Favorites

I have a vivid memory from when I was seven years old. It was Christmas Day and my family had opened Santa presents and then driven to Tahoe to make up for the fact that we wouldn't be near extended family in Minnesota for the holidays. That evening, after dinner, we hung out at the hotel and played with our new gifts and my dad took what I described then and totally remember now as my "favorites" photo.

I was laying on the ground in my "favorite" hotel. I was wearing my "favorite" black leggings (technically I had three pairs and I just rotated them around and around) and my "favorite" tunic in my "favorite" color then – light blue. I was reading my "favorite" Baby-Sitter's Club book. I was eating my my "favorite" barbecue flavored potato chips. I had a can of soda nearby and I remember at the time thinking "Weeeelll, Dr. Pepper is really my "favorite" but for this photo I can pretend it was Sprite."

I totally remember being so content in that moment (as much as a seven year old can recognize contentment). Then I remember a few days later when we got the film back how fun it was to see and re-live that moment. There I was with all my favorite things – all at the same time. It was a good day.

I got a rush of deja vu on Tuesday night when I saw a photo Hannah Low took at the Your Story Retreat. I'm 29 years old and I finally have a new "favorites" photo. I'm wearing my "favorite" chambray top (I have three and I just rotate them around and around) and my "favorite" pants in my current "favorite" color – olive green. I am wrapped in my "favorite" over-sized blue scarf. My hair is in my "favorite" place where it looks so bad that it's starting to come around again to good. I've got on my very "favorite" headband. And I'm doing my absolute "favorite" thing, crafting for no reason just the sheer joy of making something from scratch and learning a new skill. Switch out that water glass at my feet for red wine (apparently I can never get the beverage selection right) and boom – favorites all around.

#photosalwayswin.

because someone will ask : chambray top, similar pants, similar scarf, headband.

You’ve just set me off on memories of the Babysitter’s Clube books – I’d completely forgotten how much I loved those!

This reminds me of when I was about nine and I had one of those journals with prompts to fill in about yourself. I remember exactly what I was going to put as my favorite outfit – purple leggings and a purple sweater with ice skates on it. (In true 90s fashion.) But I was a perfectionist and didn’t want to mess up the journal, so I kept putting off writing it down until I could get it exactly right. It, of course, didn’t occur to me that my favorites would change and it was worth capturing what they were at the time. Now, of course, I wish I’d gone ahead and written more of that stuff down, and I see the value of recording the sometimes-mundane “favorites” we think will never change but often do.
You have hit it out of the park with every post this week, by the way. Your writing is so consistently thoughtful and thought-provoking. 🙂

Oh my goodness!! I totally had the purple leggings and purple sweat shirt – add in purple socks and purple keds. And then the whole outfit all over again in hot pink. So there was lots of mixing and matching going on. But sub out those ice skates for roller blades. 🙂

Hooray symmetry! How fun is that? [Still really upset that my mom donated all of my Babysitters Club books…]

Would love to see the picture of when you were 7! What size in the chambray top do you wear? I am petite like you and just wondering if you wear petite sizes or regular? Thanks.

What a wonderful photo! Just think how much you’ll love seeing this in 20 years. 🙂 Sidenote, I used to love babysitters club, too! Logan was my fave boy name FOREVER because of Maryanne’s boyfriend, lol!

Oh, that is too funny. This was also one of several sweatshirt-legging pairs that I had in rotation. I don’t think I even wore jeans until well into middle school… leggings were the way to go. 🙂

You’re totally right! I can distinctly remember feeling so “grown” up when I told my mom, “I think I want to wear jeans now.” Haha!

My favorite photo from my younger years shows me at our big, old, upright piano. Our dog is sitting on the bench with me. I have a composition notebook near by as well because I was never without it. (I went through a major Harriet the Spy phase. No shame!) My new photo would probably have me near a musical instrument of some sort with a very large cup of coffee and my favorite pair of boots. Oh, and of douse our cat, Geoff! Not much has changed.
Also, I wanted to say….I’ve listened to all of your podcasts so far and I LOVE THEM! I love hearing about small business and what makes people tick. Keep them coming! I will be an avid listener for sure!

I love this post so much! I totally understand the hair comment “where it looks so bad that it’s starting to come around again to good”. I do love your pants so much and have started searching for some similar – can you share where yours are from?
On another note, I just love your blog – I am expecting a baby girl this June so I love seeing your girl on here. She is such a doll and is getting so big! I know it will go by so fast so I love your Dear Ellerie posts and it makes me want to do something similar once my baby girl is here. 🙂
