hindsight). After that I gave up.
I have an external hard drive that I store photos on. But I’m so afraid of it crashing, I also back them up online. But my issue with this is, once they’re on the hard drive they’re more difficult to access and do things with. I usually don’t print/etc. right away but I would like to make books eventually.
I’ve lately been storing them on Shoebox – $5/month for unlimited storage, uploads automatically whenever you input new photos. But I’m thinking of switching to Shutterfly storage which is similarly priced, automatically deletes duplicates (huge!) and provides easy access for making photo books and prints.
I do, in any case, feel very comforted that your photos are not perfectly archived. 🙂

Is your only back-up to an external hard drive once every few months? Maybe I’m a little hysterical, but I back-up automatically though Time Machine every day to our own NAS. I have an extra external hard drive inside the house and one at my moms for extra security (in case of fire.) I would be sad if I lost my photos!

It seems like such a huge task, organizing photos. Mine are semi-organized with pretty specific folder names on my external hard drive, but that’s it. I try to “clean out” every few months to free space, but other than that, it is daunting. And it makes me anxious. Not worth the stress to organize 🙂

Ha, my digital photos are all over the show too! I use the ones I need and print and album regularly. I love to flick through a real life photo album with real life photos in there.
In the back of my mind I am convinced that somewhere down the line I won’t be able to access digital pics,so I like to have them on paper, so someone can see them in a hundred years time! I am not so sure anyone will be browsing my laptop in a hundred years…or will they!
Technology is so throwaway, I don’t want my pictures to go the same way.

    Hi Elise,
Since you mentioned your blog archives, I thought this might be a place to quickly mention one piece of site feedback you might find helpful. My best friend is getting ready to have her first baby in the next couple of weeks, and I mentioned your “Dear Ellerie” letters to her (she does not read your blog) as such amazing, honest writing to read through during your girl’s first year. She asked for a link and I had a hard time finding a clean way to get that info over to her.
I didn’t see anything strictly Dear Ellerie related in the archives (though forgive me if it’s in progress or I missed it), but the best thing I could come up with was to do a search for it on your site and send her the link to the search results page, which gives all the entries (plus some extra stuff) out of order.
Not a huge deal, of course, but I was just thinking it would be neat to have something similar to how Ali Edwards catalogs her December Daily books as she works on them – all the relevant links in order. Just my two cents anyway. Thanks & I love your blog mucho!
