Wholejan

My word for this year is WHOLE. It feels so much more abstract than my past words. Whole what? Whole personal life? Whole business life? The "Whole-y" Grail a.k.a the impossible "balance" between the two? Whole body? Whole grains? Whole house decorated?

Yes, please. All of the above. I am not sure where this word is headed, but in January I implemented two new habits (okay three if you count the mornings project) in an attempt to bring in more WHOLE (or maybe a better term is complete) living.

The first habit is public and it is my weekend links series.

I decided to make this part of my blogging routine because while I cannot keep the negativity off the Internet, I can focus on the positive stuff. It's easy to be anonymous and attack or nit-pick existing content. It's hard to be authentic and generate new content. I'm celebrating the hard.

I've learned through years of reading blogs and writing my own that competition online is more imagined than real. There is not a limit to the amount of great content that can be shared with the Internet. In fact, there is always plenty of room for thoughtful, honest and unique content. The "better" one blog does, the better the whole community does. This past month I have been actively seeking out more good stuff and, perhaps surprisingly, it's making me feel less competitive.

The second habit is personal and pretty much the opposite.

I am working on not taking my iPad or iPhone to bed. I've realized that reading blogs, looking at Instagram or scrolling Pinterest before I go to sleep makes my mind whirl. And not in the good way. There is a noticeable difference in how long it takes me to fall asleep on the nights that I read a book (on paper not my kindle app) and the nights that I read online content.

After the constant online refresh and continuous waterfall of all so many images and ideas, I find myself totally hyped up and tend to toss and turn. After paging through an actual book, I feel calmer and am generally asleep within minutes after I put it down. Obviously, good, restful sleep is a huge priority and this habit switch (which has been embarassingly hard to break!) is for the best. What I really need is an alarm clock that is not an app on my phone. Then I'll be able to keep the devices out of my bedroom completely.

So that's my progress on WHOLE so far and my attempt to make this abstract concept a little more literal. I am celebrating the content generators by day and eliminating the noise at night.

So refreshing to hear you struggle with competitiveness too. A little flaw we are all guilty of from time to time. For me, you’re hands down my favourite blogger and consistently produce wonderful, unique content.
In sunny Australia, your posts go live at 11pm each night and it is always the last thing I read everyday- and have for the last couple of years. I might trial your ‘no computer before bed’ idea – it’ll mean a disruption to my usual schedule. I think I’ll give it a go for a week. I’ll report back 🙂 Have a great day

i have found this exact same thing to be true. and besides the crazy brain that comes from seeing so many beautiful images and projects, i think there’s also something with the light and the screens on these devices.
thanks for sharing your word and continuing to inspire. 🙂

great post today. I’m more of a stalker of your blog 😉 rather than a comment-er. But, it’s funny because your blog post is eerily similar to one i’m crafting for my own blog. I’m challenging myself to not take the electronics to bed for February. I read ‘Hands Free Mama’ to bring my OLW ‘present’ to the forefront this month. Even though I’m not a mother there are def things in my life that I am missing out on because I’m seemingly addicted to technology! It was nice to hear about your progress.
Keep up the awesome posts here on your blog. It’s one of my favourite places to visit. I admire your fresh content every day and the effort you’re putting forth to mix motherhood with the everyday life as a blogger. I think you’re fab!

Hi Elise! You hit on some great points today… let’s seek the POSITIVE…there is far far too much negative stuff in our faces everyday anyway. I have found that turning off the “push” notifications on my phone (so that little red circle isn’t tempting me to check my email and sending me down the rabbit hole for 15 minutes) has helped immensely. I don’t want to turn my phone off so this is the next best thing.
    also
I was just reading an article that you should limit screen time for kids AND no screens for 1+ hour before they go to bed, it over stimulates the brain. i don’t see why this doesn’t apply to grown-ups too. I do watch a little tv w hubs before we turn in (big bang theory re-runs or ‘parenthood’ catching up) but then we turn the tv off, go to our screen free bedroom and read (me) or do net crossword puzzle (hubs) until lights out. much much better !!
    and
My laptop sits on the corner of my worktable and if I’m not listening to streaming content or watching a video while I work…I now turn it off. too much temptation = too little getting done… Now I’m signing off! have a great day!

Re the gadgets in bed, have you read Hands Free Mama by Rachel Macy Stafford? She talks about that very thing, alongside lots of other good stuff. The general premise is to be more present and connected in your everyday life, with your spouse, with your children, etc.
Says she who it typing this into the blogosphere via her PC, having just read your post online! Ho, hum!

Oh man… I have been struggling with this lately too.
I’m trying to establish (and adhere to!) new boundaries for technology.
    It’s a process.
I’m also on the hunt for an alarm clock but can’t seem to find anything that I love… if you come across something fabulous I hope you’ll share it here.
    thanks so much!!

