Succulent

So this past weekend, my sister-in-law, Kristen, shared this tutorial from Needles + Leaves with me and I had to stop everything rightthatsecond and attempt it.

PROPOGATING1

I had a "leggy" succulent that was starting to outgrow itself so I followed the tutorial and carefully plucked off the leaves.

Propogating3

And layed them with the tiny top rosettes on VERY dry cactus soil.

Propogating2

And then I cut the stems off my original plant.

Propogating4

If all goes according to plan in a few weeks I should have tiny sprouts on my original plant stems, my rosettes should begin to grow roots and each leaf should develop it's own little florette at the base. And then, just like the tutorial recommends, I should be able to re-plant all of those (probably in the backyard).

Backyard1 Backyard2

I have experimented with this before and not had too much success – BUT this sort of thing happens in my backyard with my non-maintained jade plant all the time (see above!). I wonder if I'll be able to duplicate the magic inside? I'll keep you posted…

ps… potted succulent thank you favors, a DIY wooden plant stand and my jade plant succulent wreath.

This is so easy to do! I am propagating little succulents for my wedding favors (inspired by your thank yous!). My mom had a large pot of succulents on her porch last year and gave it to me to use and winter over. It gets too cold for them outside! I have noticed that they get leggy when they are not getting enough light.

Oh I’m excited to try this! My succulents always get too leggy and I wonder what I’m doing wrong. Hopefully you’ll have a succulent garden in no time!

Good luck! I did this a few months ago and all the leaves have little rosettes, but are very slow growing. I’ll blame the cold NH winter weather. Let’s hope now that spring is coming it will be a bit faster growing. It’s really fun to see them grow though. 🙂

This is a type/design comment: I keep reading “Part One” as “Partone”. Obv your design is up to you, I just thought I would let you know.

I’ve never known a thing about or even seen succulents except on your blog. But last week I went to the Macy’s Garden Show and they had this vignette that looked like a tin roof on a porch with a water element and the whole thing was covered in succulents! I tried taking some pics on my phone but not sure they looked very good. I did look closely at the plants and even touched them!

Did you know that where you are you can also grow plumeria? My mom has a few plants in her backyard. You can easily order cuttings on ebay or elsewhere online. I’m so insanely jealous of her!

I was inspired by her post on needles and leaves myself and immediately got to pulling those little stems off. Had a few that have been getting pretty leggy myself. I’m hoping for success!

I’ve just done this to my very leggy one! Fingers crossed it works out! Is there a reason you put it on cactus soil? I’d put mine on some paper towel, but might shift it if the leaves need nutrients from the soil…

I have found the most success with putting those jade leaves directly in water. I generally use a small clear glass or jar and then put em in a window. Within a few days-1 week I get sprouts without fail. Good Luck + I love your blog. Thanks for sharing.

WOW! I had no idea that you could do this with the succulents. I’m totally going to have to try it. Thank you so much for sharing it and best of luck in your venture to try it. I hope you’ll share with us the outcome! 🙂