Hooray for celebrating the positive! Competition is at an all time high as I enter my final semester of thesis – thanks for the reminder to focus on the good and lift each other up rather than letting comparison take an unhealthy hold on me 🙂 … but that being said, you are definitely my favorite blogger 😉

Good morning wonderful blogger, Elise! I love your blog and i especially enjoy the mornings when I can sit for a few minutes, drinking my tea, and reading your blog. Keep up the positive thoughts because you have so many more in your fan club than you realize! Happy day to you!
And, P.S. Try searching “sleep maintenance” for tips to fall asleep better without technology. It has been something I continually try to improve. It’s sooo not easy so good for you in recognizing that keeping the ipad and phone out of your bed is already helping.

Yes to the needing an actual alarm clock! I’ve been telling my boyfriend and friends that I want one/need one for about a month now. They don’t seem to understand why, but I really think it will help me sleep better and have more relaxed/productive mornings. Right now, my iPhone is the last thing I look at at night and the first thing I look at in the morning. Not good!

I feel the same way about not using devices in bed before I sleep. I’ve been testing that theory this week and I find the nights where I just read a book, I fall asleep so much more easily.
Another thing I have been loving is my fitbit force armband. Not only does it track all sorts of fun things like active minutes, distance walked during the day, sleep, etc but it also has a silent, vibrating alarm. I am loving it!

I’m totally with you regarding looking at internet (pinterest, instagram or whatever). Since my childhood I read books before sleeping. Some Times ago, I began to have a look at the computer before going to bed (I was always saying “oh! Just 5 minutes and I switch off… And obviously this lasted one hour or more…). Then I was excited, thinking about everything I just saw on the screen and it took me ages to fall asleep. I have since come back to my old (and better) habits and read some pages of a good book each and every night. Apart from having the pleasure to read good things, my sleep is really better !

I love the idea of going to bed without any devices. Maybe I will implement that in February. The world isn’t going to end if my phone isn’t 1/2 an inch from my ear all night. I won’t stop sleeping with the TV on, but I can definitely be fine without my phone right next to me. Having a regular alarm clock that’s not attached to the phone is a good thhing.

I’m with you on not reading online content before going to bed. Too many things to think about that it is impossible to go to sleep. I’ll have to try reading a real book too, see if that makes a difference. I’ve been reading ebooks. Good luck with exploring your OLW, and thanks for the great posts!

Eek! I am so guilty of doing this too. I try to blame my smartphone and that sometimes it’s my only time to look at such things, but I know it’s a bad habit. Reading a book before bed is MUCH BETTER.

Love this, E. I went to a writing/blogging conference in October and one of the themes that came up in almost every session I attended was the “myth of scarcity” and the “truth of abundance”. That resonated with me SO much, and has really impacted the way I blog in a good way (I think). Happy Thursday, friend!

Go Elise! Not looking at my phone before bed was one of my biggest changes this month too and it has made a world of difference. HUGE actually. I’ve already read a book (and I don’t think I even managed to read a full one last year). It feels awesome.

I’ve never gotten into the habit of bringing my phone or laptop into my bedroom. I plug everything in to charge in the kitchen and then off to bed I go. I have a friend that was complaining about getting texts in the middle of the night that woke her up. When I suggested that she not have her phone on her nightstand I thought she was going to have a panic attack! If you have an iPhone I think there’s a way to have the alarm sound but all other notifications silent . . . sorry I can’t tell you how to do it. Good luck – new habits are hard but you can do it!

These are great habits — it’s incredible how much of a difference small tweaks like yours can make over the long run. Last year I worked really hard to make flossing every night a habit (sexy, right?) and now it’s second nature to me. This year I’m trying to do the same with dry brushing.
Regarding reading books v. technology before bed, there are some pretty interesting studies out about the effects of synthetic light (or “blue light”) on our brain activity. I don’t have any links handy but it’s worth a Google search. Additionally, installing the app f.lux on your devices syncs with your local sun cycle to brighten or dim the screen lights to theoretically keep your brain in line with your body’s circadian rhythm. Fascinating!

Another fantastic post Elise … you’re just getting better & better. Luckily I have no devices other than my big beautiful office iMac – I know “crazy” I must be the only person I know who doesn’t even have a cell phone. But … that doesn’t stop me from wasting an inordinate amount of time in my day to day creative life/business – way too much flitting here and there and everywhere. I need to unplug from the internet. I notice you aren’t on Facebook, something I felt I almost had to do as another potential way of marketing myself. Obviously you’re a shining example of doing super well without that particular platform, would love your thoughts on why you did choose to opt out.
I too am a library junkie & I too have a busy, racing mind full of new ideas and plans. Fiction at bedtime is my relaxation drug of choice. Travelling to someone else’s world let’s me let go of my own. Currently reading Cartwheel and am nearly finished & loving it – a really beautifully written page turner.

Scientific studies have proven that the special “blue” light that comes off screens (TV, hpone, tablet) stimulate brain activity (designed to keep you awake) and therefore, disrupt sleep patterns. They recommend NO SCREENS for at least an hour before sleep.
    Anyway, my two cents.

I got a real alarm clock for Christmas for this very reason. It actually connects by Bluetooth to my iphone which I keep outside the bedroom, but that way I can wake up to music rather than the alarm. It’s a much more pleasant way to stop and start the day.
